GReddy SP2 Installed

and I LOVE IT. Car sounds soo much better with it on IMO. Not loud like a pissed off bumble bee, a low deep growl loud is more of a better description. I did the install in my gargage with my brother and it only took 1 hour. Was not as hard as I thought and I saved some money by doing it myself. Car feels like it has a lot more pop IMO. Thanx for all the people that supplied me the info with concerning the install and quality. Anyway, I got the exhaust from http://revhighonline.com/ for $520 shipped. Excellent service. No need for extra shipping, like overnight or next day or something. I got my exhaust within 4 days including the day I ordered it. Well I am just so thrilled, I had to share my feelings with ppl that will know where I am coming from. Take care and happy revving.

congrats on ur exhaust.

dazygirl415 04-04-2005 03:11 PM

I have the same exhaust and can't wait to test it out!

darkducati 04-04-2005 05:26 PM

I love mine. Doesn't sound ricey like alot of people say. Just a nice smooth tone. And I love the pop when I shift @5-6k rpm. Good stuff.

juikster 04-04-2005 09:35 PM

I hope, too, one of these mulleniums, get a greddys because I would like mine to have that cool sound cruising my neighborhood, ohhhh yehhh ;)

Malloy 04-06-2005 07:55 PM

Does it drone at highway speeds? Is it just a bit louder than stock? Im looking for an exhaust that sounds a little more aggressive than stock, that also looks good. The Mazdaspeed supposedly fits my sound requirement, but the tips suck.

expo1 04-06-2005 08:08 PM

No, it does not drone. I have had mine on since November and today was the first time I thought to myself, “ Self, this thing is loud”. It was in the high 70’s for the first time this year so I drove home with the top open, windows down. The exit off the highway curls around and under six lanes of highway and I had to step on it to merge. It was like driving in a small tunnel and it was LOUD! The echo of the SP2 in a tunnel @ 7,000 RPM sure sounded like I was driving a F1 car, nice but it was loud. Which brings me to the point if you need it be quiet just keep the revs under 4,000, but over that it’s loud, a GOOD loud.

Awesome... this is what I'm looking for. My Borla equipped Miata would sound like that going through under an overpass- not ricey, just low and loud... although it did drone with the hardtop on. I haven't been impressed with the sound of the Borla on the RX8 though, so I'm looking for the kind of sound you're describing.

Since you've had it on for a while now, have you seen any problems with melting around the rear-facia? My only hesitation is those Greddy tips are huuuge... is there enough clearance?

Thanks for the info!

expo1 04-06-2005 08:42 PM

I have the Exhaust Finishers ( waste of money IMO ) , had them before I got the SP2. So they are kind of ‘protecting’ the fascia, but others SP2 owners that do not have the finishers report there is no problem with melting. The only negative I can say is it hard to clean the Exhaust Finishers with the SP2 tips. Also the tips will turn a light gold color as a result of the heats effect on Stainless Steel. If you polish the tips with something like “ Never Dull “ it will not be as bad.

poolsidenaz 04-06-2005 08:50 PM

I've had my Greddy on since May '04 *and* I live in the desert where it's over 110 degrees in the summer. The rear-facia is perfectly in tact and still looks absolutely brand new. Not even a hint of any kind of problem. In fact if you look at the tips on the Greddy -vs- the size of those openings, they fit perfectly. Why on earth did our stock tips come so darned small compared to those large moldings anyhow? They'll looking shockingly huge to you at first but truth be told, I think they fit the openings perfectly. Had the stock tips not been so small, the Greddy's wouldn't seem so large :D As said above, the Greddy tips take on a golden hue quickly after installation (and is the one and only thing I'd change if given the choice). As far as sound goes, Greddy is the best choice in my opinion

Thanks expo and poolside... sounds like this is a no-brainer then. Sucks about the bronzing of the tips, but I saw the same thing on DMENAC7's Racing Beat exhaust, too... so I guess it's common.

Kel Rx8 04-09-2005 11:15 PM

great choice :)

Moostafa29 04-10-2005 04:21 AM

Do any of you with the GReddy exhaust have a high flow cat? I've heard it with the straight midpipe on the Rotary Performance website, and thought it sounded good, but a little too loud.

Thinking about ordering RB or Greddy this week for my 'new' 8.
Can the stock exhaust be removed and the new put on by 'one' person???
I really don;t have any help right now and was wondering if this was possible.
Also, does RB and Greddy simply 'bolt on' with no new hangers or hardware?

