Top speed with FI
What is the fastest you FI guys have gone in a RX-8? Although I don't condone triple digit speeding, I realize that people want to test the limits of their purchase. :)

On the track of course ;)
|
Is there something I'm missing? This car is governed at 140 mph. How would having forced induction change the top speed on this car?
|
it's governed at 140mph? my speed governor must be broken then......
|
We went over 148 on the dyno :) in NA form
|
So that means this car isn't governed?
|
Look for the second clicky

I think they way they did the governing was the RPM's are limited in fifth gear
|
That was a fifth gear pull to 9,500 RPM @ 184 MPH in the video :)

The problem with the top speed is unless you're going down hill, the engine isn't powerful enough to push the car any further. With a turbo it should be...I'm also curious as to the original poster's question. |
I imagine you should be able to go faster with FI it will help with the aerodynamic drag that you need to overcome by giving you more power, hence allowing you to go faster.

I think if you were to shift to 6th you would lose speed. |

unless they had the gearing changed, that would be quite impossible, as 80 mph in 6th gear is 4000 rpm, that means that 180 in 6th would be right around 9000 rpm. i believe that was a 6th gear pull to redline |
Well I've gone 167 in my NA 6 speed.... Nice cool florida night 2 am. 6 mile visibilty. nothing in either direction on this road for 25 + miles. started slowing down around 140... started crawling @ 150 and took almost 30 seconds to make 167. IIRC 4th topped out at 137, 5th was 151 and then to 6th shifting around 9000.

That was on a dyno with ZERO wind resistance guys :)
It was fifth gear - I was there. |

Redline in 5th gear is 227 KPH = 141 MPH. Trust me. :) |
I don't know what kind of crack you guys are smoking, but I've redlined 5th gear at 141 mph. I guess it could have gone a bit faster since I didn't hit fuel cutoff but there was definitely a BEEP.
Regardless, 184 mph is ONLY attainable in 6th gear. |
^^absolutely, wind resistance has ZERO effect on gear ratios.

different tire sizes will make a difference in the ACTUAL speed of the car, but the speed we are discussing is the actual speedometer reading, which is derived from the drive train of the rx-8 before the tires. |
Oops, that might have been a 6th gear pull. There is another clicky that showed 152 MPH in fifth. Sorry about that... :(
Look for this one: rx8_5thgeardyno.wmv |
You guys are talking about DMP's Dyno? it did 152 in 5th and 184 in 6th.
