Without looking and sounding like a "ricer"? I wouldnt mind a bigger exhaust and bigger exhaust pipes. I just can't see paying $400-$500 for sound... any ideas?

There are some free things you can do to make the car louder:

1. Removing the baffles and screens from the airbox will make things louder
(removing screens may make idle erratic)

2. Pounding out the honeycomb in the stock cat will also make things louder

There are great stickies available for both of these in the DIY section
Thanks very much to the helpful rx8club members who created them! =)

Yeah look on ebay you might find used exhaust. Or you can just take the muffler off.

removing the cat and installing a $150 catless midpipe will give you a more aggressive exhaust note without the cost.

see my comparisons here:

if you own a turboxs exhaust, swapping out the tips is actually a good idea.

here you go man. this IMO is the best bang for the buck as far as an exhaust is concerned.

Depending on what your opinion of a better sound is, two unmentioned objects are hearing aids and ear plugs. Each will change the perceived exhaust sound in different ways.

Buy a couple of P.A. speakers and play "good" exhaust sounds as you drive.

please please please do not put that muffler on an rx8. If you want a more agressive sound just put a catless midpipe on the car. You will have a check engine light, but you will have a pretty nice exhaust note and a slight power gain. I personally have the TurboXS trackpipe i bought from a forum member for about 150 and then had the muffler shop make me a 3 inch catback with a single chamber flowmaster muffler. That ran me about 200. Keep in mind with that setup my car is loud as hell, but sounds pretty nice. But just to answer your question i would just put a trackpipe on the car.

remove the screens in your airbox.

the mod is free and you will change your engine sound to a more aggressive one.

Removing the muffler loses friends, licenses, hearing, race track permits and the leaves off trees.....but no, no performance.
