Question for Cobb users

I have been on this site long enough to know that the Cobb Ap is the bees' knees, but my question is without the MazdaManiac tune, is it really worth the money? Is the performance increases without the MM tune worth the $400?

My car has a K&N drop in filter and BHR ignition and Exoticspeed R1-T exhaust. Without boosting the car, the only "power-adder" I can see left is the Cobb tuner.

Anyone have any input?

Thanks for your time!

Brian

1) Why would you get it without the Calibration Service?
2) Where would you get it without the Calibration Service?

^what he said

BJP 04-18-2011 08:43 PM

most of the ones on the For sale section do not come with the MM calibrations

RX8Soldier 04-18-2011 08:51 PM

pretty pointless to get, unless you want it just for monitoring your engine. Won't get many (IF any) gains without a proper tune

NONE of the used AccessPORTs sold ANYWHERE come with MazdaManiac calibrations.

Legally, no.

The calibrations belong to me and are licensed to the original subscriber only.

Really?

Yep. Really.

The calibrations are not a "copy". Nor are they "works for hire".

You are not purchasing the calibration - you are licensing it for single use.

MazdaManiac is right. Being a side photographer I'm well versed on copyright law and licensing, and he is definitly correct.

MazdaManiac 04-19-2011 09:21 AM

I mean, don't get me wrong. I realize that people are going to ignore the law in the matter and steal the stuff. It happens all the time.
And, even though a calibration from one car wont work on another, people seem to be very tolerant of a car that runs like crap just as long as they are getting something for free.

That's interesting, so would we have to "divorce" the AP from our car before selling it? Sucks for FI cars that don't even run without calibration.
Obviously, in practice, it won't work that way. I'm in California, so in principal I can't even drive my car right now without a CARB EO# for the tune. By definition, you're dealing with outlaws. :)

Hahahahahahahha!!!!!!!

seen a few guys who've sold just the kit or a whole FI car with the AP and they added in the cost of the turning service.

I'll be expecting that check in the mail any day now...

Jedi54 04-19-2011 11:56 AM

umm... "it's in the mail...." :uhh:

laythor 04-19-2011 01:10 PM

let me rephrase, i've seen guys who have offered to include the price of the tuning service if someone bought their FI kit or car.

yeah that was me that offered that, but nobody thought paying 5k for a kit that included all that was cheep enough for their super smart turbo on a budget project.

most of them gave up or are now way past 5k in their builds. I laugh.

Wow quite a thread-jack ladies .... but well worth it ... let the lulz ensue ...

If I may however get more or less back to the OP's question.

The MM service IMO is well worth it ...

+1 with RX8Soldier's comment ... however I defiantly think it's worth the 400 to monitor your car's vitals.
The Cobb AP is hands down the best mod I've purchased for the RX8.

EDIT:
Oh and I see you have the BHR Coil system ... then why not get the MM tune with the dwell settings and maximize the coils potential.
Some say it will provide a hp improvement.

Completely right, 400 is cheap to be able to monitor and change so many vital things going on with our car. Too bad so many people don't agree. I wince every time someone starts and even finish a FI project and all you see in the pics are a oil temp, water temp, oil pressure, and cheap AFR gauge.

Not everyone thinks being able to see what's going on is important, but at least they make great "Parts for Sale" threads :smoker:
