Rotary Performance High-Cat Pipe v.s. Rotary Performance MidPipe

Hey guys,

As you know I am looking to picking either the Rotary Performance Midpipe or the Rotary Performance High-Cat Pipe. Now, I live in California, so the Smog/Emissions/CARB stuff is hitting hard on people in California.

I really LOVE the way that the Rotary Performance Midpipe gives you that agressive loudness of the Rotary engine. Here is an example of flyboi1121's RX-8 with the RP Midpipe and B&B exhaust. http://home.comcast.net/~chrismarko1...s_minimeet.wmv

That is what I want. I know that midpipes are illegal in California so I was looking at the High-Cat Pipe by Racing Performance. Will the High-Cat Pipe "muffle" the sound compared to just the midpipe? Like will there be a big different in loudness between the High-Cat Pipe and the Midpipe. If there is no difference at all, then I will be safe and go with the High-Cat Pipe, but if I do get the straight through midpipe, I need to know the following.

If I do get pulled over by a cop, how will he know that I have modified my cat without being able to see under the car? How would he be able to ticket me? Also, when I do go in for smog/emission tests, I am able to just take off the midpipe and put the stock cat-pipe back on correct and it won't affect anything?

I know it would probably be a lot of working putting the stock-cat on and off everytime I'll need to get smog/emissions, but I want the sound that the video shows.

If you get the high flow cat he will here it.

You have to have a CAT. Without a CAT he will hear the loud noise, not to mention he probably can smell it, as the RX 8 runs too rich.

So, will having a cat "muffle" the sound that the pipe will produce compared to just the straight through midpipe? Will the high flow cat pipe not be as loud as just a straight through pipe?

Both pipes will give me a ~9HP gain so I am not worried about the performance, I just really like the loudness that the RP straight midpipe gives off, yet if the high-flow cat pipe doesn't muffle the sound at all, and will give off the same loudness as the RP midpipe, then I will spend the extra money to buy the RP High-Flow Cat in order to stay legal in smog/emissions for CA and have a Cat.

You get that midpipe and the GReddy exhaust like you were saying, you won't be able to hear yourself think. They are loud alone, combined you could wake the dead.

Doesn't look like I will be getting that midpipe. My neighbore said that if a cop pulls me over for no cat, they will take my car away and it's considered a felony.

I think I am going to stick with the high-cat pipe, and then from there, see which cat-back system will go good with the pipe.

What do you guys think? http://www.rx7.com/RPGReddyRX8exhaus...ovieclips.html That's clips with Greddy SP2 exhaust and their RP pipe, I don't know if it's their high-cat pipe or their midpipe, but that is perfect sound/loudness/what I want IMHO. It is probably the midpipe though, so how much do you think the high-cat pipe will take away from that?

awww... u going with the cat huh :D the first time i put my midpipe on... it was just way too loud... even driving at 2k rpm.. lolz but after 500 miles, it really mellow'd down a lot and sounds very nice now... not loud enough to get pulled over i believe unless u floor it and yes it does smell a lil since the car runs rich but that shouldn't be a problem unless u come to a stop sign or a red light with the cop right behind you right after u floored it, redlining it all over the place but if that happened.... he's probably pulling you over for speeding/careless driving rather than a loud car :D haha and who knows... maybe when he's walking over to ur car to give you a ticket, he'll pass out from the smell and u can make your loud get-away

I have the Greddy exhaust with the B&B midpipe and I LOVE the way it sounds. It's loud and you can hear it from inside but it's not obnoxious and you can definitely hear yourself think and even hold conversations! Yes, you can smell the fuel but it's not terrible and the growl is well worth it IMO. I think it's even a tad bit faster. :D

I just installed the SP2 this weekend and the sound is awesome... and loud. I can't imagine how painful it would be though with a straight pipe, so it's good you're not thinking about that anymore. I too am considering the RP high flow "supercat", but if I do I'm going have a resonator installed on it. The factory cat is muffling a lot of the raspy buzz that rotaries are known for- a little is nice, but if the supercat is anything like the midpipe in sound, it might be too much when combined with the Greddy exhaust.
