I haven't heard a single aftermarket intake or exhaust that really fits the rotary's high revving nature, all of them seem to just give the RX-8 a typical Civic + cheap exhaust's low pitched "BROOM BROOOOOM" sound. Ugh. Make something that gives the RX-8 a nice, high pitched "WAP WAAAAAAAAAP!!!!" exotic scream and I'd buy it.

It is really hard to tell from sound clips, but one I heard that I thought sounded really good, and kind of exotic was the Espelir Exhaust. I haven't heard of many people having them, but I think that's what I"m going to buy. Maybe you might want to look into it.

I will have to agree with him. I don't think he means exactly like a Civic fart can. He means the aftermarket exhausts make the car sound deeper and more conventional. He's completely right that the exhausts lose the rotary "bandsaw," "nest of buzzing hornets" quality that the rotary is known for. Only the OEM exhaust provides that. Yes I want louder and I want louder at lower rpms but I want the exhaust to retain the OEM tonal quality. All the aftermarket exhausts completely change the tonal quality to a more conventional quality similar to the deep growl of many piston sports cars. And that to me and Vertigo is not the "rotary sound."

BINGO! Somebody else gets it, what's out there currently for the RX-8 just destroys any sort of uniqueness to how a rotary should sound. I managed to finally hear another RX-8 with OEM exhaust get on the gas on a straight away and the exhaust note was definitely different and unique from anything I have heard around town where modified cars are a dime a dozen. That is why I'm so sick of hearing "BROOM BROOOOM", I hear it on just about every other car around where I live.

Listen to a clip of the 787B, now THAT is how I always envisioned a rotary sounding like. Of course I'm not expecting to somehow get that sound from a two rotor engine but that is the model of sound I am after, not the whole low and bassy sound that is so common to piston engine cars. The rotary is a high revving engine, it should sound closer to a race car, and not like an average ricer car.

Moonrover333 02-19-2006 09:30 AM

if you want that sound get any of the aftermarket ones with a unresonated midpipe, turboXS sounds like it very much at WOT

All anyone wants in this world is to be understood. :wavey: :wink2:

Cooder 02-19-2006 10:30 AM

I want that 787B sound, too. That sound also reminds me of that sound clip of the Formula 1 car revving while being tested in a garage, which is quite different from the somewhat reserved pinched nasal sound it makes during a race seen on TV. I seem to remember many years ago seeing a Lemans race on TV and hearing a tight, "controlled" wail of a trumpet or bugle with intermittent blips. THAT'S the sound I want ideally but I don't know if you can produce it at low engine speed.

wisconsinben 02-19-2006 01:56 PM

I'm in this boat too...I bought the rx8 mainly for it's uniqueness, and if I'm going to buy an aftermarket exhaust I'd want it to ENHANCE that uniqueness. I love that the rotary at WOT sounds more like a motorcycle than V8 (or turbocharged four banger)...I'd hate to lose that.

it's cause a lot of people that get the car wants that deep v8 note I guess. I with you guys on this one, i'm starting to enjoy the higher pitch sound of the rotary.

Cooder 02-19-2006 07:10 PM

I wish we could retain the high pitch of the OEM exhaust but make it a little louder at all rpm and also increase the diameter of the tips. I really like the new Mazdaspeed exhaust tips.

mlane302 02-19-2006 07:24 PM

I ask again, what about a midpipe or supercat with the OEM catback...

I remember someone on here saying he had a hi-flow cat, with an OEM catback and it was barely louder than stock, but he had the performance gains.

Besides the Espelir exhaust, I thought I also heard the cork Sport Exhaust which I thought also sounded a little bit higher pitched, and a little more exotic. Anyone else know about either of these?

I've heard the one on this site but I thought someone who's heard one in person might have more details on sound and build quality.

I'm also curious what maybe an unresonated midpipe would sound like with an OEM exhaust. For example, the B & B midpipe with stock cat back. That might sound good. I've heard the B & B midpipe with the borla exhaust and it was CRAZY loud. The only thing is I think I would like to change the tips out. Is that possible? The stock are kidna puny IMO.

Yeah you can change the tips, several people on this site have midpipes and supercats with OEM catbacks, we just need someone to start posting clips. I have a thread on this i'll bring back to the top...

what part about "sound clips are useless" don't you understand?

itsallaboutgary 02-20-2006 01:45 PM

does anyone know if there is a sound difference between the FIRST GEN MS EXHAUST and this new MS dual muffler exhaust?

This one sounds a bit more agressive. The original sounded more like a stock piece I thought.

mike1324a 02-20-2006 06:05 PM

The easiest way to make something louder is to make the resonating chamber bigger or simply put more air through it. Its the same concept as a musical insterment. Making the resonating chamber (or the pipes in this case) bigger will make it louder but at the same time make it a lower tone. You could put more air throught it but thats not easily possible unless you simply add more rotors i guess. The only other option is less muffler in the equation. This would still modify the sound in some way.

Japan8 02-20-2006 07:55 PM

Quite awhile back I saw/heard an RX-8 speeding by with a AutoExe kit. Since it had the kit and the exhaust was noticably louder I'm assuming it was the AutoExe cat-back. If so... while it is certainly more pricey than US made stuff, it sounded bad-ass.... 787B kind of badass.

What kind of sound compared to let's say a Greddy SP2? I've heard that before so a comparo to that tone could give me a good Idea.

I just installed the New MS Sport Exhaust about 30 minutes ago. It really doesn't sound anything like stock, it's a lot louder than I thought it would be. Sound really nice between 4k and redline. I don't really like it much below 4k because it's a bit to throaty.

Super easy to install it took less than an hour using a lift and the correct tools. Everything fit perfectly and all the correct gaskets, bolts, etc. are included.

Olorin2 02-22-2006 08:32 AM

Yeah, it is somewhat throaty... but then again a lot of people like that. It's all a matter of opinion. One thing I've found is that the exhuast gets louder as it gets hotter. It'll really roar at WOT on the highway too. Still liking it though, as long as it stays quiet at speed. ;)

RotaryRider36 02-22-2006 10:42 AM

You're right, the roar at WOT is awesome. The fact that you can simmer it down at speed is quite pleasant.
