Smile Resonated Vs. Unresonated

Do you think I should put a resonated midpipe or unresonated midpipe with stock exhaust? I will be going turbo in the future I just wanted to change out midpipe for now.

IMO, it sounds a little raspy without an aftermarket exhaust.

Do you have any clips or is this personal experience? I can only find sound clip with supercat and stock catback. The only reason I was considering non resonated is b/c if it was too loud I can always add a straight through muffler in place.

Resonated.

I have a resonated midpipe with an aftermarket exhaust and it is quite loud. Unresonated might be unbearable. I've seen a video of an unresonated midpipe with aftermarket catback, and it was insanely loud.

I strongly disagree.

Stock exhaust with a catless midpipe sounds louder than stock, and has more of a growl, but it is not raspy at all.

Borla exhaust and catless midpipe is rapsy as hell. If you bought four civics, removed their exhausts and strapped them to the back of your rx-8, that is what you'd sound like.

The video's don't always capture the true quality of the sound, but you can compare for yourself:

As far as resonated or not, mine is resonated. I've never tried it the other way, so I can't comment.

Thanks that's what I was looking for. The power gains without the ricey sounds.

my butt dyno couldn't feel any improvement with a catless midpipe when NA. The car is still slow.

The catless midpipe will help you a lot when you go turbo, so I guess buying it as an investment for later improvement is a good thing, but don't expect much now.

Well, I've heard it first hand and I think it sounds like *** with the stock exhaust. To each his own I guess.

Perhaps the car you heard had a K&N intake or something else that increased the sound level.

It's not a matter of opinion, my car with stock exhaust and catless midpipe had no rasp at all. None.

I always go resonated. In fact I installed a resonator into my supercat. Anything to smooth out the exhaust note and keep it from being raspy is a good thing in my book.

i'm planning on getting a b&b midpipe soon in order to just get rid of the catalytic...
i don't care about the pretty sounds of aftermarket exhausts... they don't make any gains anyways! i feel like the cat shouldn't be on the car... period!

Nope. Stock everything except for springs. I just noticed theres one major difference in our argument. I'm talking about a hi-flow cat midpipe w/o resonator and you're talking about just a straight pipe. Perhaps the rasp is eliminated with a straight pipe.

Maybe the rasp goes away after it's broken in, but right now, it's raspy as hell and sounds like **** at mid-to-high RPM's.

heh. Could be...

When I originally put on the midpipe, the car was NA and had the borla. It was so raspy and loud that the very same day I went to my storage and pulled the stock exhaust out. I could NOT stand it.

Unresonated it also can sound raspy WITH an aftermarket exhaust. For example there is a difference between the unresonated sound on the Greddy vs. the Borla. The Greddy is louder and not so raspy while the Borla is more raspy and less loud.

I heard the HKS on a NA car with catless and it wasn't nearly as bad as the borla.

I ordered the RP midpipe non resonated. If it's to raspy I will add a Borla XR-1 straight thru muffler to quiet down.
