TX What exactly is a duel exhaust system?

What exactly is a duel exhaust system? I was planning on getting a Borla Exhaust System soon but after looking around I don't know if this is the best option.

Is this considered a duel exhaust because it has two mufflers?

Or are they both considered duel exhaust because of the piping? And if there is a difference what are the advantages/disadvantages of both of them?

Well for our 8's a dual exhaust is basically just like our stock one 2 exhaust tips...some there is one muffler that splits into to tips(just like stock) or others have 2 mufflers one on each pipe(Like the borla pictured above)
Single exhaust is basically a muffler and then the tip comes out one side like the HKS

as for which is better I don't think one is better than the other it all depends on which one sounds better you are only looking at a MAX of 5HP gain on any system but realistically its like 1-2 HP...so go to YouTube and check out the different exhaust for our car and decide which one sounds the best to you and that is the one you should get

Its just a different way of saying that there are two mufflers on the catback. For example the hks 'hipower' is a single exit exhaust, whereas the legamax is a dual exhaust

RX8's don't have dual exhaust.

It's when you have two exhaust manifolds and a seperate exhaust for each side, like on a V 8.

We have a single exhaust that splits up into two muffler for the dual exhaust look.

Thanks for the help.
So from what I understand, our car is not duel exhaust no matter what. And getting a system that splits into two mufflers vs a system that splits after one muffler makes no difference other than sound?

By single exit exhaust you mean...? Just one tip coming from that back? Sorry I'm new and unfamiliar with a lot of the terms used.

Just to clarify, the single exit exhausts allow my car to perform better.
But why do all the aftermarket exhausts have 2 exits?

It can look funky to some with just 1 exhaust exit. Mostly aesthetics. And not all of our exhausts have 2 exits, the above mentioned HKS Hi Power is just 1 exit, or you could build your own.

For our car, horsepower gain is negligable. So, most people go the route of keeping the dual exit to keep the "stock" look with just bigger tips. The sound produced by the dual exit will be deeper than the single exit. Not everyone is a fan of raspy exhaust (not that single exit's give it rasp) im just saying...

I agree with this, true dual exhaust is 2 different pipes/cats/mufflers that never come together. I believe we have single exhaust no matter how many mufflers or tips you attach to it. I guess in our case I would think it's a single exhaust with dual mufflers for most aftermarket catbacks.

In terms for RX-8ology the dual exhaust... refers to dual tips. plain and simple

Not sure if it's available for the rx8 but rx7s have the option of the racing beat "true dual full exhaust"

^never heard or seen a TRUE dual system on our car they would have to split up the exhaust ports into 2 exhaust manifolds 2 cats etc etc....but i'm sure if you were doing this as AFTERMARKET then the cat's would not be there!

On the RX7, you don't want a true dual exhaust. you want them to combine some place after the header for the best performance. The racing exhaust I had on my RX7 came together as one just in front of the rear axle.
A dual exhaust on the RX8, so far, has been shown to be impracticable because of the siamese center port.

Rotary Extreme is working on a dual exhaust system for the rx8. They have a dual cat back (pic below) now and supposedly working on a dual header and midpipe.

Would a "duel" exhaust be one where 2 pipes are fighting each other?

A true "dual" system would be as described above. One pipe for each rotor never collecting. On nonturbo RX-7's, true duals do work well but they work best on stock to moderately ported engines and get progressively worse with porting styles where port overlap increases. Once you get into a bridge or a peripheral port engine, they pretty much have to be collected as top end power will suffer dramatically if they aren't. My biggest complaint about true duals is the sound. It's terrible yet some still like it. I personally think it sounds like a cross between a lawnmower and a Harley.

Yes, I am still working on the dual header/midpipe. Just finishing up on some FD v-mounts first.

The header I have comming out will split the siamese port with a flange built into the header. Each rotor will have its own exhaust pathway. The midepipe will be offered with and with out cats. Both midpipe options will have silincers. Only once its done and on the dyno will I find out if my efforts have paid off. The cat-back does allow the engine to make more power on top end. Dyno on website. Also the price is comming down. I have a new welder.
