Looks like a SEMA booth display possibly.

Anyone check the K & N website yet?

Apparently K&N has heard the criticism about how their filter blocks all the incoming cold air. too bad the filter element area is extremely small. It probably lost airflow.

man you guys are fast!

ok, this was a SNEAK PEEK of an upcoming intake for our 8's. (provided to me by a vendor). as soon as i know pricing and availability by k&n i can redirect.

btw, i have no affiliation with either k&n or the vendor.

so, over the typhoon, will this increase the air flow rotarygod?

I doubt it, but why would they be changing it?

The problem they had wasn't lack of airflow through the filter. Their filter was huge and could easily flow enough. The issue was that it couldn't get cold air. Now, this new filter has a much smaller flow area but it can take in cold air from the stock inlet opening. It's kind of like they are willing to make one sacrifice for another. Why not just do the whole thing properly like Racing Beat? FWIW: Racing Beat will use a K&N filter element in theirs. Their kit only gets air from the outside rather than using a shield. It has plenty of area inside the intake box to get it to the filter and the filter is large enough to not be a restriction. K&N isn't doing their homework for this car very well.

btw just a note (I love the S&B and intense performance filters), the S&B filters tend to exaggerate the whistle sound from the TB's...so if that really annoys you, they may not be the filter for you.

It might not whistle on the 8 at all...but damn does the mazda 6 TB plate hit just the right frequency at 3k rpm..

Although it's difficult to determine exact scale from a photo that's a pretty big filter housing, about 7 or 8 inches in diameter judging from its relative size compared to the cone filter below it. That would put the opening at 6 or so inches. Also the tube appears to be bigger, both slightly longer and larger in diameter than the previous K&N. I would like to see what's inside of the filter housing. If there is a venturi instead of a flat plate with a hole in the center flow should easily exceed the old K&N. I figure that if you unrolled the inverted cone it would be about 33% larger than the stock element. While that is smaller than the previous K&N filter it is better positioned.

K&N screwed up the first time around but that's no reason to assume that this filter will be equally flawed. This design seems better thought out than the previous incarnation, I hope they have used the additional development time to good effect.

From everything I've read, resonance in the intake and exhaust is very important to where and how much power is made in the Renesis. By removing the stock air box, you're removing the tuning chamber for that resonance, and thereby disrupting airflow to the engine. I noticed that Racing Beat retained an airbox in their prototype design. Just a thought.

If K&N is working on a new intake design then it kind of shows that they have been listening to their customers and are trying to remedy the situation. If you look at this other photo of the prototype you can see that they added a velocity stack and a mesh screen to help stabilize the airflow.

So I say hold off on the flame fest. Well at least until the product is released and a few people have actually had a chance to try it.

If they are coming out with a proper design then that is fine. I'm still going to flame them for releasing an inferior design, making money off of it, and then not expecting the people that already have them to just buy new ones rather than offering them an upgrade option. Even after all this is taken care of, it still doesn't mean that their intake will really be of any performance benefit. Improving an area that doesn't need much help in the first place isn't a very effective way of getting good gains. They might get something out of it but don't expect any miracles.

All I'm asking is that people reserve judgement until someone has actually tried a product. Your attitude is very hostile towards vendors and in return it makes them very hesitant to make new products for our cars. I've spoken to several vendors about making performance parts for our cars (harness bars, 4-point roll bars, blade type anti-sway bars, wide throttle pedals, etc...) and in each case they decided not to pursue it because of the attitude on this forum. The general perception that they got after skimming through the forum is that RX-8 owners are a bunch of whiny posers who are only interested in trendy items versus functional performance items. So they don't see any reason to invest the time and/or money into developing parts for our car.
