Body color strakes
 

Finally got around to installing my black strakes on my 8. I think they look great against the car. Here are a few pictures:

doestn anyone get that there is a huge demand for strakes, i mean there should be more options on them, id like to see some chrome ones, or maybe carbon fiber.

I want black ones on my Yellow:( I cannot find them. I keep looking. Looked at the thread about making them, not me. I just want want to buy a pair. Anyone ?

I was one of the lucky one's who responded quickly to get a "test" set. The strakes were a sorta creme color when I got them (as they were made from ABS plastic). I had them painted up to my color. Love the look myself :)

Ok people. First I am going to give you fog light strakes. I am enclosing a pic I just took this evening of the prototypes that I have had created. I will be putting them on in few minutes and will take pictures and post them. These are just a beginning.

I plan to make a mold and resin cast these and finish them the same way as the prototypes. Next, while I am making a cast of the front strakes, I am going to make a cast of my strakes.

I have already thought this process out and am going to offer them up as did antichristpm except I plan on following through with this process and making them available. In addition, I am wanting to design the elusive third strake that was discussed in the first thread about these.

Baby (my RX-8) needs a new pair of shoes. :D In addition, a new MS style wing, a Forced air Intake when they become available and a whole lot of other mods as things develop. Here are pics of the finished prototype fog light strakes

I just had my strakes painted titanium to match the car. Haven't had a chance to install them yet, I'll post some pics when I do.

I cast the first mold of one of my side strakes tonight to see if the material I used will work. If by tomorrow night the mold looks good, I will be making the other three. If this goes well and as planned, I will be casting my first test set of side strakes this weekend.

I have ordered some other mold making material and resin for the main production of both side and front strakes. If this goes well and I become a vendor, I may have to have some of the resin cast productions sent to a mold making factory and have permanent molds made. For now, I am going to use a silicone product to make the mold which should last for a 100 molds, so they say. This has to be poured over the object in a small box that I fabricated out of acrylic plastic. Once cured, in about 24 hours time, I can remove the mold from the box and, with luck, peel out my strake. Silicone will not stick to plastic or metal, it will only stick to glass and porous substances.

By design, the only way to make this work, I will have to sink the fastener bolt in the resin after it is cooled. I plan to use a jig to hold the bolt at the right angle and depth in order to do this properly.

So, within a couple of weeks, if all goes well, I may be able to offer a few of these on here to some of you.

I'll also look into a third strake. This will have to be designed a bit differently than the first two. It's an angle thing. Luckily, I was able to find one of my unique tools that I kept tucked away, and that I cannot find at the local Lowes (Home Depot or whatever they are called in your area). This tool looks like a comb with many teeth. The teeth are all together and it is made out of metal. As you push this up against a compound angle, the teeth move independently from each other and it forms the angle you are needing to duplicate. So, the angle of the third will not be hard to do, at least in theory. Also, I may want to space them apart a bit as I did a few months back when I was posting about this in the original strakes thread.

I have seen somewhere that tool you were talking about, it should work. Well, I am glad that you are persuing a production of side strakes and those neat fog lights strakes. Just one question, have you consider making a version of those strakes for the poeople who does not have fog lights? just a thought.... As for me I am still debating in whether or not making a third strake. In some way it looks neat, but in other way it looks kind of busy for me. Maybe If I increase the spacing between the upper and the lower strakes might look good . Anyway, GOOD JOB! :D

Yes, that will have to come a bit later after getting the first ones out because for me to do that, I will have to take off the fog lights for fitting and that requires removal of the front nose.

Speaking of side strakes...yes, I can uderstand that maybe it would but, as far as your moving your strakes since you made yours you have the ability to change angles if needed.

I am also thinking about another mod that deals with the strakes and side grills as an integrated part and design. Not being partial to plastic grills, I am envisioning a different design to the entire side grill. I'll provide something later that will detail this further. :D

Taking a few minutes to mock this up in photoshop. I was thinking about reorienting the grill facing the rear side of the wheel well and having the oposite side slope in a small amount. I borrowed this pic from Gyro and did the modication I was thinking about on his closeup. When I have time later, I will try to do a better mock up of what I was thinking. :D

The tool you're looking for is called a profiler. You can get in in plastic and metal.

I happen to have 2 in the office, as an architect you need this once in a while to copy millwork details or curves.

last week I seen 3 of these in my Home Depot in MN. They were in the power tool section next to the screwdrivers and socket wrenches. If they don't have it try a woodworkers stores they will have it for sure.

And when you get your mock-ups and prototypes done...I'd probably take a set of the fog strakes and triple strakes. I'd pull out the old air brush or auto paint sprayer and paint them winning blue or black.

Have you given any thought to adding metal flakes and/or color to your resin castings? If you go to a woodworking store, some have pre-colored resin set ups and colored dyes. There are some woodworkers who use this for inlays and detailing. Just something to think about.

black and silver are the only color that could pull it off i mean yellow with yellow strakes would be GAY

Yellow with black will look sharp IMO. I would never put yellow strakes on my yellow.

Wow very impressed. But first i need my car. by the way what about black on a winning blue Me likey good luck with your experiment and dont forget to add a third strake its different dimensions due to placement.
