need some advice on cold air intakes please

ok im new to modifing cars and i haved my rx8 for about 1.5 years now and i want to give some more power. sense i have not done this im not sure what are good brands to go with. i have read some of the post about problems ppl have had.

so my question is i want a cold air intake that will give it a nice deep sound. also one that wont choke at higher rps and stall . also one that wont have problems with differnet wether patterns (i live in Rhode island were weather can be very cold or warm) (also one that i wont have to cut anything up in my car to make the cold air intake to fit)

i was looking online at mazdaspeed store and saw a few

-AEM COLD AIR INDUCTION SYSTEM
-K&N TYPHOON AIR INTAKE SYSTEM
-WEAPON R DRAGON INTAKE SYSTEM
-WEAPON R SECRET WEAPON INTAKE

also i on a few forms ppl stated something about a cold air intake from
mazdaspeed do they themselfs make a cold air intake or was i just miss reading something?

Dude, there are thousands of threads on this. All of them are pretty much gonna sound the same.
MasdaSpeed does make an intake... if you look around there are a couple other things you can do to get the same results that don't cost a couple hundred dollars.

long story short .on the rx8 it depends on how much noise you want to hear to think your going faster.there are no real world gains on a stock engine with just the intake.lotta claims and a lot more dissapointments.

Ok, if you HAVE TO get an intake, stick with the AEM, MazdaSpeed, or the K&N (version 2).
Other than spending a couple hundred dollars, you're not going to gain much but sound.
Personally I would just stick a cone filter in the stock box, or put in a drop-in K&N filter.
I stuck a cone filter in mine.

None of them would "choke" your car. You were probably reading a thread with someone that had the Greddy turbo.

Out of those, the Racing Beat REVi followed by the Mazdaspeed (same as AEM) are probably the most "stable". Both retain at least one of the screens that straighten airflow over the MAF and thus keep the car stable at idle. They are also shielded from the heat of the engine bay, helping to prevent heat soak.

Good choices but listen to what everyone else is saying. All you will gain is a sound that you will eventually get tired of. You will gain absolutely NO horsepower. Save your money.

Again, where do people get this notion of no HP gain ? Absolutely false. Might not be much, but for $200 on an NA car what are you expecting. Gains hp exactly where you would expect it on the top end.

Everybody claiming they know that it doesn't produce hp is full of it. EVERY printed dyno I have seen has shown SOME hp gain. Not much, but some.

And as for which one, both the Racing Beat REVi & AEM are both good.

mazdaspeed's intake is a more expensive rebadged AEM intake save your cash and go with aem's.

The point that we can all probably agree on is that intakes are not the best place to start for mods as they yield little value. Catless mids, flywheels, nitrous, even turbo kits, will yield better h.p./dollar.

Not to be argumentative, but why is a deeper intake sound preferred? I understand it as it relates to the exhaust but why the intake, too?
Of course, I agree with nitrous, TC/SC, etc you will be getting more bang for the buck. Just some people want to build their car with NA mods. And NA mods will almost never give a bang for the buck value as FI stuff. Just interms of the stuff you can buy such as cat back, hi-flow cat, pulley, etc the intake isn't completely negligible as some people have alluded to.

I had one guy tell me that it was useless in the lower rev range so it was useless. Duh, if you look at pretty much all the NA mods they are useless until the mid-high rev range. That's the nature of this engine. You won't get any low end power with pretty much ANY NA mod.

fanman, what you say about the low end is true.... but short of piggyback fuel/ignition controllers, you can throw every imaginable N/A bolt on at this motor and not see more than 20-25 horses gained even in the upper end of the power band, and thats if you're lucky

so its not that there is nothing to be gained.... but 20-25 ponies for hundreds to thousands of dollars invested.... dunno bout you but i call that negligible

from the description of what you want ideally in an intake...i would wholly suggest that you go with the AEM intake. it matches your description perfectly

you get the noticeable nice, deep sound that you want, you get some power gains, and it is considerably cheaper than the Mazdaspeed CAI that is identical except for the brand name
