Most common were grey and red oxide. Black was also available.
It's a little more difficult keeping it clean.
The primer will actually develop a bit of a gloss over time.
If flat black had some stealth value to it I would be interested.

Today flat black should be two-stage with matting agent in the clear. Depending on how much is put in the clear the finish will be just a little dull to egg shell. You definitely don't want to just use primer, that won't prevent rust underneath. It won't take too long for the sun to break down primer or E-coat for that matter.
