Someone please help me figure out how to connect to my INTx with a post 1980 laptop

I have a laptop with no built in serial port. I am running WXP SP2 and have used 2 USB to serial adapters.

1 by my laptop manufacturer (IBM/Lenovo) that works with EVERY OTHER GD DEVICE IN THE WHOLE FLIPPING WORLD, but not my intx. (even when I changed the damn port to com1)

Another by some chinese el cheapo manu. (this one works with everything else also)

I have even tried letting the USB adapter sit on com7 and then used a virtual serial adapter on com1 that forwarded everything to com7. (yep I was gettin' desparate)

What do you guys use to connect. I got rid of my laptop with a built in serial last week. I need to find a solution pronto.

Thanks,

Slavearm

PS- I know my cable is good, because it works to my DASH.

i went to radio shack, bought the cheapest usb to serial connector they had. Installed the drivers, then hooked up the serial to usb dongle, then plugged into laptop. WinXP installed the device and then I went to system settings->hardware and changed it from whatever com port it defaulted to, to com1.

Then it worked. If I plug the dongle into a different usb port, the system starts fresh and I have to repeat the above process.

So... um.. Radio Shack doesn't keep them in store anymore, and I have bought 3 today and every single one of them used the same exact "Prolific" Serial to USB chipset, and not one of them has worked for me.

start>control panel>system>hardware tab>device manager>com ports>find the com port for your serial connector and install driver.

Grrrr.... you know what it is... the first two I bought are no bueno. The last two are fine, but it sure helps to plug in the POS ****DONGLE****

Why does Microtech do that crap when every other ECU doesn't?
