Mazsport Midpipe owners
What hardware did it originally come with? I picked up this midpipe from someone else with no hardware... And none of the stock stuff will work correctly..
|
nope-- buy good thick aluminum gaskets from Mr Gasket--rest of it is np.
OD |
got mine used as well with no hardware used my existing gaskets and bolts

OD what about the studs where the spring loaded bolts go into the exhaust? and how about header-side.. did you get new straight bolts or did you reuse the stock stuff? al |
for the front flange you can just go buy some stainless steel bolts with nuts and lock washers. for the rear flange you need to either re-use or get new springs studs from Mazda. those studs are a bitch to find but i can give you some good ideas on how to acquire some.
|
how did you reuse the studs that have the nuts spot welded onto the cat? I got the studs out but no nut... and the hole on the midpipe is much bigger..
|
the studs on the front flange with 3 bolts i just went and bought new hardware from an auto parts store. just make sure the bolts you get go through the holes and use a lock washer with the nut. maybe put a little anti-seize on the threads unless you don't car about buying new ones if you decide to take it off.
|
what about in the rear?
|
Also......what about gaskets? because the stock gaskets are clearly not big enough for the pipe. I helped him try to install it today with no luck.
|
i don't have a mazsport but i'd figure if it should work with other exhausts then you should be able to re-use the gaskets. i have an rx7store midpipe with HKS hi-power and i re-used the stock gaskets.
for the rear flange you need to hold your cat back up to it. guide the studs through the catback flange and thread them into the midpipe flange. then install the spring and thread the nut on. make sure not to tighten the nut too much because it will seize. if you need new studs try going to your mazda dealer and asking the service department if they are replacing any bad cats. then ask if you can have the old studs. they install new studs with the new cat so they will have extra studs. thats what i did and they gave them to me for free. otherwise you will pay something like $9 each or more for new ones. hope this helps. i think i have part numbers too if you need them. |
^ but the nuts for those studs are welded onto the cat.. so I assume you mean with new nuts? or am I missing something..
|
there aren't any nuts welded to the cat. can you show me a pic of what you are talking about. i've taken my exhaust apart many times and i don't recall what you are talking about.
|
ray! take a pic!
|
the rear flange(2 bolt) holes are threaded inside if thats what you mean, or they might weld a nut on instead.
|
nuke, gonna get a pic for you in a few min...
I'm surpised you don't know what im talking about.. the studs In the rear thread into the nuts that are welded onto the cat! |
ok, now look at your new midpipe. is the rear holes threaded?

cat.. |
ok, so the stock one may have a nut welded on, but the Mazsport one might just be a threaded hole. if its threaded you don't need another nut and you don't need one welded on.

curious as to what any other mazsport owner did... |
just found this pic in the FS section. does your holes look like this?
https://www.rx8club.com/attachment.p...6&d=1231535316 |
^ nope :(
|
well there's your problem. i'm not sure what to use there besides getting a nut welded in. that should have came with it.
the only other things that you cannot re-use are the front 3 bolts. you will need to go buy some. |
ok.. but I have to be missing something here.. getting new hardware or having nuts replaced/welded is something that other people would have mentioned... especially if the midpipe came with no hardware..
|
well my midpipe didn't come with hardware either. most of it you can re-use except for the front 3 bolts, which you will have to go buy. its unfortunate that your holes aren't threaded. they should have came that way.
|
anyone with a mazsport pipe? how did you deal with the rear?
|
where the hell did you find one of those things?!?!

how did you have your midpipe done redefine? al |
you ever figure this out?
|
yeah jim (redefine) gave me a call..
I guess I just expected more to come from a midpipe that people payed $500 for... I'm getting straight bolts all around. |
so no spring studs? that sucks, there's no room for movement like that.
|
Mazsport owner here. The original design on the flanges sucks. I have blown out the manifold to midpipe gasket several times now. Scott did not take the time to source real OE flanges that have the inner recess for the crushable metal gasket that say, Racing Beat sells with their exhausts.
Currently I have mine rigid bolted in the rear also. In my opinion, this is not good. Rigid bolted means there is no flexible joint to allow for engine movement, hence I have blown gaskets repeatably. I have my OE midpipe, and the Rotary Performance Supercat Midpipe. Both have the OE flanges. When Racing Beat comes out with their version of the dual silencer midpipe, I'm sure it will incorporate the OE flanges. |

OD |
I have the same problem. Blow the rear gasket out all the time.....
|
So I got some bolts and nuts that hopefully are up to snuff for the application.
I too am interested in what gaskets OD used.. Also.. anyone else wanna share what they did? |
I'm surprised that people have experienced blown gaskets.
I've never experienced a problem with my mid-pipe and it still sounds great. Here is my mid-pipe after taking it out of the packaging (notice the bubble-wrap circles):banghead: https://www.rx8club.com/attachment.p...4&d=1215550107 |
I was under the impression the midpipe came with no hardware? Apart from the very early orders?
|
^mine came with all hardware and gaskets from mazsport, got it last spring or summer

ah okay.. that makes sense.. because there were a few people that said they got it new and got no hardware with it...
i need to find something similar to those gaskets :( |
a generic 2 bolt 3" ID gasket is okay for the catback I assume, yes? But how about header side..

for the header side you have to use that gasket...I am not sure where to get it however since it is not a mazda part...I'm sure racing beat has it |

i need to find something similar to those gaskets :( When I purchased mine, I called a couple times to check on the status and they told me that they were starting to ship the pipes with hardware and were just waiting for them to come from over-seas (if I remember correctly). I'm assuming they were referring to the gaskets because there is no reason to get bolts over-seas. |

I believe it was the earlier people who didn't receive hardware.

found one, mazdatrix, 27 bucks
http://www.mazdatrix.com/8exhaust.htm oops, nm its just the flange, sorry |
^ I believe that is the flange itself. Maybe useable?

I sent an e-mail off to Jim at Racing Beat, hopefully he's got something.
|
What do ya'll think of this:
http://www.mr-gasket.com/ProductDeta...minselection=2 Found a crapload here: http://www.mr-gasket.com/ProductsLis...minselection=2 Not sure which will work the best in this application. |
those are close but not exactly the right shape...look at the pic above of Jon's for comparison
