So After 53,000 miles I have to say...

That the RX-8 Has been a fun car to say the least but it does have it's issues. I have been thru 2 Engines and 2 Transmissions 2 clutches and a Turbo Kit. But all in all it has always started and been a decent car. It now has a lot of noise and B.S stuff. Anyone with alot of miles like to comment on what they have been thru.

Unfortunately some of those problems might have been caused by the turbo or the tuning?? :dunno:

It would be awesome to hear from people with turbos and those without.

max5roadster 12-17-2005 02:34 PM

After 24,000 miles I have been on half as many engines, half as many transmissions, half as many clutches, and half as many turbo kits, but still enjoying it just as much!

Moonrover333 12-17-2005 03:28 PM

30k miles and on second engine due to bad metering pump, had to replace bolt that hold hood latch other than that i'm happy needs to be buffed though

Tigster 12-17-2005 04:23 PM

21K miles and replaced nothing.

ZoomZoomH 12-17-2005 06:35 PM

^same here, 23800 miles, been perfect :p:

Mr.Wankel 12-17-2005 06:43 PM

25,000+ and no issues at the moment. Don't have a turbo/supercharger. Definately not getting one now. Voids your warranty and apparently the Renesis engine can't handle it without heavy modification.

RX8FOREAL 12-17-2005 07:03 PM

48,000 miles with turbo and only had coil packs replaced about 1 year ago that I am sure was related to Nology plug wires. Still have stock clutch running fine. I plan on having Interceptor installed after New Years - have given up on E Manage.

mikeb 12-17-2005 08:10 PM

45k and had motor mounts replaced

cgrx 12-17-2005 08:13 PM

54k no problems........knocks on wood

Terrance26 12-17-2005 08:39 PM

33400 nothing except for a rattling when I take it into to high rpms. I've token it to the dealer but they can't figure what is wrong with it. I've been told that it was the cat and something might be loose in there from other people. Do you guys think that is right. It runs fine only until I run it pass 6000 rpm then you hear it right before it shifts, and if I keep running it in the high rpms I start to loose power and the car sputters a little bit. Any info would be appreciated. Thanks

guy321 12-17-2005 08:43 PM

34000ish, replaced shift forks and a dog ran into my car, but other than that all good.

MazdaManiac 12-18-2005 02:00 AM

33k miles (half of those boosted) and mine has been flawless.

adrian-1 12-18-2005 03:03 AM

30k miles (10k of them boosted with the Greddy turbo), no need for a mfg warranty.

Renesis can handle it and them some. A few bugs to work out, but enjoying the 10psi boost now.

Jaguar_MBA 12-18-2005 09:04 AM

23,000 miles and had to replace a bad fuel pump.

Ole Spiff 12-18-2005 11:12 AM

37,500 miles. Just had to replace front brake rotors and pads; plan on contacting Mazda NA about covering the cost since the pads had worn at an angle; 70% on front and 35% on back of pad. No way that was anything I did, the brake system had to be malfunctioning to wear a pad like that. Had a shorted Neutral Switch replaced under warranty 3 weeks ago.

My only performance mods so far are RB exhaust, REVi intake, and RB CAI. I love this car, it's been a joy to own and drive for 2 1/2 years.

Tamas 12-18-2005 11:22 AM

5500 miles in more than two years... :hahano:
No problems :D:

BLACKLIST 12-18-2005 11:43 AM

20,000 miles and not one problem. I was a little worried at first when I started reading up on rotaries and the rx-7 but I couldn't help myself after the test drive. I had to have this car. Never looked back since... :wiggle:

You need to drive more and post less :)

52,000 runs great, no problems in almost two years.

dgerald 12-18-2005 12:20 PM

Almost 23,000 miles, turbo'd for the the last 8000. Alot more rattles in the cockpit, had to replace the coilpacks, and after installing the Interceptor EMS I have serious cold start problems now.
Other than that, she still drives great.

Celronx 12-19-2005 08:10 AM

38k here. Just some rattles in the interior panels...but only when it's really cold outside. Love'n every drive.

dmp 12-19-2005 08:50 AM

15,000 miles and the damn steering wheel airbag cover sounds like a cricket on crack cocaine...again....after it was 'fixed'... :(

Yeah I have this problem too. I have 2 steering columb rattles...not sure if they are related but otherwise this car is solid. Now that the weather is cold, the crickets are mating in there. :cwm27:

BoosTED 12-19-2005 09:26 AM

13,900 only had to have a Cat replaced the first week I had it. Bought it new replaced cat at 250 miles, it caused a CEL and thought it best to replace it.

Almost forgot the door sill plate RX-8 logo was pulling up on the passenger side so I had them chip in on upgrading to the aluminum sill plates. :)

GiN 12-19-2005 09:33 AM

45,000 miles - been thru 2 accidents (no its not silver) and havent had anything replaced other than body panels. It still runs like a champ.

