It's not for everyone that is sure and it doesn't hold up as well. I would be worried about it staining.

Or you could go crazy.

THe flat black rx8 from the first pic looks nasty. nasty = good. The second stealth looking 8 looks plain stupid. I'd definately do it for $700 just to have one of the most unique 8's on the road. I would do it in a heartbeat for $700 given my friend was going to guarantee the paint will look as good as that in the first pic posted. Do it and post the pics!!!!

This guy's unique, but in this case, nasty ≠ good. My jury's out on flat black. It could be nasty or ... nasty.

its something I've been thinking about for months!
and well since my car is a used one the brilliant black wasn't looking so sharp.

Personally I wouldnt go with purple wheels. Go with black powder coat oem or brushed aluminum aftermarket. Post pics of finished product.

good luck man
hopefully he does a good job

please, for the sake of your paint job, DONT take shortcuts and just mask everything. Luckily, your car is black, so I'm guessing he won't be doing jambs.

at the very least:
remove front/rear bumpers, paint separately
remove headlights, tail lights
remove mirrors, paint outer cover separately
remove and paint door handles separately
remove belt moulding
remove quarter panel glass
remove roof drip moulding and paint separately
remove emblems

make sure you buy both quarter panel stone guards (the clear film on your quarter panel)

make sure the room is ABSOLUTELY dust free. you can't really fix a flat/satin paint job with wetsanding.

that would be my problem right there.
any little scratch or something wrong with the clearcoat. short of repainting the whole panel you're kind of stuck.

I've seen a completely flat black RX-8 (stock body, I think) in NYC. It really does stand out. Throw up some pics when you finish yours!

Man..... i always wondered what a group of people kicking one guy in the ***** over and over would look like...thanks for showing me rx8club....

My suggestion..... go for it and if it doesnt look right , be prepared to take it somewhere that it can be done right.... next time wear a cup when asking for advice on here.....apparently it can de dangerous.....for all these guys know your friend is chip foose....besides...since when is $700 chump change....

p.s. for those that were flaming....i know...he asked for your opinion....but it wasnt about whether or not his friend should do it , but whether you think flat black would look good...and it does...

If you want to kill what little resale value you your car may have, then by all means paint it black.

We all would love to see it, but rarely does it ever come out well.

You asked for people's opinions and you get it.

It would be an exotic look, but I automatically think of road debris (bugs, rocks, homeless people) dinging the front bumper and hood in the matter of weeks

This may be a dumb question but i really dont know -- what kind of maintenance would u do on a paint job like that? In other words, could you wax that at all or no?
