Question Stage 1 and auto owners

Hi all:

With all this talk about how great the install and power feels with the manual people, how about us auto owning 8 guys/gals? I have already told Maurice I'd pay the money to get the stage 1 setup for my auto. My question is to everyone else who owns an auto 8, would you be willing to purchase this unit?

I know the HP increase would not be as significant as the 6sp, but something is better than nothing. Even if power comes on from 4.5-5K to redline, that still give us about 2.3K to play with. The way I see it, any extra HP is better than no HP at all.

Now, I know Maurice has worked many many hours of perfecting the stage one ECU mod, who would be willing to pay for one for your auto 8?

Please post up here if you are interested.

Thanks,
Kevin
<who hopes the stage one will someday be available for auto 8's> :D

Unfortunately, the bigger question is - who is willing to give Maurice their automatic RX-8 for a month or two for the development work? Maurice has a 6 speed and is developing the Stage 1 and Stage 2 etc. on his own personal car, and there isn't an auto available to him just now...

Regards,
Gordon

Pretty close to the truth.
Actually we would probably need it for a week. No more.
The bulk of the work could now be done on a weekend. We DO know a lot more about this car than when we started.

However, this requires a week where the road conditions are pretty good.

While we do someof the work on a dyno, we HAVE to do road runs too.

At -40 tonight, and lots of snow, we are not doing much road testing at present!

Seriously, come springtime, if someone can help us out with making a car available with AT, and if 10 people were to commit, we could probably do it.

Things we would have to do:
1) Drill a hole in your exhaust pipe, before the cat, to install a wide band O2 sensor.

2) Run about 200km on it on dyno and road tests.

I think another option might be if someone with an AT would ask CZ for a MT unit to try it in the AT (of course the person must be willing to put a deposit down equal to the purchase price of the MT unit), and be willing to take a chance of blowing their engine or transmission (which I think would be very very slight, please correct me if I'm wrong CZ). Any takers? My thinking is that while the unit is not optimized for the AT, it might be close enough to not damage anything and provide enough increased perfomance to warrant an AT owner to buy it.

I do not **KNOW**, but I believe the tune on the AT would be substantially different than the MT version.
They have tuned it for more torque down lower in the rpm range.
The advertised specs for the RX-8 claim quite a bit higher maximum torque on the AT version.

I'd definitely buy one as well, if it improves the performance of my Auto 8.

Maurice:

Wish you lived closer as I would let you have my car for how ever long it takes. Once the roads clear up in April, I take my sleeping Miata out of storage. Anyone with an auto 8 live close by to Maurice?

Not that this has anything to do with the RX8, but I am just now selling my Probe GT '94 auto trans that I put a G-Force chip into (as well as K&N intake and Greddy cat back)

The shop mistakenly put in a superchips, and when they finally got the G-force in there the car was much more responsive, so by all means I think just because you have the auto trans doesn't mean you should be happy with stock! Good luck, and I hope you guys get a piggyback ECU from some vendor.

Also BTW the Gforce chip changes the VRIS points- I asked them to open it up about 500 rpm earlier- and you can really feel the pull when they open up.

Before we all get too enthusiastic, please remember the key elements for this to takeplace will be:

1) Availability of a car.
2) Good weather.

Thanks!

Kevin,

I think it is time for you to take a vacation and go visit Maurice in Edmonton to get the ball rolling.

Im somewhat interested but Im not sure Id buy it b/c I have afeeling that the Stage 1 wont do too much for the auto Rx8. Maybe after some test results I would change my mind. I would hope that it could atleastbring us back to the old bogus advertised rating of 210 crank hp. But guys I am speculatingthat the auto owners couldy see decent gains is if a Stage 2 version for the auto were produced. Maybe we should shootfor that instead of the Stage 1. Only problem is that I thinkthat we would have warranty issues w/that.

I think we would have the same gains similiar to the MT because isnt it just remap of the fuel system? And about stage 2, just put pack the old pipe when bringing in for service, no big deal.

The new version of the Stage 1 is almost at the same levels as the old Stage 2. Just FYI.

As I said before, if we get an auto to tune on, and about 10 interested people, it would be worth doing.
It would take us about a day to do the testing/tuning, then maybe a couple of hours later again to finalize it.

If someone wnats to organize this I am willing to do the work.
