So what would be the cheapest way to get better exhaust sound?

Without looking and sounding like a "ricer"? I wouldnt mind a bigger exhaust and bigger exhaust pipes. I just can't see paying $400-$500 for sound... any ideas?

RufusVonStorm 03-19-2008 03:35 PM

There are some free things you can do to make the car louder:

1. Removing the baffles and screens from the airbox will make things louder
(removing screens may make idle erratic)

2. Pounding out the honeycomb in the stock cat will also make things louder

There are great stickies available for both of these in the DIY section
Thanks very much to the helpful rx8club members who created them! =)

Yeah look on ebay you might find used exhaust. Or you can just take the muffler off.

laythor 03-19-2008 06:14 PM

spend the money if you want a larger exhaust

otherwise get in line at http://www.autobarn.net/exhausttips.html

mysql 03-19-2008 06:52 PM

removing the cat and installing a $150 catless midpipe will give you a more aggressive exhaust note without the cost.

see my comparisons here:

why not? lol!

mysql 03-19-2008 10:30 PM

if you own a turboxs exhaust, swapping out the tips is actually a good idea.

2nd that motion and add VFAD delete should help the sound just a tad at lower RPM's

souvlakipita 03-27-2008 03:18 AM

grab your drill and make a hole or three on your existing pipes

imput1234 03-27-2008 07:39 AM

1) get an intake <300
2) remove the exhaust

Bootleg 03-27-2008 09:16 AM

here you go man. this IMO is the best bang for the buck as far as an exhaust is concerned.

Depending on what your opinion of a better sound is, two unmentioned objects are hearing aids and ear plugs. Each will change the perceived exhaust sound in different ways. ;)

BMonkey 03-27-2008 06:22 PM

Buy a couple of P.A. speakers and play "good" exhaust sounds as you drive. :)

would this get me laughed off the forum?? :mdrmed:

do you even know how the stock exhaust looks?

NitrousHappy 03-28-2008 02:11 AM

please please please do not put that muffler on an rx8. If you want a more agressive sound just put a catless midpipe on the car. You will have a check engine light, but you will have a pretty nice exhaust note and a slight power gain. I personally have the TurboXS trackpipe i bought from a forum member for about 150 and then had the muffler shop make me a 3 inch catback with a single chamber flowmaster muffler. That ran me about 200. Keep in mind with that setup my car is loud as hell, but sounds pretty nice. But just to answer your question i would just put a trackpipe on the car.

kersh4w 03-28-2008 01:05 PM

remove the screens in your airbox.

the mod is free and you will change your engine sound to a more aggressive one.

judahslion7 03-28-2008 05:19 PM

my question is... does the car lose performance removing the muffler?

StealthTL 03-28-2008 05:22 PM

Removing the muffler loses friends, licenses, hearing, race track permits and the leaves off trees.....but no, no performance.

canaryrx8 03-28-2008 05:29 PM

cheapest way? drill bit and punch holes in your stocker :D:

(yikes! lmao)

judahslion7 03-28-2008 07:36 PM

I asked the question above because my muffler guy removed mine. WoW that is all i can say. He did the repipe of course but after two weeks I had an addtional resonator installed. I guess glass pack. It sounds really good and it has some more torque on the low end and of course the neighbors love me again (ear drums too) but it has a really nice sound. More low end Grumble down in the throat. Total cost 300 smackers. Which is money saved to a Cobb Tuner!

kevinD1226 03-30-2008 09:17 PM

u know for another 200 or so u could of gotten a real catback... if u didnt have the money then all u had to do is wait a little longer.. but as long as ur happy thats all that matters

judahslion7 03-31-2008 07:24 PM

I know what you are saying and that is very true. To be honest, I do not know if I am happy. I may go with a pre made exhaust still. I know it was alot cheaper then 700 to 900 so I thought it was worth a try. I still recomend it for someone that does not want to spend the money but just wants sound. The actual was 160 for the muffler removal and re pipe then 70 to install a resonator. I imagine it would be cheaper if you did it all at once.
I just ordered the Cobb tuner, so I will play with that for a bit.

DaveCM203 03-31-2008 09:07 PM

Spend the money to buy a nice car and you want to do some cheap shit like that. After you can hang out in frount of the WalMart with the riced out civics.
