Airbrush Art
I got this crazy idea in my head and couldn't shake it off..
Since I over payed taxes by a considerable sum in 2010 I consider my refund to be kind of like found money so I am putting about a third of my refund into lining the pockets of a poor starving local artist. He is a young and creative gent who has been gracious enough to give me an extended consultation to get everything in my graphic down to the last detail ironed out.
Now that I am satisfied with what we have come up with together I am taking a leap of faith and leaving it (for the most part) in his hands by giving him a small deposit and the green light to go ahead and paint.
It is a hood graphic that I am having done..
I dropped by his shop on Saturday afternoon to remove the hood and will leave it with him for 5 days or so. When I get the hood back my Wankel Wagon will be like no other, displaying original art by a local artist who is overflowing with enthusiasm for the project.
My concept for the art was multi tiered..
First, I wanted to pay tribute to the uniqueness of the rotary design. Second, I wanted to applaud Japanese engineering for their contribution, showing the world a superb example of innovation in design and on the same note admiring their perseverance in keeping the rotary alive all these years for the niche market that is well represented on this cool forum. Third, I felt a strong inclination to extend visually into the cultural uniqueness of Japan by including a reasonably accurate and yet artistic depiction of something that is integral to their history.
There is more to the graphic than what I wrote above, some is subtle and some is obvious. I am excited to see the outcome of what I have dreamed up and hope to get some feedback from the members here when I post my pics next week. I am sure the response will be mixed, I just hope to receive some honest feedback. If there are other members here who have artwork displayed on their rotary I would be interested in seeing it posted here as well..

Every RX 8 that is well taken care of is a show car in my opinion, my show car gets driven everyday throughout the summer and in the winter she waits in the garage for the next summer when she will be shown on the streets all over again. I will continue to take good care of her but she is my ride and will earn her keep for many years to come (fingers crossed).

My 8 is an '04 and has over 70 000 KM (that's 45 000 miles) on it and the hood hasn't got a scratch, perhaps it depends on where one is driving, the roads around here are pretty good.

meh, airbrush is okay I guess, if I was going to do something graphic wise I'd have mine hand painted by the same lady who painted my interior. She did this entire car (completely by hand) and it is completely mind blowing...and the guy drives it all the time. Pictures don't do this thing justice, it's insane how much detail is captured in it, you can stare for hours on end and still find stuff you didn't see before lol I know it's not everyone's taste, but it's defintely a break from the airbrush norm.

That is definitely interesting Canary, thanks for the contribution.
You are right, art is like ice cream; everyone has their favorite flavor and the odd person doesn't even like it.

I shot that car at the 512 project. It's crazy looking.

It looks like that artist won't be starving for a while..
It is very nice, it must have many hours invested with that kind of detail. Any idea on the cost of such a thing?

It took her over 4 months to do it, and then they ruined it a few times by sanding through it so she's had to repair it a few times too. She was supposed to do a display board for my car last year to match the rest of her work she did on mine but we could never seem to get connected (she keeps pretty busy) (doh!) Her name is Cindy but she goes by "crash", that scooby would probably cost upwards of 10k or more, but knowing her she probably didn't charge anywhere near that, she gave me an amazing "buddy" price on my interior since we were going to Sema with it etc., probably did the same for the guy who owns the scoob. she's an amazing artist and a heckuva nice lady, really enjoyed working with her on my car.

Meet Sui Riu (small dragon on the right) and Hai Riyo (large dragon on the left).
The project is underway and there is more artwork to come in the next couple of days. Just a tease of the big picture but I am definitely pleased with what I am seeing on my hood so far..
