Guys

My RX 8 had some starting (flooding) issues from time to time.

The dealer looked into it and came up with a solution that did the trick for my RX 8 (!)

He changed the 12V starter engine to a 9V version. Result : much faster rotation when starting up the engine.

Wanna know the best part ? There even is a standard MAZDA 9V starter engine available for the RX 8 (!)

Maybe this can help others aswell.. just wanted to share this info.

This was treated by the dealer and Mazda as a standard warranty issue !

The part is a Mazda replacement part for the RX 8.

Didn't cost me a penny.

Is it supposed to last as long as the 12volt starter?

I'm not sure if this is a great idea for cold winters but this guy is in Belgium so who knows :)

The dealer used to do the same thing with the "older" rotary engines. In those days they had to rebuild the 12 V versions to 9V versions.

His first intention was to rebuild a 12V starter engine, but Mazda seemed to have them as a replacement part for the Rx8 (!) The dealer thinks the standard starter engine is a bit weak for the RX8. And he could be right because the 9V replacement version is about 1 1/2 inch bigger !

There shouldn't be any problems using the 9V version.

Really, starting up the RX8 is a whole different experience...!! (shall I make a mini movie ? ) lol

And until now .. no more starting problems.. ;)

And the best part.. it was free .. done by Mazda, so supported by Mazda :)

can you scan and post the dealer service printout? also could you post the part number for the replacement starter engine? (usually a 4 digit number sometimes followed by a slash and a combo of 4 numbers and letters)

any more info would be great...my dealership is on board most likely but if I bring the numbers in it is a guarantee

oops don't have the part number, but since it is a RX8 part and there is only one 9V starter, it should be no problem for a Mazda dealer : :ylsuper:

I wish that were true for any part. It seems that if I don't give the part number on an item they just give me the deer in the headlights stare. So far this has been the case at two of the dealers. Most noticed when I asked for the Aldehyde filter which is for both the RX-8 and MPV and has been out for quite a while.

I wonder how this is any different to the starter motor replacement being done on early model RX-8s elsewhere in the world? Mine got a new starter on Monday (replaced under warranty) as well as a new battery and plugs. Starts in about .5 a second now.

So... if we wanted to get one of these, how would one go by "forcing" their engine to flood?

Don't think you wanna 'force' a flood on these engines......

The "A" in the part number indicating the first revision.

just ask for the 9V version... there is only one part ... :dunno:

If the Mazda dealer doesn't know the difference between a 9V and 12V version .. electrocute him :shocking:

I asked the service manager at Vincent Mazda in Rochester, NY about this. He said Mazda had authorized that retrofit for RX-8s which had trouble starting.

They had just done one (free) for the owner of a Nordic Green which had bought used, then come in for service after flooding. Apparently, Vincent Mazda had serviced this same car for flooding three times for the original owner so this was the 4th incident (though only the first for the new owner).

The service manager told me to take notice of how my 2004 RX-8 starts in the cold weather as we get deeper into winter and if I have a problem they're retrofit me with the other starter motor.

Warranty Starter Motor
 

My car wouldn't start this morning. It's at least the 3rd time I've had it towed. Last night, after working on the car, I started it up to make sure it was going to be OK in the morning. But I didn't sit and wait for it to warm up, even though I thought I should. My dealer charged me ~ $200 last time so I took it to a local garage (good guys) They called later and said Mazda has a starter which turns faster for (only) $670. I also found out I had 4 different spark plugs and only my dealer has changed plugs (a whole other long saga)
It seems to confirm what the others have found. Actually, I was thinking that an automotive electric shop could re-wind it as well.

I have the GReddy turbo so I'm going to have to plead with the dealer to cover it under warranty...

BTW in case you haven't found out, new plugs are $70 CAN each

to help next time don't worry about warming it up just rev it past 4k then turn off the ignition, I still do this after short drives and small movements and have never flooded

my only flooding incident is when the battery died and it was -19F outside

The rev to 4k for 5 seconds works good once it is warm for me. When it is cold and haven't had long enough to warm up fully I rev to 3k for 10 seconds and have never flooded. :bootyshak

Most salesman mention this when giving the lowdown after someone purchases the car.

I have a clarification to ask - those of you who do that: Do you turn off the ignition while it is at 3k or 4k rpms or do you let the rpms fall back to idle and then turn off?

I turn it off while holding the rev letting it rev down on its own

When letting off the gas, that point just before it settles to the lowest RPM is when I turn the key off. The hesitation point if you will, normally just before it falls to 1k if it is warm about 1.5k if it is cold.

I use this when it is below freezing temperature outside.

Another thing I recently adopted is keeping the clutch depressed when turning the key off. This puts less strain on the engine when turning it off.
Does anyone else practice this?

I just got the new starter, bigger battery, and new plugs. The new starter sounds really cool! It seems to turn about twice as fast- almost like a motorcycle starter sound than the slower car sound.

Engine had flooded when it stalled while warming up one cold morning. Had to flatbed to the dealer...
