Final Gear and LSD installed!!! But waiting for break-in...

** 6/4/2007 Update **
I had a chance to bring the car to cali speedway infield, but to my disappointment, the car doesnt seem much faster.
The configuration was different from the last time I went, so I cant do a straight time to time comparison, but on the front straight, I am only able to reach 108-110mph. Which is the exact same speed I could reach before I put on the 4.777 gears.

Now, I also did a comparison with my friends bone stock 2007 S2k. I wont go into details, but lets just say, both is the same until 3rd gear, the s2k seems to pull.

So... Im still in shock, cuz I expect to pull from a stock S2k... :|

** 5/7/2007 Update **
Ok, I changed my LSD oil and have tried to really push the car. My feedback:

1. Torque throughout the rev range is improved.
2. 3rd gear and up is where the increase really shows. Before, reving 3rd gear seems to take forever...

As of how much of a gain? Well, on a scale of 1 = minimal gain, 5 = massive gain (think turbo). I would probably rate it at most a 3.
For your reference, I personally would rate a flywheel, probably 1, 1.5 at most.

Video wise, I only have access to crappy cell phone videos and I have no idea how I can secure it while driving...

Overall, I think its a good mod, but not a great mod. Defn this is the mod that made the most power difference on my car.

LSD wise, dont know whats a good benchmark to test that apart from track :P

Mileage observation updated below

** 05/02/2007 Update**
Im waiting to put in new LSD oil to really test things out, but I think MPG from the final gear should interest people. Unfortunately, Im only thru with my first tank of gas after the goodies. Will keep on posting as I go thru more tanks of gas.
My MPG varies from a low 16s up to 19s.

1. 244 miles (50% highway, 50% city) / 13.9 gallons, 17.6MPG
2. 239 miles (80% highway, 20% city) / 12.1 gallons, 19.8MPG
3. 214 miles (50% highway, 50% city) / 13/6 gallons, 15.7MPG!! (Lowest I've seen for my car. But I did kind of pushed the car quite a bit on some roads...)

** Original **

Finally got my Feed gears AND Re-amemiya 2 way LSD installed!!

But need to wait for breaking-in the LSD before can really test them both out..

Wait for my review, but initial impression/review is:

1. the car really wants to rev up high now. im like driving at 4-5krpm constantly..
2. I dont think you need to adjust the speedo, cruising 80mph is now at 4500rpm. Needs time to get used to that.. :P

Thanx

karatekid8989 04-17-2007 04:22 PM

hey where did you purchase your Feed gears from?

RoXanneBlack8 04-17-2007 04:30 PM

got a ratio for us to drool over? 4.88? 5.10?
pricing?

mazdaexe 04-17-2007 04:57 PM

feed 4.777 from lazi (jondemand)
hardware for the install from onlinemazdaparts.com
install from neptune speed at huntington beach.

ended up to cost quite a bit, I sure do hope its worth it....

NgoRX8 04-17-2007 05:01 PM

very interested in hearing your updates :)

Jedi54 04-17-2007 05:12 PM

can't wait to hear updates

Moostafa29 04-17-2007 05:56 PM

I had these, but ended up selling them as I am already having issues with CA gas being so expensive, and me only getting 210 to a tank now. I'd really like to hear your impressions on the difference it makes though.

peterisurhero 04-17-2007 08:27 PM

ey, how much did everything cost?? i am going to go that route soon. just don't know if its worth the money.

Ever Hernandez 04-17-2007 08:32 PM

Just put in a brand new clutch and flywheel. Mechanic said the Feed gear set is just what the car needs. Don't forget about the update...he he

Cam 04-17-2007 11:20 PM

Awesome. I'd like to do the Feed gears someday.

Post some vids!

mdw1000 04-18-2007 12:09 AM

I've got my FEED gear on order from lazi for my 05 AT. Hopefully it will get here soon!

peterisurhero 04-18-2007 12:14 AM

feedback!!! feedback!!!

nycgps 04-18-2007 12:31 AM

Added to the list of upgrades.

mazdaexe 04-18-2007 10:16 AM

I wish I could break in this thing earlier, but I have short commutes.. :P

Btw, anybody know the proper way to break in a LSD?
I read from the kaaz website. They say to drive in a "8" pattern for 45 mins??
and during the turn, need to disengage the clutch...

Dont know where I can find such a spot near my area to drive a "8" pattern and for 45 mins?? hope I dont throw up afterwards :(

nycgps 04-18-2007 10:18 AM

I dunno for sure but I would say just drive it like usual. and change the fluid out after maybe 1K miles.

karatekid8989 04-18-2007 10:54 AM

how many miles is the break in period of the gears?

BaronVonBigmeat 04-18-2007 10:59 AM

Just find an old strip center parking lot. Like a shuttered-up K-mart or something.

Just make sure it's near a gas station.

