DIY: How to clean the MAF.

Oh, about the residue, spray carb cleaner on one of your fingers, and CRC cleaner on another, then blow on them. The carb cleaner contains a lubricant and will leave behind an oily substance. CRC will all disapear. Like someone said why not use the right tool for the right job!! The "wire" inside the MAF is coiled (u need a magnifying glass to see it) and the lubricant will cling in between the coils and actually change it's resistance!

Got a CEL telling me that the MAF sensor had wrong input so I'm purchased some cleaning stuff.
Couldnt find MAF Cleaner but I found this CRC Electronic cleaner, it says on the bottle that it cleans oil, grease & dust without leaving any rest's.

BECAREFUL WHEN CLEANING THE MAFS! Use the dry method first, use a rag or paper towel and GENTLY clean the screen. If you take out the sensor you use a dry cloth/papertowel and try to wipe away the dust and grime. If its still dirty , use electrolisis solution or some type of solution you can use on wiping down electronics.
Seen to many people including my buddies and myself blow a MAFS by just dowsing the sensor with harsh cleaning solution. Just take your time and be extra careful and treat that sensor like the Rahges JULES!
MAFS for our cars are not cheap,so be careful.....

Its safe on the bulb and the wires and it cost me 7.95
^ol skool thread bump :D but since it's up.. I just cleaned my maf last week and my car's idle was running like crap afterwards. Checked it yesterday and noticed I stripped out the threads for one of the screws holding the maf sensor in so it wasnt getting a good seal. Went to the hardware store and bought a screw slightly bigger then the original and got a good seal again. Car runs like a champ.. best 50 cent fix ever.
Moral is.. be careful tightening the screws, it strips easily.

Gitfiddle I was about to post that info since someone bumped this. Happened to me as well because the threads are plastic in there lol. I didn't even get a chance to try and strip mine the very first time I ever removed the maf the threads came out with the screw on one of them.
^^ Yeah, the threads are a pos in there 
. My car felt like one of those old motel vibrating beds at stoplights. After I secured it with a bigger screw in the hardware store's parking lot, then drove to the first stoplight and the vibrating was gone.. I think I gave a high five to the person in the car next to me... Im not sure.. I was pretty happy

My CEL was going on and off while driving. I had just changed the oil, plugs, coils and the car was running fine.
After cleaning the MAF (filthy) and driving for 45 min bye bye CEL. This simple DIY saved me quite a bit of money. I was just about to put it in the shop so thanks for the great info.

Great DIY - Friday last week got a CEL of P0172 right after a nice detonation in the exhaust leaving the car unable to idle. Removed the MAF and gave it a few squirts of CRC MAF cleaner and it's back to it's happy place.
I'll definitely be doing this each six months !

WD 40 is light oil in a solvent base. The worst thing you can do is put oil on the MAF sensor. Any auto parts store or department should sell a specific MAF cleaner solvent in a spray can.
If your air filter and intake clamps/seals are working properly the MAF sensor should rarely get dirty. However, an oil based filter like a K&N can shed oil on the MAF and intake interior surfaces if too much oil is used after cleaning it.
