Radiator Fan Upgrades?

Hi All,

My stock radiator fans are starting to go on me, and while they still function I want to get them replaced soon before they go completely out. Both fans spin when on, but don't spin as fast as they used to in fast mode. Also the driver's side fan doesn't spin freely anymore while the passenger side one seems to be somewhat okay.

I tried searching the forums for any threads that had aftermarket cooling fans, but only found one (Mizu aluminum shroud sp?) that had "so so" reviews.

Initially, I was thinking to just replace it with a new OEM (possibly from an 09), but considering the price for them new, I thought maybe this is a good opportunity to upgrade them if possible? I used a Flex-a-lite dual 12" puller fan (2500CFM) as an upgrade in previous cars that worked great, but thought I'd ask the community for feedback before I go out and order a cooling fan replacement. I'm not sure how much CFM the OEM fans flow.

Here's a link to their website:

My car is a 04 Grand Touring 6spd Manual, with an AEM CAI and battery relocation so the radiator and fan area are exposed. Any suggestions, comments or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance,

There's a thread on this site about changing from series 1 to series 2 fans. Give search a try. :)

My #1 fan is starting to go... Not sure which way to go yet

I always try to search before I post and find what I need most of the time (hence my post count). However for this particular topic I can only find discussions about it (at best) along with a ton of irrelevant threads.

Thanks for the link DarkBrew, excellent resource online. After viewing it I see the motors can be disassembled from the shroud which is pretty cool. A quick look on www.onlinemazdaparts.com show different prices for an 04 vs 09 but no part numbers... :( But from the website it looks like the 09s have the same motors in both spots where as the early models have different ones?

Pricing is much cheaper than replacing the entire thing or going with a flex-a-lite. Are you considering other options for replacing your cooling fans?

On of the fan discussions mentions part numbers. For my 04 the fan motor is $159 but 09 is $59. Hence the discussion about replacing the whole shroud with the new 09 parts.

I'm looking at the fan motor and wiring differences.

Ah... Good thread... I remember reading up on it a while back before Ash got into the discussion of the fans. I'm real curious to see what the CFM ratings are for the fans... I also wonder if it's better to just bypass the low/high speed settings and just have it full on or completely off.

On the way to work this morning the day was already starting pretty warm, and turned on the A/C. I had to run back into the house to grab something but heard the fan relay clicking every 6-10 sec. I popped the hood, and noticed that the fans were only turning on for that 6-10 sec and then shutting down. It would repeat that continuously. Seems pretty awkward behavior for cooling the condenser. Most A/C units I've seen just turn on and stay on. Definitely explains why my A/C is never as cold when I'm not on the freeway. Weird stuff.

I think there's a ton of good info on that thread you've linked... I think it'd be best served for all to bring it there and consider this one a redirect for anyone who finds this thread from searching. https://www.rx8club.com/showthread.p...n+motor&page=9

Thanks for the link and info DarkBrew! If you wouldn't mind, I'd like to know what route you decide to go with your cooling fan replacement when you get there.

Now it says that it has 1250 cfm. Now i know it requires 2500 to 3000 cfm. My question is are each fan 1250 cfm and equates to 2500 or is the total both fan combine 1250 cfm?
