Has anyone had any of the gt packages installed in their car? i'm looking into getting the gt-4 package next week which claims 37 hp increase. anyone care to comment? im going to pocono speedway and have a date with my buddy's stage 2 cobalt SS and wanted to know how much more i'm gonna be smokin him. you will be lucky to gain 5 whp.

 

You will be smokin gig time if you like cidars, otherwise SR is all hype.

Most gain from a straight pipe is 8 RWP. Intake may add 3 more HP.

 

if you want best gain for the buck, get a straight pipe ($150-250) and an accessport reflasher from MazdaManiac with a tuned map ($700). That combo will net you 15-30 whp gains, and because the accessport can mask out the missing cat cel, you won't have xmas lights and you can increase radiator fan speeds and omp output while you're at it.

 

I wouldnt waste my money on that package!

but i would recommend getting the flywheel clutch combo..

and the cobb AP

that should make you happy.. and if your coils are bad the mazsport ignition!

intake doesnt do much its mainly a upper rpm gain not so much lower rpm..

and the pullleys didnt do much either only thing is when its hot otuside my car doesnt have to turnt he fans on once the car is off it helped out a bit on the cooling part.. and the ac still feels good

 

mysql, i figured that it was bs, ust wanted to check. I have like $2000 to spend and don't ever plan on going turbo. Accessport and straitpipe is about $1000. what would you do with the remaining 1000 in my situation.

 

depends on your other mods and how many miles are on your car.

if you don't have an exhaust, I'd look into that. If you have stock rims, I'd also look into aftermarket ones, or new tires.

If your car has 50-60k miles or more, I'd consider getting a lightweight flywheel and clutch + install = ~$1000.

mods like swaybars and sts also can make the car feel a lot nicer without much expense.

 

+1 for the flywheel everyone that I have read about getting this done has LOVED it.

You may also want to get the Axial Flow Short Shifter too. that is another well loved mod by many...

 

I've done both, the flywheel is nice, but I wouldn't call it amazing or mind blowing. Your first few gears will have a small hp gain, which in of itself, is nothing you can really notice in the butt dyno. I wouldn't bother doing it unless your clutch is well used and you need it replaced anyway, or you have money burning in your pocket.

 

If I was racing the Cobalt SS, and had $1000 left after the straight pipe (which will throw a check engine light, smell nasty, etc btw), I would look to get the 55 hp nitrous kit from Zex (look on the board, as many on here have it).

 

he said he doesn't plan on going turbo. I took that to mean no FI.

 

if i had $1000 to blow i'd definitely get lightweight rims. cant go wrong with enkei rpf-1s.

afaik, every 1lb you reduce off 1 rim is comparable (since its rotational mass) to 4lbs off the chassis. enkei rpf-1s can cut 5lbs per rim, so thats 5x4x5=100lbs. also, its said that every 10lbs removed is ~equal to 1whp. so thats an increase of 10whp.

i wouldnt get a straightpipe, unless its racing only. thats a lot of bad pollutants. i cant argue about the increase in hp though. +1 on the accessport though.

 

if you are going to the track get some R compounds + wheels, will be allot more beneficial then the power modes. (unless you already run on R compounds)

Maybe. To me the turbo install & equipment is far, far more complicated than a nitrous install. I would never do another turbo on my car, but I just might do nitrous. For about $1000-$1200, you can do a decent nitrous install. Can't do that with a turbo.

 

Nitrous is a bit scary though. Not saying it has to be, but I think many people have that impression me included. What if some hose slips etc.

 

As opposed to a turbo installation on a high compression engine ? Trust me, there are plenty of things that can just as, if not more wrong with a turbo as a nitrous install.

I can understand that. I did my nitrous install with the help of CRH through PM's, but you can get someone like CRH or a local performance shop to do the install if that's what you're worried about. There aren't a whole lot of hoses to just "slip off". You pretty much have the fuel hose. So as long as that's done (can actually be done as well, if not better, than the stock set up). The rest of the hoses actually screw on so the threads will prevent them from slipping off... it's a good idea to check them every now and then to make sure it's all tight, but depending on your mounting position, that shouldnt be difficult to do.

 

Hehe, yeah I guess it's a bit of a myth. Did read a lot of what was probably Charles' threads and didn't look THAT advanced. But it's nitrous, that's scary enough for some of us Maybe I'll take a look at it when I want some extra juice though. Looks reasonably cheap and reversible.

 

Can you recommend a clutch and flywheel. My motor is being replaced and I will only have to pay for the parts. Thanks. Also, where do you recommend to buy.

 

A lot of people have the ACT units, but I have heard from a few people who have it that it is quite a bit stiffer than stock. I have the Centerforce clutch & SR Motorsports lightweight flywheel (which I think is a re-branded ACT unit), the Centerforce unit actually is lighter, & softer to engage. Racing Beat has a nice lightweight flywheel. Mazdaspeed has a good unit as well.
