Stage 2 Clutch: ACT or Comp. Clutch

I try to avoid creating threads, but I guess I can't always find the right information. I am not making a thread to ask “What clutch should I buy?” or “What is the best clutch?”

I did some searching and could not find any reviews on stage 2 ACT or Competition Clutch, so I was wondering if anyone has ran a stage 2 ACT or comp. clutch? Clutch pedal feel comparison to stock?

Any reviews are helpful. Thanks!

If this question has already been answered I apologize and would appreciate a link to it.

Why do you want a stage 2 clutch on a NA RX-8? The stock Exedy is more than capable, even for turbocharged applications (I run it). I think Shadycrew31 has the ACT Stage 2, maybe he will chime in.

It's only going to be a D.D. for another year. After that I am still trying to figure out what I want to do with it mod wise. Plus after ordering and shipping to Canada there is only a $75 difference between ordering a stock exedy kit and picking up a local brand new stage 2 comp or ACT clutch kit.

Yes, but the stock Exedy (not stage 1) is a very good clutch, unless you are adding forced induction, no upgrade is necessary unless you are wanting to save weight and neither of the options you are looking at are lighter as far as I know.

not to mention the stage 2 has very little slip tolerance thanks to its stronger dampening springs so it is going to engage hard right away ... you will hate yourself after driving daily with it.

I have this act clutch: http://item.mobileweb.ebay.com/viewi...d=160347788516

As well as the act prolite flywheel. I like the combo although it is a pain in the *** in low rpms. I did buy the car with this though so I can't compare to stock.

A Stage 1000 would be 500 times better yet ...

Not really surprised that it's a PITA, that's like a stage 4 clutch.

Why didn't i think of that!

I appreciate the advice, but as you failed to read at the top I am not looking for advice on what clutch to get. Was simply looking for reviews.
But not your fault, you saw another "Need help picking clutch" and saw the opportunity to flame.

Just buy a act 6 puck sprung close to stock feel handles the abuse from drifting.

IMO,

Since it is apart, get a light flywheel and an OEM style clutch. I did a stage one, not a 2, and it is a PITA. The OEM lasted 107,000 miles, and looked great when the throw out bearing failed. The Stage One is the only mode I wish I had back.

Did you have the a LWFW w/ your stage 1? I'm still thinking of keeping my resurfaced oem flywheel (that's if it's in good shape which it should be)

If you thought that was a flame then maybe you need to be wearing thicker panties. Its no skin off my back if you end up being one more clueless 8 owner with an expensive, overly stiff, chattering, grabby clutch rated for 3x+ more torque than the best NA Renesis engine will ever make. Funny how I can race three years on an OE clutch including hundreds of 7500+ drag launches and it still looks like new. If I wanted to flame you I could have just pointed out how you're just another lost little boy stumbling around in the RX8Club woods with a comprehension level so low that he can't recognize good advice no matter how exquisitely presented on a silver platter it is, but I didn't do that now did I? Since you went an opened that door all on your own, I didn't expect you to any more comprehend my prior post than the good advise of everyone else telling you to stick with an OE type clutch rather than get caught up in the more is better mentality of people who have no idea what they're doing. A babe in the woods is nothing to be ashamed of. The only shame comes from not following the path that has already been clearly laid out for you by the most experienced mountain men of this forum. Otherwise vendor bears got to eat too ....

Hahaha. Well put sir, well put.
The issue I had was that I was not asking which clutch I should purchase. I did do some research and saw that you, as well as many other seasoned professionals, had posted about the OEM clutch. I was merely curious if anyone had used the ACT or Comp clutch.
I do appreciate you guys posting though. No one is forcing/paying you to do so and the information you have provided on other forums has been useful.
P.S: I can recognize good advice. I did not hear any reviews on either of the clutch kits I had asked about; therefore, I purchased a product that I had seen reviews on. I did in fact purchase the Exedy OE kit.

I dont have any experience with the ACT or Comp Clutch stage 2, but I currently have the Exedy stage 2, 3 puck, ceramic clutch with the ACT prolite flywheel. I've used the Prolite Flywheel with the stock clutch, Exedy stage one, ACT organic street disc, and the Centerforce DFX over the last 8 years. My RX8 is my first and manual tran and I wanted to gain some experience with other types of clutches so i changed quite often. The Exedy stage 2 is by far my favorite. Admitedly, when I first installed my stage 2, it felt like the biggest mistake I've made since the engagement felt very different for all my other clutches. It took around 500 miles to both, break it in and get use it, and now I think it's amazing. It revs faster, shifts quicker and the pedal feel isn't far from stock. It does have a somewhat "off-on" feel to the engagement and also "chatters" during 1st gear engagement. That being said, I dont see myself going back to any of the former mentioned clutchs.

One thing i want to add, is that despite the fact that you may not NEED a stage 2 clutch, you may find that it suits you better. Everyone here is right. You dont need anything stronger that the OEM clutch on an NA RX8. But that doesnt mean a stage 2 isn't a good option. Despite everyone's opinion, you have to try things out for yourself. Just my 2 cents.

Good luck, Jon

@ Gregorie,

Yes, light flywheel with stage 1. If you have it apart, put in the light one. I got mine from BHR. That also means you can take the car apart, swap parts, put it back in, and be done. Even when you suck at putting the trans back in as bad as I do. Then you have a flywheel to look at and keep thinking OMG, I cannot believe I drove around spinning that hunk of iron for all that time. You will have a little low RPM chatter, below 2K, but worth it. The other issue is wheel spin in first and second. I can live with both.

Someone on this forum has my old flywheel. A picture of OEM vs. light would be nice. I will take the OEM picture when it wanders home. I have the light picture someplace.

Depends where you live. I picked up a local kit cheaper then ordering online, but I'm in the land of the igloos so shipping and tax is pretty pricey.

^Yes.. Not too far from stock just a stiffer pedal and engagement isnt too harsh (atleast not as bad as some people exaggerate it to be).
If you go this route make sure to get a sprung clutch as unsprung ones have very harsh engagement and will wear out much quicker than ones with springs.

A majority of misinformed or inaccurate opinions still equals bad advice regardless

I'm in Montreal QC Canada I'll mostly go with the stock clutch. But where is a good repair shop Machanic in my area who can do the job without me losing a arm and leg..
