Anyone have the 3M window tint?

Considering 3M (non-metallic), but it's more expensive than other standard tints. How's your 8 look with it?

yeah, I've got the 3M tinting. I love it. I don't know what I had in my last car (it was tinted when I got it). I don't notice a difference, but I'm told it's worth the expense. It's supposed to be scratch resistant, so if there are scratches or bubbles/peeling develop you should get it replaced for free.

On the subject of the front windshield, you should check with the DMV/DOL if it's allowed in your area. I think someone posted the window tint guide for the states somewhere in forum, try a search for it.

I know that I've seen people get a light tint on the windshield, and then get the dark stip tint up top. This way the cop will see the difference between the strip and the windshield and won't think it's tinted all the way. I'm not saying you should do this, just that I've heard about it.

It's hard to tell from the pics, but it is much darker inside with the tinting. I'm also at 35% all around due to washington state specs. Here's a pic of my 8 w/ 3M, oh I also had a temporary "hot girl mod", it's has since been removed

Yep, I've had mine for over a year and half now, and have had it on other cars before my '8. Good stuff, and well worth the expense. Click on the pic of my car in my sig for pics of the car/tint - it's 3M 30% tint. Hope this helps.

Regarding scratches / scuffs: how sensitive is this 3M tint? I'd like to get my windows tinted and would much rather pay more for the material if it would withstand better against getting scratches.
How careful would i have to be when getting the car washed and they clean the windows from the inside? I'm talking about just regular use, cleaning and stuff with normal care, not some abuse. Would the 3M not get scuffed?
Thanks.

Only if they clean it with something abrasive. I have yet to have any scuff marks on my 3M tinted cars.

As I recall, I paid about $200 to get my '8 tinted. My previous car (99 Maxima) cost $220 at the same shop.

I've got the 3M tint and its awesome. Paid $250 for 35% on all windows except the front windshield. It definitely adds a great look to the 8, its like its supposed to look in my opinion.

I've been tinting for 18 years and wouldn't put 3M on my worst enemy's POS BMW...3M is great if you're into really nice post-it notes. Stick with a company that specializes in window film...Solargard, LLumar, Suntek, Madico. Just because 3m's a household name, doesn't make it good.

Warranty would not cover that. Plus, there is no manufacturer that will warranty any illegal tint job. And yes, 2 fronts can just be done. It's done everyday on trucks that come with a factory tinting on the rears. Why would you have illegal tint installed if you knew you were going to have to go through inspection?

They all make non-metallic color-stable films with a lifetime warranty. I use Solargard. Solargard has a line of film called NR(non-reflective)True Grey...colorstable, lifetime warranty, 1 year no-fault warranty. But I can also honestly say in all my years of tinting i've had 1 complaint of radio reception and no complaints with navigation. And 90% of the tint I install is metallized. But the NRTrue Grey is probably the best looking film we have.

For the record I wasn't suggesting that you SHOULD do an illegal front tint. But that it has been done.

Question Tint or not?

I've been thinking about tinting the window on my black 8. I just got it about a month ago, so I haven't had it in any heat yet. How much does tinting the windows help with the heat and sun in the summer. Does it keep it much cooler or is it primarily for looks? I'm a bit worried with the black paint and black and red leather seats!!!

Thanks!
