How to improve ur 8.

So ive been doing some research and i ended up not going for the intake but mayb an exhaust. Thing is everyone is saying why would u get this or that for 2-3 more hp. So the question is what makes a real big difference in throttle or torque or anything to the car? I mean what can u do with around $1000 that would increase ur 8? Ive been looking into car headers do those make a big difference??

From what I see the Cobb AP, and a good tune are the best power for the money.

A reliability mod too!

See MazdaManiac (or search for him).

I am not a current owner of an AP, but my piggy bank is on schedule for this year.

05rx8mazda 09-04-2008 03:56 PM

cobb, flywheel, and cat delete... most power gains right there =] from N/a Experience

restiller 09-04-2008 04:03 PM

there's a power gain with a lighter flywheel?

smy266 09-04-2008 04:18 PM

The flywheel is not necessarily a power gain... it just allows for more hp to reach the wheels due to the lighter rotational mass

Socket7 09-04-2008 04:42 PM

Spelling and grammar lessons are always good things to spend money on...

You're not going to get significant power increases without going FI, period. end of story. Blowing $1000 for an amount of horsepower that you'll barely feel seems a waste to me. Especially when there are other mods you can do that will have significant gains in things like handling and appearance.

Mazdaspeed springs?
Decent Tires?
Short shifter?
Swaybars?
Strut bars?
Strakes?

I LOL'ed on that one

Anyways, this question has been asked millions of times. Look around.

Nitrous can be done for under $1k and has good results.

The COBB AccessPORT is a solid mod as well.

An intake will net you more power than any exhaust (except a race pipe), but don't expect much.

dhan 09-04-2008 05:26 PM

So I heard a lot about the COBB Acessport but i never knew it was really that great of a use. So it makes your torque and hp higher? And it automatically tunes your car for you? Flywheels i don't know any good brands anyone know a decent one?

mac11 09-04-2008 05:29 PM

don't suggest a flywheel to this guy. he is going to be pissed off when he goes to get it installed and they want $4-600.

No.

The Cobb AP is a flash tool that reprograms your cars stock computer (PCM) with custom tunes.

Visit www.mazdamaniac.com for more info.

I would really suggest researching more, however, before you just go making your car a parts shelf.

Wouldn't a good place to learn about the Cobb Access Port be http://cobbtuning.com/ ??

dhan 09-04-2008 05:54 PM

Will a Cobb AP be decent with bone stock 05 rx8?

Sure, but I sent him to MM's website because you free custom tuning (something COBB doesn't offer). And his support is better.

CrazyStoo 09-04-2008 11:47 PM

agreed. cobb tuning. very hot little item.

Jon316G 09-05-2008 12:04 AM

Cobb + Cat-delete = best bang for your buck.

RedefineRX8 09-05-2008 12:05 AM

best way to improve your rx8 is suspension/sway bars/brake pads/tires/driving lessons.

djcharlee 09-05-2008 12:42 AM

quick question. won't deleting your cat make your car smell?

RedefineRX8 09-05-2008 09:39 AM

^ yes, terribly. So bad that people stuck behind you in traffic will definitely curse you out when they get the chance to pass you. True story.

That would be a matter of opinion.

You do get the smell of gas, though. It just depends on how much it bothers you.

Socket7 09-05-2008 01:40 PM

The smell will also get you pulled over and cited for running without a cat, which is illegal in every state in America AFAIK.

23109VC 09-05-2008 06:54 PM

so how much power will a Cobb accessport actually give someone?? enough to feel?

is it like 3-5 or like 10-20?

DrewMan 09-05-2008 07:01 PM

if the EPA find out youre running without a cat (in a state wheere the EPA has powaa), they can fine you some big bux.

i think if you dont have on in aus, its upwards of 3000 or something silly like that

StealthTL 09-05-2008 07:09 PM

MM's map for the Cobb gives a real 'feelable' increase, which is all you can expect.

That, together with the raised idle and increased oil injection rate, make it a very worthwhile spend.

Not being a machanic or anything, is the Cobb something I can do myself or is it difficult?

alz0rz 09-05-2008 11:25 PM

oy oy oy

You could load maps easily, yes. You probably couldn't create your own maps/tunes.

It's just a matter of of plug into the OBD port.

Rootski 09-06-2008 12:28 AM

If you wanted a car you could dramatically improve for $1000, you bought the wrong car.

dhan 09-11-2008 02:00 AM

Looked at threads and i think im going to go for the rp supercat for now since it is in the "ok" price range. Hopefully it will sound good with the stock exhaust =)

Flashwing 09-11-2008 02:14 AM

Good performance parts and going fast cost money...lots of money. $1,000 is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to RX8 performance.

I agree that a cat delete and the COBB would be your best bet and would cost you about $1,000 when you're all said and done. The deleted cat does cause an increase in the smell of gas. At least in the state of Arizona, I've not once been stopped for it.

I've also traveled to LA, and passed through over a dozen other states with my car and not been stopped for having no cat.

dhan 09-11-2008 11:15 AM

What kind of cat delete is good or do you guys reccomend? I want to shoot them flames haha

9krpmrx8 09-11-2008 01:38 PM

Best bang for the buck is Nitrous. Hands down.

stop going on rx8club.com

Renesis07 09-13-2008 08:33 AM

Ive been pulled over 3 times without a cat and the cop never even noticed the smell  , just proceeded to give me a lecture of how dangerous it is to have tint and how I should have a front plate, lol.