If i push down just past the cover of the airbag, on the console, AND pull out slightly on the air bag cover, the crickets die. I'm tempted to wedge a piece of foam in that gap - but knowing what foam did to the space shuttle, I'm worried what it might do to my head if the air bag deploys. :(

Cross-F8er 12-19-2005 03:15 PM

20,000 miles automatic, no engine mods.

I got a new transmission and I had to tighten some loose screws on the manifold cuz my car was making some annoying noises on first gear.

mazdaspeed body kit started falling apart. the dealer put it on too. the sides skirts seem to have a hard time staying flushed with the body. the back skirt is kinda loose too.

That's what you get for trying to make your auto look fast.. ha ha ha j/k mate :)

19k on the clock, lots of little stuff, nothign major, knock on wood.

Cross-F8er 12-19-2005 05:43 PM

oh yea, the dealer said the mazdaspeed body kit was not made that well and a lot of people are having problems with the side skirts. mazda said they are investigating on it and will try to fix the problem with the kit.

i also found out that the rear skirt is held up with double sided tape, which seems kinda ghetto, but that's what mazda said to use, until they find a solution.

r0tor 12-19-2005 06:34 PM

its not the design of the sideskirts - its the incredibaly vague description by mazda on where to mount them thats the problem....

You're right but to do that, I have to find a new job first :)

The build quality of the MS body kit is FAR superior to any other kit on the market both in fit and finish.
It is actually of superior quality to the factory bumpers.

The sideskirts fit perfectly and are nearly indestructable. The double sided tape is to make them vibration proof so that you don't have rattles or squeaks. They are actually mounted with a half dozen OEM body clips, 4 or 5 plastic press fasteners and 3 or 4 bolt-head machine screws set to speed nuts on the factory fender and quarter panel.
I've hit mine on speed bumps really hard several times and there was no movement, cracks or delamination. Try that with a fiberglass kit.

The issue, as noted, is that the instructions are not designed for the un-informed. They have nearly no "instruction" in them at all - just templates for drilling the mounting holes. If you are experienced with this type of work, it is an extremely easy install.

ZoomZoomH 12-19-2005 09:11 PM

yea i have to agree, Mazdaspeed body kit parts are very well made, just need to have some skill/experience to decipher the vague instructions and install them properly

ranger4277 12-19-2005 10:05 PM

I didn't think they were vague at all... :dunno:

But the quality and material is excellent. Worth every penny.

rotary9k 12-20-2005 12:10 AM

25k miles and all I have to complain is my driver side door rattles. I'd say overall I'm pretty satisfied :yesnod:

army_rx8 12-20-2005 12:15 AM

46,147 miles, had the evap system replaced ,mostly due to the dealership misdiagnosing the problem and not fixing it fo r6 months until it effected teh rest of the evap system. other than tha tthe car is runnign great. only issues are things that i've had installed and teh installers bungled it. (clutch assembly)...btu nothign on the cars end of things :)

do anybody have any knowledge on what I wrote about above. Thanks

Have you checked the air filter?

there is a problem with locating the templates which effects the height of where all of the holes need to be drilled... you get 1 chance to drill and if your off by 1/8" you get a nice seperation between the body and sideskirt

TALAN7 12-20-2005 12:17 PM

48k miles, 2 water pumps, 1 ac condenser, a few rattles, rough idling but my dealer keeps saying it's ok. So far, a decent car though I'm not so impressed by it. I'll concede that its a sports car so it requires more maintenance but I don't think the quality anywhere near approaches Toyota or Honda. My last Buick to me was more reliable. May have looked like polyester but polyester holds up over time. The 8 may look like silk inside, but rattles are there just the same.

Hornet 12-20-2005 06:16 PM

40,000+ miles, still original engine, transmission, and clutch!

EyeBall Fixer...(o)(x) 12-20-2005 07:49 PM

7K on my clock..
Mazda replaced my front brakes due to squeal,
replaced broken lid on center console,
replaced front headlights because of inside film..

Engine, Tranny and rear-end are good so far..

automaton 12-20-2005 08:12 PM

20,000 miles and no mechanical issues at all.

Yes, I have crickets in my steering wheel, too.

PJ Yukiyu 12-22-2005 05:18 PM

28k on mine and already 3 transmitions. Everything else is perfect.

lure3o1 12-23-2005 02:19 AM

21000 miles and car flooded once and had the battery replaced 2 times. and had to replace the rear right tail light cause was not seal properly. otherwise everything else is great.

crimson-rain 12-23-2005 08:30 AM

37K miles driving in Washington DC/VA traffic everday. Borla catback installed for most ot that time. I have had no real issues. Need to get an intake though.

RA-Eight 12-23-2005 09:39 AM

~25K miles, no major issues. Replaced headlights because lens were cloudy, brake pads, an interior trim piece on center console, and shift knob. Plan on driving'er into the ground, hopefully that's 100K+ miles.