Thanks

Alan

expo1 04-10-2005 04:26 PM

Yes, one person can install it and yes it is a bolt on job. You do need ramps / jackstands to raise the rear of the car and a basic set of metric tools. Hardest parts are removing the rubber hangers and the trim around the tips.

mikefrombarrie 04-10-2005 04:33 PM

Whats the weight of the Greddy Exhaust?

I'm leaning more towards getting the Racing beat, but i dont like that its almost the same weight as stock... I hope the greddy takes acouple of pounds off!

apotocki 04-10-2005 04:44 PM

Mike - sounds like we're in the same boat.....I also am leaning towards the RB but want to be sure there is 'some' sound difference from stock (for my $600)! From what I've heard, the Greddy is for sure louder.....but I fear it may be too loud.

apotocki 04-10-2005 04:44 PM

Expo - THANKS.

poolsidenaz 04-10-2005 05:00 PM

I can't understand why Greddy is getting this "loud" rap. I've heard Borla & RB; both are louder than my Greddy

Is loud a bad thing? My Greddy is loud when I want it to be which is fine with me. Drive under 4,000 rpm and it's not that much louder than stock. Go over 4,000 and it is loud but not open exhaust loud. Unless you live in a big city the SP2 is a fine system that will not give you headaches. As for the weight the Greddy was about 2 lbs lighter than stock.

L8APEX 04-12-2005 08:01 PM

http://www.mazdatrix.com/8exhaust.htm

this website has the RB, Greddy, Borla and Mazdaspeed exhausts, with sound. Not sure what their setup is beyond the exhaust, i.e. midpipe, but they are good sound clips.

I finally pulled the trigger- I ordered the SP2 tonight.... Revhighonline.com for $524 and free shipping. Can't wait to get that puppy installed :D

Good luck, you're going to LOVE it. The only thing I recommend when installing, besides the rear of the car, jack the middle of the car up as well. It will give you more room to work with the Spring loaded bolts. Best of luck! Happy Reving!

Thanks... I wish they'd hurry up and ship it! : )

I'm planning on putting all four corners up on jackstands to make plenty of room for work. My Miata didn't have spring loaded bolts, and I've never seen them on any of the cars I've worked on... any special socket size I need to worry about?

RevHighOnline.com ships very quickly, I had my exhaust within 4 days of ordering it. Not bad for standard shipping. You should be fine with the four jackstands. Yeah, there are spring loaded bolts that connect from the Cat the the pipe. I cant remember the size socket I used but as long as you have a set, you're okay.

Good luck.

I ordered mine about 2 weeks ago from revhighonline, and had it at my door in 4 days! Awesome price ($524), free shipping. Been driving with it for exactly one week now. I do not think it is loud at all! Perfect growl.
Tips have already turned colors, which I think is kinda cool (haven't made up my mind fully).
I have seen no mods on any RX-8's here in Tulsa, it's kind of nice being a little unique now :) .
Enjoy your exhaust!

I just missed a batch last week, so they didn't ship mine until yesterday... I was hoping to install it this weekend, but now I have to get the pool ready for the summer instead. Now I have to go to NYC on a business trip next week so my SP2 will be arriving and sitting lonely in my garage until I get back : (.

Why must work always interfere with my fun?! :D

I couldn't find it any cheaper, on top of free shipping and no tax... hard to beat.

... And I LOVE FedEx Ground- can you believe Saturday Delivery?! My SP2 was just dropped off a few minutes ago... now I know what I'll be doing tomorrow morning :D

Woohoo! This thing rocks... high quality, solidy built, perfect fit and looks fantastic. And the best part- the sound-- it sounds friggin' incredible... I feel like I'm driving an exotic supercar. The rev-burble-pop is so much fun to listen to, I know my mileage is going to suffer thanks to my right foot playing with the gas-pedal shaped volume knob :D

The install took a little over an hour - basically one hour to remove the OEM, and 10 minutes to install the Greddy (and that's with a hangover and 4 hours of sleep : ). In case anyone else is reading this before installing- the spring loaded nuts on the cat/midpipe are 14mm, and you'll probably need a deep well socket. My old trick of lubing the rubber exhaust hangers with soapy water spray helped speed the removal of the OEM exhaust quite a bit.

