So guys Im new to this forum, I've only owned my Rx-8 a short while but am in love with the car its a 2004" high power model" also known as the touring model 6 speed. Dont flame this post because its to help everyone out who wants to know about perfromance chips and so i decided to take a hit on it and actually test them out for all of our benefits. So of course the first thing I did when getting the car was look at mods/performance enhancements that are affordable. My only experience with mods come from an integra I owned where I completely switched out the computer for an aftermarket computer and Ram Aired it. Since then Ive been driving a huge *** truck. Well I decided it was time to move a little faster and give up getting 12-17 MPG. So everyone seems to ask do these so called performance chips work, I did a lot of research on them and most of them do indeed seem to be nothing but a simple resistor. There are one that claim to be adjustable and once that gurantee a certain amount of power or torque or an certain increase in mpg. Well I figured since I was unable to actually locate one solitary single F*cking legit thread on the entire internet of someone who tested one of these chips I decided to just roll the dice and if it sucked then no harm no foul just remove the chip if it worked yeay me. Well heres what my experience has been. I purchased my chip from SLR motorsports... yeah i was sketchy how can you promise every single car a 50 HP boost and torque and mpg but meh 75 dollars is easy come easy go...just decided not to eat as much fast food that month i bought it =-P well the install was so ******* easy a 13 yr old could do it. Simply tap into your air intakes wire harness. there is no cutting no scraping just the simple quick connect which tap the chips wires and your existing wire harness just enough with the metal blade to link them together. The instructions are dummy proof which is good for me because when it comes to rotary engines and wiring diagrams I might as well be a ******* retard. No this chip will not void a warranty simply bc once you remove the chip there is no evidence it was there except for a tiny 'niche' in the wire of your harness which isnt noticeable to anyone who isnt looking for it. The instructions claim your check engine light may come on for up to 2 weeks as your computer adjusts to the chip. We all know these chips simply "fool the car into thinking the air is much colder than it is". So 15 minutes to tap into the harness reconnect battery and start car. The traction control light was on...hmmm not check engine .. fluke?? I restarted car still on .. oh well ill give it a go. Take the car out for a 20 minute drive light stays on no perfrmance difference except Idle does seem to be smoother. Maybe Im fooling myself.. so I take car home disconnect chip ride around light is back to being off. Come home park reinstall chip, light is on again but yes the idle is smoother. I drive down the interstae to wallmart and decide maybe if i give the chip some time like the instructions say the light will go off. I go about my shopping come out 45 minutes later start car light is off engine is completelyyyyyyyyyyyyy silent and not even the lightest vibration in the idle..could it be could this chip maybe do something for us as Rx-8 owners?? So pull out onto the local strip immediately i can detect better throttle response/power from 1k rpm- the 4 4k rpm. B4 the chip If i floored the car I could always tell the low end power sucked on the car pretty much to be honest but once i hit 4.5k and up it was amazing. Anyway.. the throttle response was definitely better smooth and powerful all the way from 1k-9k it was the same it didnt climb didnt change it was all go. I can always chirp my tires hitting third gear but with this chip my tires give a definite peel out more than a bark but not quite enough to smoke them definitely a screech that turns peoples heads now. I havent dyno'd the car before and after so I cant give an accurate or honest guesstimation on HP or Torque but to me it is noticeable I even had a freind who drove the car before and after say he could tell a difference. AS for gas mileage.. this is all up for debate.. obviously you cant increase the airflow without a supercahrger or turbo and expect your car to just suck in more air + more gas and get better MPG. So pretty much city driving ..my mpg has sunk through the floor noticeably ..wayyy noticeably I never did get an accurate reading but the car is rated at 16 mpg I would say it is about 12 where my truck is if im not petting it...driving it like a sports car but not like a bat out of hell. On the HWY however there is an increase in gas mileage I was getting about 20-21 mpg on the hwy more on the 21 side due to the hills in my are but if i was completely flat 22 was achievable with no stopping or speeding up. I tested the chip today on the hwy for the first time with exact amounts of fuel at exact speeds not stopping no breaking no speeding up. At 85 mph (our speed limit here is 75 so ...) my MPG were at 24.963... refilled on the turn around reset trip and went back home at 70 mph my gas mileage was 25.323. I got these by completelyyyyyyy topping off tank to the brim and measuring how much fuel i put in at the gas station directly off the interstate. Of course weather conditions do affect this as cars run richer with colder weather this trip fluctuated from 31 degrees to 40. So my personal experience tells me yes this specific chip on MY car does imprive perfromance, does improve torque- gas mileage is going to be a toss up on are you driving city or are you driving HWY. I will gladly do any tests on the chips that you guys request for validation (as long as Im not spending money) to do them such as roundtrip mileage, quarter mile times etc. It would be nice if someone else could validate this post with their own ecperience with this particular chip but from my experience this chip did affect my car some posative some negative all depends on your view. I tried contacting them twice just to test and see if they would respond and neither time did I get any response at all.
