Preacher 04-11-2004 02:38 PM

I got most of my bulbs here:
http://autolumination.com/7443_7440.htm
including the 7443 red 9-LEDs,of which I accidentally bought a second set of,and which Omi should have in and installed by Friday ;)

Omicron 04-11-2004 03:50 PM

At least, I hope to get 'em in that quick. :D

D MENAC 7 04-11-2004 10:48 PM

I have a similar install from the same supplier as you do Preacher. Only difference is, I got amber LED side corners since red are not legal here. I love the front super white 194 LED running lights, pics just cannot do it justice. They are so nice and bright with just a litttle blue hue that they are unique looking when viewed at night.

If I have one complaint about the brake/tail light LEDs vs. the incadescents, they are just a bit darker and more directional but, then again, so are the silvered bulbs that I replaced all of the rear lamps and front turn signals with too. At night, they are excellent, during high sun light, they can be hard to see. However, one light I left incadescent is the 3rd brake lamp, everyone sees that one light up since it's higher than the other two.

rx-81688 04-12-2004 02:45 AM

hey those lights goods great, but how can u change the one that is at the front by the head lights, do u have to take the whole head light unite out? thanks

Preacher 04-12-2004 06:41 AM

Parking lights are 194s-I got 6-LED SuperWhites for mine :D

The one on the driver's side can be reached from under the hood without removeing anything. The one on the passenger side can be reached after you take the cover off of the ECU which sets in the way. Both are a tight squeeze.

What brand are they?

D MENAC 7 04-12-2004 11:41 AM

they came from here http://autolumination.com

They do not come packaged as if in a store. My guess is they buy them by the bulk and sell them by the order. The "stealth" style lamps are Chrome Silver Vision by Sylvania. I've had both for well over a month, all that I prurchased from them came in in good shape and working just fine. The best way to describe this product is as if it were an OEM product.

Preacher 04-12-2004 11:43 AM

Autoillumination's bulbs are definately bought in bulk.
I have their 9-LED 7440s in my brake/tails,and they look so awesome that I just ordered 6-LED SuperWhites for my parking lights,single-LED SW's for my door lights and 9-LED SuperWhites for my reverse lights. :)
They deliver quick-bet I have mine by Thursday from AZ>ME....

i can reach my drivers, but not my passengers. i asked about it in this thread and apparently you can reach them from the wheel well much easier. i broke my replacement bulb, so i have yet to try from there again.

If you are going through the wheel well and you are planning on changing out the turn signals, do it then. It's tight, even through the wheel well. When I changed out my turn signal lamps for chrome ones, I had to have my 15 year old do it because he has smaller hands. I have big paws. I had no trouble once removing the ECU cover reaching the running lights on the passenger side from under the hood.

Preacher 04-12-2004 02:33 PM

D,
What's the best way to get those pesky dome bulbs out?
I have chrome ones for them, but they don't look very accessable.
Any words o' wisdom?

D MENAC 7 04-12-2004 02:41 PM

If you are talking about the 194 map lights which are next to the moon roof controls up front, you take ouut the two screws up inside the eye glass holder. The whole unit pulls out and I know it feels like it's not wanting to come out because there are two clamps at the back side but if you pull just a bit harder the whole unit comes right out. This is the ONLY way to get them out. When you get the unit out the lamp sockets are removable by turning them to the left about a 1/4 turn then they come out. Pull out the old lkamp, put in the new one and reverse the whole process. I will say one thing. This will render your map lighhts useless. The amount of light that is cut down is at least 70% or more with the chromed 194s. I eventually went with bright white 194s and put in a coupld of single LEDs which I drilled out the holes for that I use for cruising night lights.

roboracer 04-13-2004 01:39 PM

what's the difference between the 7440 and 7443 bulbs?

So are the side marker and other headlights (the little ones) 194s also?

Want to make sure I get the right thing, and I think the posts in this thread refer to them as being 194s.

kellybrf 04-13-2004 02:02 PM

yes, they are. the blinkers are 7440s

7440s are single contact lamps such as the reverse and turn signals lamps. 7443 have dual filaments (if they were incadescent) in that they are brighter when stepping on the brake.

Great info, that should be a sticky somewhere.

Completely unrelated....black headliner?

Where did that come from, got pics?

roboracer 04-13-2004 04:11 PM

thanx for the info DMENAC7 & Preacher

Preacher 04-13-2004 04:39 PM

The black headliner's to go w my new leather seats.
I despise the nasty gray liner, this is an upgrade, goes w my new seats, black pearl chromed badges, and tint.....

God of Thunder 04-13-2004 06:30 PM

Where does one come across a black headliner?

D MENAC 7 04-13-2004 07:09 PM

^^^I'm with him^^^ Where can you get a black headliner?

Preacher 04-13-2004 11:02 PM

Mine came from the folks that are doing the CST leather seats, cost was $235.

Tamas 04-14-2004 08:38 PM

Care to post some pictures about that custom headliner? Maybe in the pictures/multimedia section?
Also, did they remove/reinstall the headliner for you or did you do it yourself?

(sorry for the thread hijacking)

Preacher 04-14-2004 10:22 PM

It's all (leather, tint, badges, headliner) being done while I'm in Europe next week,I'll gladly post pics when I return and get it back from the shop.

Renesis2004 06-19-2004 01:02 AM

Speaking of 3rd brake light... What's the trick to getting the inside trim (under the trunk lid) off? The screw/pop out retainers were no problem. It's that handle you use to pull the trunk lid down that won't let the trim come off. I don't want to ruin the appearance by prying too much. How do you get that thing off?

takahashi 07-22-2004 07:09 AM

Get all the screw off is ok. Yes you have to pull the handle down.... do not worry it click back right into the position.

