What does the "immobilizer sensor" look like? I am trying to find a way to disable teh immobilizer for a push button start. I was thinking of wrapping the key in wire and locating it near the immobilizer sensor.
Coil is around the keyhole, four wires to the connector,

Have you considered you would have to remove the actual key lock mechanism to disable the column lock? Then the car would be 'stealable' by a five-year-old.....and prolly not covered when your insurance adjuster finds out.
If you do bypass all those security features, drop me an email with your address......
I am looking at the Asian wolf smart combination keypad. My idea is I don't want to have to put the key in at all (of course need to look into the wheel lock.) Enter my code into the key pad press button and go, Mine is an 04 so hoping more basic tech. Was even thinking of using the garage remote button as suggested here. Looked at the dgital gaurd dog Keyless2 go, but seems very expensive for something that can be doen with an immobilizer.
I want the cool factor from the 'Transporter' I have already made a number of customizations and only had the car for a month and a half (one of the reasons I went back to the RX8 over the Corvette) I am a tech guy as well as a car guy, so I am integrating my hobbies. I am also adding a module that will allow me to control my Android phone via the head unit touchscreen, giving me all access to the goodies on the phone (pandora radio, NAV, car stats, bluetooth calling and the like.) so a little driving a little data input LOL.
Hey Stealth, using your DIY...how would this install for an auto? Also, if there are only 3 wires you connect...1 ground, 1 power and 1 to the clutch for a manual...how does the signal get sent to the starter to start the engine? Not questioning your DIY...trying to understand how it all works lol I would like to do this but I have an auto...so not sure how the install is supposed to take place then.
I know this thread is pretty much dead but has anyone thought of wiring a flip switch to turn the cars power on? It would be in my mind at least the same thing, just instead of a key, it would be the flip switch. Which could be hidden on the left side by the traction control and the start button could be somewhere visible. Just my thoughts.
Hello 2021
In the UK s1 8's don't have cruise control. during the previous national lockdown, I manage to get hold of a
Mazda 6 steering wheel with a very reasonable price ( bargain) to utilize the cruise control.
There is one empty **** on the clock wiring of the steering wheel which I use shamelessly to bring starter push bottom on my steering.
I ask a guy to 3D print my design, bought a red push start button on eBay, print some graphics under pushbuttons, and did my own R&D.
Now, it been while I am using this, and soon going to add extra mini relays board to improve some minor issues.
Currently, it works base on one relay negative activated under dictation on the clutch push switch.
(UK versions only have one clutch switch)
So, key in IG ( which I can make it total keyless if I want, but I won't because the steering lock is a neat feature to have)
and pushing clutch the red light in the switch will light up becomes ready to start.
Well after finding flat-bottom steering I left with no other option than to use an auto multi-function key,
In sum best way is to install an optocoupler in conjunction with (low current) a really.
