Sweet SOHN OMP Bladder idea...
I have ordered my SOHN OMP and I'm going to use a 1.5L Camelbak Bladder in a 1.5-1.7L steel tube with simple bracket mounts to hold my 2 stroke oil. Will post when completed

U don't happen to be in the military are you?
hahah interesting....
Subbed for interest |

I definitely am, The Canadian forces though...
how did you guess :P |
subbed...
just because I can I will put a stainless steel sleeve over the tube with shrink wrap and some mild adhesive to hold it in place at either end... try and make the setup look nice

In in the USMC, we do similar let's use this to make this work methods lol

Who else would be in Petawawa Sounds like fun. I really like the idea of using something different. I am going to use a mini keg for my gas can in my Austin 1100. I have been thinking a lot of a solution to 2 canisters where the one is. subscribed for sure. Keep in mind adhesives aren't worth a shit around petroleum products. |
noted, I will use hose clamps then :P the adhesive is just to ensure the SS doesn't slide around on the tube (*crap now I gotta see if the shrink tube will stay in place on a rubber tube with glue*)... I like function but looks are important too... And just a note, I don't like rainbow engine bays, just nice clean silver, greys, blacks, anything that can rust gets paint!
, I can't see this going well but I would love to be proven wrong.
well I figure with a bladder I never need to worry about air getting in due to sloshing or anything weird, and 1.5L is easy enough to keep track of, besides if it doesn't work I don't care, I didn't pay anything to get the bladder and the tubes and stuff! :D Perks of knowing material technicians...
besides the hose that comes with the bladder should resist oil easy enough, and if not I can swap it for another kind, the hose clamps should prevent leaks and I can get the mat techs to fabricate a tube with a flat back, and two thin flat pieces on the front with a clear plastic face in between (*maybe an inch or two wide for easy viewing*) also leave a small gap at the bottom or cut a hole in the plastic so I can poke the tube out there... maybe use a little bar of metal straight across the inside a cm infront of the plastic for the top of the camelbak to hook on so it stands upright :P I get my car back from Mazda at the end of the month (*said my engine is on back order from Japan... >:X bs I think but w/e*) and I would say give me a week or two after that to figure it out from there and we will have results whether s***ty or not.. |
why not just use the washer fluid tank? thats what i did
I like the idea of the washer fluid container because of the dummy light. What did you use for your washer fluid?

Well I for one use my washer fluid. |
.... perhaps I could use the bladder for washer fluid instead then and use the washer tank for oil... although I'm under my hood often enough I don't think I would have to worry
although I'm painting that damn washer fluid tank regardless... so brutal |

yes, the washer fluid cap has a small hole for air-- thats why i used it
You wouldn't get the same air pressure (back pressure) with a soft lined bag as a hard walled container though.
Not gonna lie, I hadn't thought of that, but thats one reason for a bladder, it just shrinks instead of creating a vacuum, at least until it's empty, but with 1.5 liters that shouldn't be a problem, I just have to not be a dumba** and check it maybe twice a week..
sound like a lot of effort to use a bladder...
+1 I would just buy a reservoir or use the washer fluid reservoir.
Yeah the more I think about it, the dumber this idea seems.

and manually spray water on the windshield for bird droppings? |
Yeah, I want a functional washer fluid thingy... besides I could mount it pretty much anywhere in the engine bay, probably best if it has the hose at the bottom though, less restrictive... But I'm still going to try this, could be a fun project... And I have to break in my engine for a bit before I put the SOHN OMP on, being brand new and all... PS They said my engine shipped today so it will be in by the end of the week and they can start putting it back together...

nope, shes new... I made sure to clarify about that! :P
Engine replacement handled under warranty entail installing a reman not a new engine I don't care what the dealer told you! Secondly you don't have to wait to "break in" the engine before installing the Sohn adapter.
and it is just the short block
^ Exactly!
well you learn something new everyday, and I thought you needed to avoid 2 stroke for a while with new engines... Whats the explanation behind that

Who told you that? There is no reason to not premix or run the SOHN during break-in. I suggest to read the threads linked in my sig and also read up and try to get a good understanding of the vehicle your purchased. |
Before trying this, you might want to put the camelback in your oven set to say 275F for a while and see what happens ...
the oil in the bladder would not be from the oil pan, so it should be the ambient temp of the engine bay, and I gathered that info from reading about new engine, apparently I was wrong, although I'm here so I can learn, at least I'm trying ^_^ and if this doesn't work, well we will know, and if it does I can make a nice simple DIY version instead of a fancier one..

I'm not suggesting that 275F is the ambient temp of the engine bay (though even filled with oil, the temp of the outer surface of the plastic will be higher than the temp of the contained oil). I'm pointing out that soft plastic generally degrades faster in higher temps than hard plastic. Consider too, that in the usual location near the windshield washer tank, if you do have a leak there's a good chance you'll dump the oil on the hot exhaust with a resulting good chance of starting a fire. Maybe it'll be fine, maybe not, just sayin'.
definately raises a valid point with the header on that side |
it'll be in a steel tube, should be good, I may change up the tubing for something better, but thats about it
are they done yet? hope that ure going to show us ur DIY....

yeah, pretty much, the point of the bladder is to avoid sloshing as it won't fill with air like a solid container. Also allows me to build my own container for the bladder, which doesn't need to be leak proof, it's just there to hold it and look pretty.. not a conventional mod I wouldn't think but I like the idea and we'll see if it works and if theres any benefit to using a bladder even if it isn't huge..
So... any progress? I'm interested to see if this was an ok idea or a huge waste of time
You should be done with this by now. Whats the hold up?
as mentioned mazda has my car, although they have my engine now and it should be done this week
EDIT: Sorry this is taking so long, it's taken them about a month to do all the work on my car, but I should be able to conclude this thread shortly |
Thats strange that Mazda had your car for that long. Anyways good luck I want to see the finished product.
ok they said my engine was on order from japan.. (*weird*) and they rebuilt my tranny... ALTHOUGH (*I love my dealership*), they installed my header back exhaust, CAI, and lightweight flywheel for free while they were at it ^_^ and they've always done quick and proper work on my car before so I don't mind them taking there time once..

really? wow... my stealership told me they dont do install any aftermarket parts |
eh I kinda got a bit of a lemon as a used car, so they've been really good about it, plus they try to help me out because I'm in the infantry and the service manager has a lot of respect for my job
