Throwing a CEL. Harmful to the car?

As some of you guys know from my previous post, Im installing a custom 3" exhaust, no cats, no mufflers, just a resonator. Obviously Im going to throw a CEL and Im probably going to have to deal with it, but when I took it to the shop, the mechanic who was going to install it for me, at the last second said hes not going to do it bc he doesn't want to mess with my CAT because supposedly its going to make millions of problems for the car, mess up the ECU, and virtually, cause nothing but problems for the car, I've heard this from quite a bit of people. On the other hand, I personally thought throwing the CEL is harmless, just meaning that the CAT isn't functioning. Is throwing a CEL from a downpipe really harmful to the car or not? Im pretty sure its NOT, but just need some reinforcement. Im starting to think about not even installing the exhaust Thanks guys.

You could throw on a high flow cat...
Don't forget the O2 sensor(s) for the ECU

Well I may end up throwing on a high flow cat later on, right now I just wanna get all the exhaust flames out of me lol. As for the O2 sensors, my piping has a bung already for the primary o2 sensor to fit into, is that what you mean or am I missing your point?

if you have a 02 bung and use is you will have a cel.. as to the sensors, life is a risk..

still is not the smart thing to do...

? if all you want to do is shoot flames, why do you care??

It is also a Federal Felony for him to do this for your car. You can do it your self and it's a mere slap on the wrist, if you get cought. But, don't ask someone else to do it.

The issue with the constant CEL on is besides the issue of it being fugly on your dash, if another thing goes wrong that would normally trip your CEL, you would have no idea & that could potentially damage your engine. Sorry for being obvious but that's the issue.

Yeah, thats a known. I figured I would just check the CEL every once in a while with the computer. The real reason of my not wanting it is, like you mentioned, the fugly dash. Guess I'll have to take the bulb out, and check the car out every once in a while
