Can someone tell me what in your opinion is the best short shifter for our RX8's. How much is it and where can I get it. Is it hard to install? I'm knew to this car and installing parts. Thanks guys!

the ONLY one you need is the AFE SS, from axialflow.com...TRUST me, you WILL love it, real easy to install, 20 minutes at the MOST for the unexperienced

there arent a whole lot of choices

- Axial Flow Engineering SS. This is by far THE most popular (for good reasons)
- Mazdaspeed: rarely talked about, more expensive then AFE and the throws are not as short
- Hymee SS: Sold in Australia but is the same as the AFE

hell yeah the AFE is one of the best mods EVER, once you drive with it you wont wanna drive without it...it changes the feel of the car, adds to the "sport"s part of the car

now THAT is a much tougher question to answer because it all comes down to what do YOU want out of your car.

the only reason to go with the MS over the AFE is if the AFE didnt work well in your car. There are minor manufacturing differences in tranny etc that can make a small number of RX-8s incompatible with the very well made AFE.

For instance in my own car when installed 5th and 6th gears were no longer tight against the right "wall" but a hair off. this made smooth shifts from 4th to 5th highly improbable and 5th to 6th an exercise in patience. I literally could not go straight in, i had to come out of 5th then find 6th.

Its not the fault of the AFE just that because of its precise nature it doesnt quite cover the very outlying ends of the spectrum. Hell Mazda has the stock shifters and "towers" numbered to match them on the assembly line so the stock one is correct. I believe this may be why the MS one is not so short.

I could have probably made some changes in the tower like ovalizing the locating pin holes to get it just right but at the time selling it made more sense. I really regretted taking it out the first time i got back in it with the stock shifter.