Here are a couple closeups of the tips in detail:

LoveMy8 04-24-2005 09:22 PM

Same install with me. The OEM was a pain in the ass, but the GReddy was really easy! Congrats on the new exhaust....Enjoy the polished finish on the tips, that will soon disappear! Yeah I know it sucks. Anyway, good luck with it and enjoy, I know I AM!

Welcome to the Cult of Greddy SP2 G8rboy, now you can take over for me the praising of this exhaust on the board when people ask for recommendations. I am going to my first track day with my SP2 5/7 and can’t wait to hear it make it’s music for 25 minutes straight over 7,000 RPM.

Woohoo, another SP2 convert. I bought mine late last year from revhighonline for $502 plus shipping. Been in love with it ever since. And I agree with earlier comments, driving above 5k or 6k under overpasses is really something every 8 owner should experience. Its a real headturner.

On my way home from work there's road cut into the side of a hill, with a 20' tall retaining wall on one side... today I had that piece of road to myself, and as I ran it up to redline the Greddy was reverberating off the wall- it sounded like I was being chased by a Formula race car at 9000RPM. I had an eargasm :)

Jdunsh 04-25-2005 11:53 PM

I want this system, but I am really don't want anything too loud. How would you compare the noise to the stock system?

Well, at idle and low RPM cruising, there's just a subtle bass note to it - reminds me of a 350z/Infiniti G35. At wide open throttle however, it's quite loud... considerably louder than stock. So far I've heard the Borla, Racing Beat and now the Greddy in person... the Greddy is easily the loudest, but not to the level of a civic-ricer-fart-cannon exhaust... it sounds much more refined than that. There's no "buzziness" or droning at highway speeds... the two biggest concerns I had. I couldn't be happier with the exhaust note, and with my custom intake, 'N' flash, and exhaust I couldn't be happier with the performance.

Hmmmmm, its such a difficult decision. I want somewhat loud, but I don't want it too loud to the point where I couldn't take a girl out to dinner in it. Decisions, Decisons!! Its either Greddy or RB.

I will say that the RX8 is insulated pretty good when the windows are up and sunroof is shut... much better than my Miata with a Borla exhaust- you couldn't escape the noise if you wanted to. My wife is not happy with the new and impoved aural experience, but she hasn't been inside it yet, just heard me coming and going, and revving it up in the garage- the sound from behind it is pretty damned aggressive.

Not sure if that helped much... but if you're on the fence with the noise level, you might also want to look at the Hymee Enhanced exhaust.... good looking, great price, and from what I've been told, it's a little more mellow than the Greddy, but more agressive than the RB.

apotocki 04-27-2005 06:10 AM

I would also recommend looking into the RX8Store exhaust.....its a Magnaflow system and also sounds great! I just installed it within the past 2 weeks. It has a deep, throaty sound to it that isn't too loud. It sounds great at mid-range and really comes alive at WOT. Besides that, it has my wife's approval!

Jdunsh 04-27-2005 03:15 PM

haha, thank you for your inputs it has helped a lot, the points about your wives are very helpful. As of now I think i'm going to go with the RB exhaust only because I just ordered the RB intake. Also in the future if I decided to go with a midpipe I think the the Greddy would be too loud for me. Thank you though for your input, it did help.

Dumb question... but does anyone have pictures of the tips after they've "turned" colors?

I have Comptech SS Exhausts on my TL-S for almost 2.5 years and they haven't changed colors one bit... so I'm kind of confused why the aftermarket exhausts for the RX8 do this when they too are stainless.

Thanks in advance :)

GotZoom 05-02-2005 02:14 PM

I will add my .02. I have had mine on for about two weeks. The place who did the install (they put on sways, tires, wheels, etc) said it was one of the nicest exhausts they have seen. They loved the way it filled out the holes in back. As far as sound, I am totally impressed. I had a hard time deciding between the RB, GReddy and Borla. I am sooo happy with my choice. Too loud? Not at all. Like what was mentioned above, under 4000, hardly a difference. Floor it - get the rpms up - it sounds so sweet. I was out this past weekend, windows down, sunroof open. Laid on the gas a couple of times and heard the subtle roar - music to my ears.

My wife was in the car - she didn't even notice. So....too loud for spouse or date? No worries there either.

I think it has mostly to do with the heat the rotary puts out- our cats run much hotter than a piston engine. After one week, mine have the slightest bronze tint to them... not bad yet. I'm looking into this Never Dull stuff people are talking about and see if a weekly application of that will help.
