Not sure but here's a link to the shop manual

Check the connectors. They cause trouble here and there.
You could switch the bulb to the LH side to see if it works and try to narrow things down.
Check with some of the parts vendors here if you need parts.
Place an ad in the wanted section as an alternative.
Also, very important:
If you replace the bulb read the warnings and follow the instructions.

sounds like a ballast problem to me. if it were a bulb it would just go out and your done. but bulbs dont often go out at that age especially not HID's. I wish i could help you more but i think your lady friend should have it checked out at a Mazda dealer to find the problem. If something is broken from wear and tear try to find a used headlight on ebay. Good luck!

04 RX-8 HID Problem
Interesting...
I just started having this problem with my aftermarket HIDs. I purchased them back in July 07 and never had any issue until now.
My aftermarket HIDs are rated at 6K Kelvin.
They would turn on with no problem, but after driving home and stoppping for gas, then to turn the lights back on, bulb would not turn on.
After 2 instances of this, I put the OEM HID bulbs back in and have NOT had anymore problems.
I plan to put my aftermarket bulbs back in and switch sides to see if the problem follows. I truly hope so.
I called the local dealership for pricing on a ballast and these people are straight tripping ($720 each without HID bulb).
I have been reading on the net and I find that people really push using Phillips bulb product, rather than an off brand HID bulb company.
My aftermarket bulbs are made by Sylvania. I found some Phillips bulbs, but these things are waaay more expensive.

the phillips bulbs are more expensive for a reason. Phillips is the only company that has a consistently good track record with HIDs. you may find other bulbs that will be great, but its a gamble.

Philips HID bulbs
I purchased the 6K Philips bulbs and have been running with these for about 2 weeks. When I put my original bulbs back in, I had no problems, but I was not satisfied with the color of the original bulbs.
I have the 6K color range that I was used too. I purchased the bulbs from Xenondepot.com. Cheaper than the dealership, but more expensive than the other place I purchased from.
Philips ($99 each bulb) versus PlasmaGarage.com ($75 each bulb).
