what are typical hp gains for porting? this is something im thinking about doing prior to any fi now...

Sounds like less important is porting, with more emphasis on polishing.

There is still porting involved. Porting is far more inclusive than just enlargening ports though. There is alot of material that needs to be removed and possibly added to in some spots. This is all done behind the actual port window though.

20-30% with a good ecu they say...the website is posting #'s that were done on stock ecu...

typical gains do not apply to the renesis because it reacts differently to porting than previous N/A rotary engines. Previous engines, you could get from 10-150more HP with porting, depending on the extremeness of the port job.

i understand what porting is....what is meant by port and polish though? my understanding of polish is they fine tune the engine to be able to take more abuse by "polishing" it? in effect allowing one to have a higher boost on their turbo without blowing a seal?


am i on the right track? and what is the cost difference between just porting and a port and polish? or are they one in the same?

I for one agree with RG on this one....there is no spoon.

Seriously though, I think that Mazda did a pretty good job with the port size for a flexible streetable car. And thats the key, sure making the ports bigger fir certain applications makes alot of sense, but for the vast majority of us who want a after street car that can pull some track time, smoothing out the ports and working on the velocity of the air is going to take us farther. This is also less risky, in that the less material you remove, the less of a chance that you weaken a part that could cause a failure or a leak.
I'm planning on slowly polishing and cleaning up the intake side which I can do without taking out the engine so that when I decide to actually pull the engine, I have less work to do.

It seems to me that the biggest problem with our car that is bottling up excess power is gong to be emissions related design issues, most notably, the cat life. Overall Mazda squeezed about as much out of the engine as they could while living inside the cat requirements. It appears the ECU is fighting back against the lean effect of the extra airflow with more fuel, again, to save the cat life by lowering the exahust temps.

You can make anything meet emissions, just how you do it is the different story.

He's not talking about passing emissions testing with porting. He's talking about how Mazda left power out of the engine in order to meet cat life requirements for emissions reasons. He's basically saying that we can get more power out of the engine with tuning but cat life will suffer.

This may be alittle off topic, but is anyone familure with porting the 1.6L Miata? I'm installing a ported head and port matched intake manifold on my friends Miata next week and I was just wondering how much difference it was going to make. The porting doens't look too agressive.


I had my 12a street ported and I couldn't have been happier with it. The guy who did the work claimed 30 hp and I almost believed him becasue the performance gain in my butt dyno was unreal.

Most porting styles shouldn't. Overly large bridgeports where the bridge has been made too thin may see long term issues but for the most part anything you are doing for street use will be fine.

I'm I missing something, forgive me since I did not read (don't have the time yet) their complete website...but the power difference seemed to be closer to 15-20HP and gaining that @ $2300 seems overpriced.

Again, keep in mind that I know little about porting and I'm a rotary newbie...but per the dyno's It looked like only a 15-20 HP increase which for that price seems unimpressive.

The Greddy Turbo cost about 1g more but gives you 3 times the power.

Help me understand guys...what am I missing here?

This may seem very strange and backwards but take the time to read everything on this website. It is very eye opening. Pay particular attention to articles 16 and up. Don't worry that this is a motorcycle based site. The info is relevant to all piston engines.

Wow! That was a great article rotarygod. It seems to make so much sense. I almost don't want to put the head on my friend’s car now. I guess the only way to make more hp with conventional porting would be to port the exhaust ports only. That way the escaping gas will have an easier path to flow, thus creating more suction during valve overlap to pull in the intake charge.

I have had a few engines built for motorcycle racing.

The best results were always a little clean up and alot of polish.

.....which is why I'm a little surprised no-one has commented on my earier post about Extrude-Hone. It would be cheap to have the lower inlet manifold done, for starters......

does anyone know where i could get ahold of a street port template or race port template? and if so how much? and another thing are there any place in Nc that does this kinda work? and how much they charge? my apex seals took a **** on me last week and the dealership said they couldnt and wouldnt replace the engine cus of a mom n pop shop replacing all the seals besides apex, iv been looking into porting for awhile now and its a perfect time to do it, anyone know of any really good apex seals that r better then oem? and what kinda port should i go with if daily driven and plan on boosting latter????
