This was the same thing people told me about buying a yellow car, "it's too loud, you'll get tired of it". Here it is almost 8 years later and I never get tired of it, it's still my favorite color for this car. Just goes to show you never really know until you see something in person, I happen to love that paintjob as it's so far out of the norm of everything I see done, of course it's "busy", that's the whole point. I think stuff like that has its place just like plain jane solid color cars etc., at least it's not vinyl with a roll call on it like all the other 50 quintillion imports I see at shows. My only beef with that car is the horrendous wheel choice, but knowing those guys and how often they like to powdercoat them I can't really fault them for it.

We both have our opinion on how it looks. The OP wanted feedback so I offered up what I thought.

Airbrush art anyone?

Canary has a nice car but that doesn't mean someone else can't prefer to drive a black car to Baskin & Robins so he can order a single scoop of vanilla.

hmmmmm ?????? so what does a european and a japanese dragon have to do with anything mentioned above???

It's not finished yet and both dragons are included in Japanese folklore according to my research.

The Hai-Riyo are also known as Tobi Tatsu and Schachi Hoko. These hail from the Land of the Rising Sun, Japan. They are "Dragon-Birds". They have the claws and wings of the bird as well as a bird's body, but retain the other draconic qualities. Much like the Chinese Ying-Lung, the Japanese viewed these as the most evolved of all dragons.

Sui-Riu is the Japanese Dragon King. The Dragon King was in charge of all the rain, and he was sometimes known as "the rain dragon."

My 8 05-19-2011 04:09 PM

Thank you Reverend, I don't know how to do that!

Rotr8 05-19-2011 05:23 PM

Again still don't see the dedication part, the part where you talk about the rotary, japanese innovation and engineering and Mazdas dedication to ensure the longevity of the rotary, thats what people were getting excited about not random japanese folklore... you gonna cram all that into the corner I guess,,,

RX8inSTL 05-19-2011 08:50 PM

Yea, Im gonna have to agree with Rotr8 I dont really see any of the stuff you first talked about, and while the dragons are cool they just arent really anything unique, I remeber seeing another car on here with a dragon.

I think the original idea kinda dissapeared which is unfortunate, unless there is a lot of changes to come.

My 8 05-20-2011 06:32 AM

Ya, I'll cram all of that stuff you were all so excited about in a corner for you right away..

Like I said it is not finished yet, there will be another picture up with the progress soon, perhaps then it won't look so random.

Perhaps if I had the artist put suicide doors on the dragons more people would get the art..

I specifically chose these dragons for my graphic because..

Sui Riu (the smaller dragon) is regarded as a respected and powerful dragon even though his physical size in folklore is no larger than a domestic cat. He is known as the king dragon as well as the rain dragon, he is considered imperial and controls the weather. He is causing the lightning storm on my hood, his claw extended is the hint that he is responsible for the rain and the dark cloud shaped like Japan that is over his head.

Hai Riyo is a symbol of change and innovation, he is considered the most evolved of all dragons and because he cannot venture far from his point of origin without shortening his life he develops a strong loyalty to those that he befriends, he serves man the way a dog or a horse would, however he is highly intelligent and communicates telepathically with those who he might serve.

Having the 2 dragons linked at the tails shows that they are in unity. The intention was to convey them together harmonious and perhaps even celebrating.

The logo centered inside the triangular section of the hood nearest the windshield is the centerpeice. Unfurtunately, I couldn't seem to get a decent picture that shows the engine behind the logo well because it fades above the flames but it actually can be seen all the way up to where the hood stops at the windshield, it's just difficult to capture on a picture.

Overall I am quite satisfied with what Phil did with this project. I was very involved in the concept and sometimes overbearing while Phil was very patient, trying very hard to get the ideas I would convey to him to the point of illustration.

I was a couple of months with ideas for this project rolling around in my head and when I contact phil about 3 or 4 weeks ago I thought I was pretty clear about what I wanted. In the planning stages with Phil, I quickly realized that the idea was still evolving and in the end we really ended up puttting together a graphic that I can no longer take all of the credit for.

I will do more painting over the winter months with Phil to extend this graphic onto the fenders and back to the doors. It will be a minor improvement with the intention of enhancing what is already there, not competing with it.

ZumnRx8 05-23-2011 09:08 AM

Interesting^

ZumnRx8 05-23-2011 09:13 AM

Whoa wait, preferred it without the rotor in the middle. Fuck it. Just a hood , not like the other guy routh the Yugi-oh dragon across his car.

pdxhak 05-23-2011 09:19 AM

I'm not feeling it but then again that is a personal thing. Seems the hood should have been a final touch to your mods. Looks out of place on a stock car.

My 8 05-23-2011 11:33 PM

Stock? Not quite, my list of mods is extensive, check my other thread..

I also have clear corners with blue background and polished aluminum strakes that I haven't had a chance to get on yet to match the front and rear polished aluminum accents.

Something else that is somewhat unique are the diamond finish aluminum floor mats I custom ordered a while back, they have a black hard surface and cutouts of the Mazda logo with blue background.

The only significant thing left as far as appearance is the wheels as I have no intention of doing anything with body kits..

Not everyone is going to feel it pdx but I have had some real positive feedback from people in the real world

lta_ds_fs7 05-24-2011 07:41 AM

I think it's very unique...I'm sure it took a lot of guts to hand your hood over and let somebody go to work with it, knowing there's a possibility that they could create a disaster...I was expected something slightly different, but it still looks nice...Good work.

MazDangerous86 05-30-2011 08:54 AM

I think it looks pretty awesome. Unique, better then decals, doesn't look tacky.
Great Job.
