Engine Oil for Greddy Turbo RX8

I just got the greddy turbo kit today, and have a question regarding the engine oil. What type of engine oil are you guys (greddy turbo owners) using after having the greddy turbo, the stock 5w20 or 20w50, or something else?

Thanks in advance.

with our racercars the best oil we saw is 5/20 mobil 1 with prolong 8oz add to it motor looks like new everytime with take it down and yes we proved this combo to work better then royal purple. plus this combo gave us gave us 4 whp over all other oil combos.
and with the add heat of your motor u should think about running redline water wetter in your cooling system it drop your tem about 25 degrees.

royal purple 5w-30. Went a little thicker in viscosity to account for the extra heat from the turbo.

Synthetic vs. Real Oil?

I was under the impression that the Rotary Engine in the RX8 actually needs to be able to break down the oil and "consume" it. Using synthetic oil does not allow this natural break down, or consumption to occur and can leave the engine at risk... I am not sure the reason that being able to break the oil down and "consume" it is good, but that's just what I ready somewhere here.... So I have the same question? What kind of natural oil is the best for the Turbo's? One opinion that I got was from CAM at Pettite Racing in Lake Park Florida. If I remember correctly he said to use Valvoline VS1 Racing Oil 10W-50... Valvoline has a "Are you using the correct oil wizard on their web site... www.valvoline.com

Only if you hold the can upside down when you put it in.

I'd probably run a slightly higher viscosity. 0w-30 to 10w-30 would be good choices.

First off all synthetics burn cleaner and are higher grades of oil. Don't ever be scared of using them. If anything be scared of using the lower grade oils that everyone else likes to use. This is the lifeblood of the engine after all. Don't skimp. Conventional oils can contain anywhere from 10-30% contaminants in their base stock. I'm not cheap enough to justify putting that in my engine but then again I also care about my engine.

Synthetics are not responsible for turbo deaths. They are better products. A better oil will not hurt the turbo if a lower grade conventional oil didn't. Something else killed that turbo whether it was foreign object ingestion, improper oil drain, overheating, or coking. Many people blame synthetics on alot of different problems. Why? Misdiagnosis. It would be just as easy to blame any other issue on conventional oils. It's kind of like blaming a flat tire on the air used. It doesn't make much sense.

5W20 is fine for a nonturbo. I'd use a 5W30 for a turbo though. I'd want just a bit more viscosity for the turbo bearing tolerances. A 10W30 is the same weight oil as 5W30 at operating temperatures as is straight 30W. I wouldn't go up to a 20W50 personally but I doubt anything bad would happen because of it. Your mileage would go down a bit and your oil temps would go up. For those reasons I wouldn't use it but there are many rotary owners that are using this grade in the older motors. 5W30 is fine though. As long as you are using oil at all you've probably got nothing to worry about.

I personally use Royal Purple which is no secret. It's fantastic stuff. If you are going to use a "conventional" oil, at least mak sure it is a grade III oil. These are the most refined conventionals and have the least number of impurities in them which in very simple terms means they resist breakdown better. Some oil companies call these synthetics but they are just the best refined conventionals. Since a turbo is hard on oil and adds heat to the system, use a good grade oil. Don't be cheap like many others who can't justify the extra few dollars a quart for somthing that will more than pay for itself in the future when it comes to longevity.

Greddy Oil Pan?

Anyone know how much 5W30 Royal Purple one should use if they have a Greddy Turbo Kit + The Greddy Oil Pan? I know the Greddy Oil Pan is larger then stock, but I am not sure how much more....

Until the oil dipstick is halfway or completely full.

Rp 10w-30

Here is a copy of the email I got back from David Canitz at Royal Purple:

James,

The stock RX8 recommends the 5W20 oil.
Since you have upped the performance with the turbocharger, I would recommend increasing to a 10W30 for street use and even to a 10W40 for track use - particularly for Florida.

Mazda does not recommend synthetics is that decades ago, they had a problem with a synthetic that did not mix well with gasoline. Rather than test all versions, they have continued with a blanket ban....

For the 6 speed trans and the rear Torsen differential, use the RP MaxGear 75W90.
The RP MaxEZ Power Steering is great for the power steering and the RP Purple Ice Coolant Additive are nice additions.

I race Mazda's and have used synthetics in rotaries for 25 years, including RP for the last 14 years.
I own a 94 R2 Twin Turbo and race a bridgeport 12a - all using RP.

Our FAQ goes into specific detail on the rotary if you get a chance to review.

Cheers,

David

Also, re: the amount of oil needed with the Greddy Turbo + Greddy Oil Pan.... Obviously you can check the dip stick for the correct fill amount... I was just looking for an exact amount in Lt. or Qt's.... If anyone knows the exact volume needed please reply.... thanks!

as to the oil ??? if you are going to change to syn i would drain the oil cooler as part of the turbo instal... my guess would be 9qts would do it, but that is just a guess.
