Called the distributer here and the part # is good but it has yet to be released to the distributor to be able to order. Said to check back in "acouple of weeks " as they can't even order as yet.

Better how?

Make more power? 2 HP MAX, at the very most, since that's what some people have found from the stock intake with the filter removed in dyno testing. (You'll never feel a 2 HP improvement)

Better filtering? No, it's been proven in many tests that K&N filters flow more air compared to same-size paper filters, but do a poorer job of filtering out fine dirt particles.

My opinion - gaining 2 hp (at peak rpm only, below 7K you wouldn't gain any power at all) isn't worth degrading the filtering capabilities of the intake.

I ordered mine on-line this morning - $46. It was already up on their site, and they claim to be right down the street from K&N - company was Fox Performance (4filters.com). No advertising intended, just facts......

So your saying k&n isnt worth it?

That seems to be the consensus among long time tuners - that a K&N will let some particles thru, that the factory filter will stop.

In my 'ricer' days, I was willing to let the engine suffer, if it meant hearing the wonderful intake howl from a K&N cone. But with the '8 I feel the stock filter is big enough (come ON people, it's feakin HUGE!) and I want the motor to last, a LONG time.

Every time I mention K&N to 'Zoomer, I get "the lecture", on particle size, and flow rates, and the little score marks made by dirty apex seals.......

So I'm going with Gordon on this, I will get a nice clean stock filter, and go with that.

I would still like to open up that hole thru the front bulkhead, the one that is WAY smaller than the MAF intake....I feel THAT is where the real gains in flow will be.

Can you guys point me to some site that talk about K&N not being that great? To be honest, this is the first time I've heard that tuners "agree" K&N will allow certain particles in while a factory filter will not. Thanks. :cool:

I posted this same response in a thread where the owner was complaining about a rough idle quality after installing a cold air intake.

You need to be real careful about OILED filter elements. It has been discovered that using an oiled filter medium ne K&N, the oil is sucked out of the filter and passes thru the MAF, coating the "hot-wire" mass airflow sensor thereby skewing any air sensor readings and will affect MPG and idle quality.

Alot of drivers on the VW forums have had to pay for the replacement of the MAF (not covered under warranty) after they installed a K&N filter element (either a cold-air or OEM drop in replacement) The MAF has a fine wire inside (or a fine wire mesh) and the oil from the K&N filter was coating the wire and messing with the engine calibration settings.


Some MAFs can be cleaned but most cannot. The wire is heated during normal operation and the oil that sits on the wire burns (cokes) itself to the wire making it impossible to remove.

DO NOT use excessive amounts of oil when cleaning and re-saturating the filter. It was found that after oiling the filter blow out excess oil with high pressure air from an air compressor.

Just installed a K&N filter in my RX-8. I had never looked at the original filter before and I was impressed with the original filter. I would not have ordered a K&N if I had seen what a good (large filter area) filter came with the car.

Well, I've got the Green Filter drop -in because my experience with K&N has led me to believe that they "over-oil" their filters before packaging. As stated before in this thread, that's not good.

After years of only using K&N, I got the Green Filter simply because they had one for the 8 before K&N. After seeing their filter out of the packaging, I didn't think it was properly oiled because my K&N filters had always been "drenched" in oil. I called Green Filter and they stated that K&N "over-oiled" their filters on "many occasions."

I've been happy with the Green Filter so far, but I'm waiting until a proven cold-air system is introduced.
