this maybe a stupid question, but how do you get the key ring on the 05 remote? i got it working and everything, but how do you get a key ring on it?, does that little chrome piece on the bottom snap off or open?

I just got a new 04 last week and my salesman talked to the service guy in charge of setting up keys and they were going to hook me up w/two 05 key fobs absolutely free. Unfortunately he said he spent 15 minutes trying to program them for the car but no dice. So I got the old key fobs instead. I guess the problem was that there weren't already two 04 keys programmed to the car so it wouldn't accept the 05? Maybe now that I have two 04 keys I'll go back and see if I can convince him to try once more.

I just programmed my '05 key to my '04 8 without a hitch. I really want to say thanks to the other 8 owners out there participating in this forum. The community here is fantastic and it really makes owning a great car that much more fantastic, especially if you enjoy personalizing it like I do.

05 Key Price

Hi,
I noticed that some people bought the blank key from the website posted earlier it costs $170.00 for 1. For those who bought at the dealership how much did it cost. I am very excited, when I talked to Mazda about them making a 05 key fob for the 04's they said they would pass it along and there wasn't one out. I wish I knew about this before

I just tried the programming procedure with mixed success.

the key coded fine; the transmitter took a few tries; but the boot release wont work?

any secret to getting the boot button to work?

Are you saying that the lock/open/panic buttons do work but the trunk release doesn't?
Either your remote is flawed or maybe you got one of those newer remotes where the trunk release has a delay feature... try to hold it down.

For the record, I got my remote and blank key and programmed both in a few minutes today without a hitch.
The local lock store only wanted a buck for cutting the key... woot!

Question Trunk/boot....

Did you check the glovebox override switch?

this is exactly the problem. I'll try holding the button down longer.

i'll check it out but I don't think it is the glovebox button as my other remotes work.

the funny part is I can bump my old remotes off the system so they don't work, then recode them and they work fine, boot release included.

one day I'll have time to go back to the dealers.

I've got a question:

I have an '04 8 and I have always wanted to upgrade to the '05 key. There is a guy who has an extra 05 key that will sell it to me cheaper than the $170 key from mazdaparts. The key is already cut but is brand new. I read somewhere in this forum before that it is possible to buy and replace just the key part itself. Hense, I will be buying this piece from this guy for just the FOB. Is this true? How much will the key (silver part) cost from a dealer?

Thanks...

I'm pretty sure they are separate parts and can be separated. Take a look at it and see how it comes apart. BTW, check eBay for the prices those fobs have sold for in the past. I'm sure it was much, much less than $170.

I think you need 2 remotes that are already "registered" in the PCM in order to register a third unit.

I don't think you need two remotes. I know you must at least have one of them, but what you change from the 04 remote to the 05 or newer, it actually changes the frequency that it's transmitted. So, the old remotes will be useless, unless you go back and program them. You can only use one set at a time(either the 05 or newer, or the o4 remotes.)

Don't know, but I'll be trying tonight with my 04 keys and my new switchblade 05 key. I'll post back if it worked or not.

i thought i read somewhere that as long as you program (or reprogram) them all at the same time that they will all function properly.

alcimedes:
Did you buy the mazdaparts $170 key or did you ebay it then get a new key blank?

I got a key blank and an already cut key/remote from ebay.

That being said, I've got a bit of a problem.

The remote won't reprogram. I've followed the steps a dozen times and for the life of me I can't figure out what I'm doing wrong.

I put the new (switchblade style) key into the ignition, and follow the standard steps. When it's ready to go, the locks lock/unlock.

I press the unlock key on the new remote twice. Nothing. I press the lock button twice, nothing. However, if I press any of the buttons on my two older remotes twice the locks lock/unlock and all is well.

When I pull the new switchblade style key out of the ignition, the locks go through their lock/unlock/lock/unlock cycle.

However, the new key isn't programmed. The key lights up when I press a button, but it won't work.

Any ideas?

hmmm... weird

Are you sure you did the correct steps in the sequence in which they should? Did you use 2 original keys before the new (3rd key) switchblade? Its been said that you need 2 original 04 keys/fob to be able to reprogram a 3rd (being the 05 retractable).

On a side note:
How much did the key blank cost you and where did you buy? If from a dealer, did they have it in stock? And where did you have yours cut? I've heard Home Depot has caused a few problems.

I picked up my key blank from Rosenthal Mazda for $35. Took a day or two for it to show up. I brought it over to my local Ace Hardware and they cut it no problem. Just make sure it's deep enough. Try it after it's cut. As they cut keys the spacer and cutting wheel wear at slightly different rates, so you can get a key that works but isn't as smooth as it should be. That being said:

The key is programmed fine. I've used it to drive the car around no problem. The remote is the problem. I have two original keys and remotes. Every step seems to match the write-ups as far as how the car is responding to the programming of the remotes, it just isn't picking up the new switchblade style remote signal (at least that's what it seems like).

A question for those who have this style of key. What color is the middle part when it lights up? Should it turn orange for a half second or so then go off? I'm wondering if the battery is shot in the remote.

Orange? On mine, the light in the middle is red, not orange. Yes, it turns on for a half second, then goes off even if I hold the open or close buttons down.

Orange/red, whichever. It sounds like if it lights up it should have enough juice. Maybe I'll bite the bullet and swing by a dealership and see if I can get someone to program the key for me. Poop.
