Inappropriate Behavior
The above described product is based on my work product. Dan Harrison DOES NOT have my permission to use my work product in his device. I have told him so in conversations and in writing. If you buy from him, please know that he is not an honest person.
In addition, I tried to use his Apex chip to do some car communication. It was so buggy that I had to abandon the effort at a loss of over $300 in custom printed circuit boards. I returned his useless Apex chips and asked for a refund. He has yet to send back my money so please beware buying from him.
He also had to overnight two PCMs to me that he had BRICKED with his device. I fixed them and sent them back to him (at no charge). Using my stuff without my permission is how he thanks me.
These are my personal experiences with him and have led me to post the following challenge - https://www.rx8club.com/series-i-aftermarket-performance-modifications-23/%241000-scan-tool-challenge-138019/ I can not think of a better way to spend $1000 as it should result in a better scan tool product for everyone.
I think Dan had a good idea and I would like to see it done correctly by reputable people.

Lies and more lies

Please do not lie to the forum members. You contacted me and asked for help, you pledged, in email but not a contract I know, that you would not produce re-flashing hardware and you hid your development from me. You stated your interest was in finding a solution for Pettit Racing and ask me to build the hardware. Let get the facts straight.

For what it's worth. I have a Harrison Canscanner. The software has some nice features and Don has been helpful. But the software is unstable, crashes often and sometimes leaves a process in the background that uses up all the ECU cycles. I've stopped trying to get it to work.
One more general comment: Having better tools doesn't make you a tuner (or electrician, or carpenter) The Interceptor or the emanage, etc. are all good tools - in the hands of a tuner...

Wow! I feel so conflicted.
On one hand, it fun to watch two (or three) "professionals" bash the crap out of each other over the intellectual property rights to what will seemingly be another buggy re-release of "CANScan".
On the other hand, SPAMming up this thread pretty much sucks.
So, clickety-click I go!

I contacted Dan asking for help. Dan could not reflash a RX-8 PCM. I figured out how. Pettit needed a reflashing tool and I did not want to be in the reflash tool business. I tried using the Apex for a data logging tool (you need to see the data the PCM "sees" if you are going to tune the PCM) and it was unstable. I had to abandon using the Apex and returned the unused Apex chips. I asked for my money back (around $300) and Dan did not return my money. Dan was unable to get the programmer done for Pettit in a timely fashion. I told Pettit that I would do it if Dan missed one more "I'll have it done by" date. Dan missed another date and I did the programmer. After bricking two PCMs which I fixed, Dan finally got the programmer done. That is an honest time line.
Some more facts - Dan asked for the ability to reprogram PCMs so he could modify about four constants (rpm limit, top speed, fans,,). I said yes provided he build a reprogrammer for Pettit. Dan has now used my work product to produce a general programmer. He DOES NOT have permission to do this.
Now let's step back and look at this-
I did the work. If I choose to enable EFIDude to build a programmer, that is my business. EFIDude did build the programmer for Pettit and it works VERY WELL.
As for who is lying, why on earth would I enable someone like Dan to do a reflasher with my work product royalty free? Why should he make money on my coat tails. I was doing the guy a favor by letting him add some value to his product. In return, he rips me off. My mistake but I would rather trust people and be proven wrong then clam up and talk with no one.

I also have no desire to hyjack someone's thread. I'll start another for the H R&D discussion.
P.S.
I am not EFIDude nor am I Pettit.

I'm more of a rotary enthusiast than I am a tuner (like most on this thread). But I do want to ask... and even though after reading all that info you posted about the theory of operation... I want to ask more of a blunt question.. What do you suggest I have done to my 8 to maximize the eficiency of all these concepts you've listed above? (for example: from 'bolt-ons' to tuning) And with that question I want to limit the mods I do to where I can still drive it as a everyday vehicle and not end up bein driven in a trailer "strictly for racing" car. I have a stock 8 (2004) with a magnaflow catback exhaust. Any advise would be greatly appreciated. I'm pretty sure that by reading this you can probably guess I'm new at the rotary engine subject so please bear with me....

Only when you don't listen to those wiser than you!
With that said, the first page of this thread is awesome. Interesting turn it took there between the "pros" but nice to see it got pruned.
So Jeff, this thread, and the others I'm plowing my way through, are extremely educational, but to tie back to my opener, It'd be a lot less painful if there was an AP centric video (ideally with no male nudity -- although that might get my wife interested) I'd be all over it.
Once again, thanks for all the good information.