TeamRX8 04-18-2007 03:05 PM

it's in 1st gear up to 12 mph on the straight section and only for 30 minutes, doing mine tonight, hope my heads not spinning too long afterwards. Fortunately the lot here at work is big enough.

http://kaazusa.com/techHelp/tech_Help.htm

you paid too much if you bought it through RE-Amemiya, I was just getting ready to post that all they do is mark up an aftermarket LS that you can buy anywhere else, that also probably means that you didn't get their newest WPC treated clutch plates either, sorry ...

mazdaexe 04-18-2007 03:35 PM

I would have guessed that all LSD being the same everywhere. oh wells...

This link is a little different than the one you posted. but i guess its the same.
http://www.kaazuk.com/faq.php#fixchat

my mechanic told me 1k miles for break in, then replace the LSD oil.

Imidazole 04-18-2007 03:41 PM

Anxious to hear results!

lazi 04-18-2007 04:34 PM

im glad you like it mazdaexe! congrats im jealous i want one too haha

yours will arrive end of this month to paul =)

TeamRX8 04-18-2007 07:17 PM

Kaaz says to change the oil following the break-in procedure, from your site link:

After the initial break-in procedure, the LSD oil must be changed. If you examine the discarded oil after breaking in the LSD, you will notice it contains metallic particles from the rubbing of the plates during break-in.
extra time on break-in won't hurt anything except trying your patience

just finished breaking mine in :)

olddragger 04-18-2007 07:51 PM

cant you get about the same thing with a 40 walled tire and a 17" wheel?
olddragger

TeamRX8 04-18-2007 08:18 PM

it would take a 225/40-17 to achieve a 24.1" diameter vs the OE 25.9" dia.

eforer 04-19-2007 12:42 AM

Just did a quick search and didn't turn up anything so....

Is there any way to recalibrate the speedometer for use with a different final drive?

Cam 04-19-2007 03:33 AM

I dont think the speedo should be off, I believe the 8's VSS is in the tranny, not the diff.

Someone correct me if im wrong.

secret8gent 04-19-2007 10:41 AM

i thought the speed sensors were in the wheel hubs (for abs)....

SmokeyTheBalrog 04-19-2007 11:37 AM

I know there are boxes that you put in line with your speedometer that let you recalibrate it. I read threads about them here quite a while ago. Don't remember what they are called.

mazdaexe 04-19-2007 11:53 AM

its the yellowbox from ricks2k.com. But from the looks of it, we dont need that, its calibrated correctly already. :D

dastallion951 04-19-2007 02:35 PM

no what is in ur wheels is the wheel speed sensors which are for abs as well as for traction control............the vss which is the vehicle speed sensor is calibrated through a sensor usually on imports n domestics is on the back of the transmission not on the rear end.............just thought id put my $ 0.02 in............but how much did it cost for rear end gear swap n lsd conversion........thats my next mod in mind.........i have rb intake rb exhaust B&B midpipe upgraded plug wires, flywheel clutch rims rb raceflash n a hooked up system......i want somethin with a little more of a gain in the accleration which i can give up 10-20 mph top speed to break in 13's...... so can u give me an idea how much it ran u for parts, i got a guy at my work whos our shop mechanic that can do the install.......i just gotta get a price n location where to go

mdw1000 04-20-2007 11:23 AM

I ordered the gear from JonDemand for around 700, maybe a little less. Paul at Mazmart is having the new diff built for 300 plus a 500 core swap deposit. Not sure if these prices are still good or not since I ordered mine back in January. Hopefully will have it installed by mid May.

karatekid8989 04-21-2007 02:51 PM

so did you need anything else other than the gear set itself in order to get the gears installed?

Trekk 04-21-2007 07:38 PM

You'll need a new bearing for the pinion (it's pressed on).
I think you can reuse most everything else if its all in good shape.

dastallion951 04-21-2007 08:02 PM

well im gonna basically need an OTD list of whats needed for this gear swap..............???? then comes the scrimpin n savin with bills n extra cash.......

karatekid8989 04-21-2007 08:23 PM

I'm in the same boat. this is the next mod i want to do and i want to make sure i know exactly what i'm going to need to order so there won't be any surprises when i take the 'ol 8 to the shop

DrewMan 04-21-2007 11:32 PM

jeez that would eat up the fuel!

how much mileage are you getting?

karatekid8989 04-22-2007 12:14 AM

dastallion951 04-22-2007 12:19 AM

Short feedback on gears on first post. 2nd MPG updated.

I have specified my "before" MPG to be in the 16-19 range

correct . Changing the final drive will not alter speedo readings .
Only way you can stuff up your speedo is with different sized wheels.

TeamRX8 05-07-2007 03:33 PM

my Kaaz LSD is kicking @ss ...

Hmm, you are getting similar MPG for before and after, thanks for the updates! Additionaly, your after MPG is better than my current MPG (~ 17) with stock. If this is case, that MPG isn't significantly affected, then I too may consider this.

Thanks again, and please do continue to update your MPG at your leisure.

Goodbye!
Edgardo

mazdaexe 05-24-2007 01:23 PM

New MPG update. See at first post.

"3. 214 miles (50% highway, 50% city) / 13/6 gallons, 15.7MPG!! (Lowest I've seen for my car. But I did kind of pushed the car quite a bit on some roads...)"