I recently installed the 15LED at the rear brake light. I got it from autoilumination.com and there are 6 side LED +9 in front to make a matrix (more more confluent) look.

I love it.

Question to Dennis: Have you try a 9LED or 15LED Red to the 3rd brake light logo? Do you think it is worth?

takahashi 07-22-2004 07:22 AM

LED bulb specification from autolumination.com

I have found the spec of the LED bulb

Bulb/colour/intensity/angle

194 6led focused lens/ White /39000/55 Degrees
194 4led focused lens/ White /26000/45 Degrees
194 5LED Matrix / White / 46000 / 270 Degrees

7440 9led /White /79000/ 45 degrees
7440 15led /White / 120000 / 270 degrees
7443 9led /Red /77000/ 45 degrees
7443 15led /Red / 77000/ 270 degrees

7440 15led /Amber /120000/ 270 degrees
7443 15led /White / 79000/ 270 degrees

7440 9LED / Red/ 77000/ 45 degrees
7443 15led / Red / 77000 / 270 degrees

takahashi 07-22-2004 07:25 AM

Looking at the list.

Do you think the 7440 Amber 15LED as a side marker??? That will be VERY BRIGHT!!!

And the 15LED White reverse light?? Oh my

D MENAC 7 07-22-2004 07:25 AM

I will have to go revisit their site to see the 15 LED bulb, didn't know there was one of those out yet and that sound interesting.

I didn't try the LED in the third brake light because I thought that it would provide too much directional light which would have centered even more on the logo and lens. However, the 15 LED that you are describing sounds like I might take a look at that one. Thanks, Taka! :D

D MENAC 7 07-22-2004 07:28 AM

The side marker is a 194 and I think that the 15 LED white if it is like the red one you posted earlier, might be better for the 3rd brake light. You wouuld have to bend the wires over to get all of them to light up bright. I am going to check these out right now.

takahashi 07-22-2004 08:38 AM

Why and how to bend it over? Are they made that way already?

I don't understand Dennis...

Don't you found the red one safer for the for 3rd logo... i hate to spend $12 and find out it makes the brake light white :p

15 LED is out and i have it - it is great

D MENAC 7 07-22-2004 09:33 AM

There is no way to make the 3rd brake light white unless you removed the red lens in front of the LED lamp. The brake light/tail lght lamp has 4 contacts, 2 are ground (- negative) and 2 are power (+). When this is used in a non brake light/tail light socket (Such as is the 3rd brake light) to get the LEDs to light up as bright as possible youu have to combine the two positves and negatives. I believe there is a link on the autoilumination web site describing this.

I looked at the 15 LED array earlier and think that is a better idea than the 9 LED for the brake light/tail light lamp. I currently have the 9 LEDs in mine and it could be brighter with this 15 LED array since there is a reflector lens in the brake light/tail light assembyly. This would provide more light for the daytime. My other lamps, the reverse and turn signal I used the chrome style. They are darker than I would like, however, I am thinking about that 15 LED for the reverse light, just as a test. I am going to get the 15 LED array in white for the 3rd brake light to do a test on it and see what it is like using that lamp. I also have an idea as to how to disperse the lamp better across the entire red lens I might try at the same time. I'll keep things posted.

Thanks for the infor. :D

SuPerHerO::tOnY 07-22-2004 05:49 PM

wahhh i didnt bother reading everyone's comments but i want a set too!!!

D MENAC 7 07-22-2004 07:34 PM

Update: Taka, when I replied I didn't realize there was a 7440 in the 15 LED array so there is no reason to have to bend the wires over. Disregard.

takahashi 07-22-2004 07:45 PM

Damn you I was chasing Chris at autolumination's tail asking the same question :p

So all the other tail bulbs are 7440?? Only the tail/brake light is 7443?

D MENAC 7 07-22-2004 08:17 PM

Yes because the brake/tail light lamp is the only dual purpose lamp where it has to be lit at a lower level for tail lights but has to get bright for brake light. The turn signals both rear and front are 7440. The reverse lights and the 3rd brake light lamps are 7740. The running lights up front closeset to the Mazda emblem in the head light clusters are 194s as well as are the corner lamps. The lamps inside the doors are 194s as are the map lights. The map light lamps will hot hold a 5 LED 194, I tried and these are too large in diameter to get through the openings into the reflector lenses. The lamp that is in the center of the ceiling, is some kind of Festoon dome bulb, not sure which one but saw it on an earlier thread.

takahashi 07-22-2004 08:22 PM

Festoon is 31mm long

Dennis do you think it is a good look to change all bulbs LED at the back?

D MENAC 7 07-22-2004 08:29 PM

I personally didn't do it. I only put in the brake/tail light 9 LEDs. However, with the 15 LED array, I ordered one white and one amber, I also ordered two red ones to put in the brake/tail lamp to change out the 9 LED ones in there now. I am going to take a look after they come in and if I like them, I will buy the other two to change them out. I have the chromed lamps in there now and am concerned about them being bright enough. I know the reverse light at night is dimmer than I like however, my rear windows are tinted at 20%.

takahashi 07-22-2004 10:05 PM

ic...

15 LED superwhite will bind poeple eyes for sure ;) j.k

The amber is in white when unlided, so it is kinna a shealth bulb and if it works well it is a very good alternative and I will order one for the front blinkers as well. Side markers are ok and no need to change them. I think I change all the 194 in the car too, including the license plate at the back which have the blue vision (slightly yellow/slightly blue) ... I maybe wasting my money there :p
