Dyno'ed my car!

I will be getting my run's tomorrow by email from Advance EFI in Longeuil. Finally dyno'ed my car, but came with some dissapointing results. I think I might need to change my coils or my cat, I have no idea. Here's the video that I put up. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k1xvwPQKUwo
My 3 runs are:
Run1: 164.3
Run2: 162.4
Run3: 163.8

The mechanic said the car was running really smooth and had a good power band, despite the loss in power. He also told me that it was a DYNOJET and had said that there's a 21% loss for the Rx-8, which is quite accurate.

It's a 2004 rx8 6 speed MT
48k kilometers, 30k miles
K&N Drop In Filter
And I premixed with a full tank of gas
Everything else is stock.

But when he dyno'ed the car, alot of lights went on, like the slippery wet light, the ABS, and the Airbag.

Last, I asked why he didn't put a fan in front of the car and he said that N/A cars don't need it because it doesn't have an intercooler or really neeed to cool anything down. I thought you were supposed to put one to simulate the car going on a real road and that the air intake can actually suck some air inside. So any comments on this would be helpful.

That doesn't sound right... it should be around 180 WHP, 160 seems kinda low.

Sounds like you need new coils and or spark pulgs if 30k miles on stock coils and plugs. I dynoed 167hp with bad coils and plugs and around 30-32k miles also (without nitrous) changed them and its night and day

Was the DSC turned off?
I believe I read that you are supposed to do this... though I'm not a "dyno expert".

Thanks for the comments. My garage I go to recently checked it (5k kilometers ago) and they said it was perfect. I only put 10k kilometers since I bought it in February. As I said, the slippery light was already on, I told the guy to press it the last time, and he did, but it didnt make any difference.

Did he press it or hold it in for roughly 8 seconds to completely disable it?

The main reason people dyno with such low numbers (besides bad spark plugs, bad coils) is because the car detects that two wheels are spinning at a perceived 100mph while the other two are stationary. The computer then activates some level of the ABS/DSC system to either brake the back wheels, or refrain from giving full power to the back wheels. Both of which spell low numbers on the dyno.

So here is the DIY to pull the ABS/DSC fuse, completely disabling the system for the purposes of dyno testing the car.

This is the ONLY way to get high and consistent numbers from the RX8.

Step one, find the engine compartment fusebox:



Step two, remove the fusebox cover and acquaint yourself with the fuse diagram:



Step three, with the engine off, remove the 60Amp ABS/DSC fuse, start the car and preform the run.



THE best way to get high numbers out of the rx8 is to run 3 pulls back to back to back with no cool-down period. The 3rd pull in this series is the highest number that your rx8 is capable of achieving. If you would like to try again, wait until the engine is completely cool before re-running the series of 3.

I did that about a year ago at the SoCal Dyno Day with CRH and I got the highest dyno there.

Well Idk what to do. I did a 3rd gear dyno and when he pressed it for a couple of seconds nothing happpened, nothing changed. Also he assured me that there was another rx8 before to and he did the same thing. He told me that other one dyno'ed at around 170-180whp.

May I suggest that:

-Check your tire pressures
-You warm the car up on the dyno for AT LEAST 15 minutes in 4th, 5th and 6th gear at various rpms and speeds. The best way to put heat in the drivetrain is to simulate some pulls but take longer to do this.

Now for the method that will help us to help you should you have a problem:

With the car temps hot, make 2 sets of 3 pulls in 3rd gear. This will allow us to see if your previous 3rd gear pulls are different than these pulls. 6 pulls in 3rd G

Do the same in 4th gear (2 sets of 3 pulls) = 6 pulls in 4th G

Now 5th gear. Same thing. 5th gear will yield you the highest h.p. numbers.

May I suggest that you also purchase a set of coilpacks so that AFTER you are done with your pulls and the car is turned off, install these 4 coil packs. Its much easier than you think. Have a friend help you if you need to. Repeat 5th gear pulls.

Share your findings.

Orly. Good info, I didn't know this, I expect at least 210 whp with that fuse out. lol

Thanks for the info Eric. But it seems I don't have that much money to do ALL those pulls. The guy is charging me 80$ for 3 runs... so 15 runs might be a bit much. One thing I did do though, When I was going to the garage I pushed the car and stayed high in the powerband alot... so Im wondering if that helped.

EDIT: And I did check my tire pressure they were good. 32 psi is enough isn't it?

they shouldput a fan in front no matter what....need to move air across the radiator to help cool....basically it's like you were sitting and burning out during those pulls...could've easily overheated...(depending on ambient temp too)

IT was like 67F. The fan went on like 3 times and was blowing for a good 10mins. I asked the guy and he said there was no point because it's N/A, then I asked him why he put it in the back, he said so that we could get rid of the exhaust fumes. Im not calling him an idiot, but I was just doubtful.

well one on the back woulnd't b bad if ther was not good airflow through the shop at least he was trying to not kill you but easily could have killed your car.....if you go back tell hiim you want one in front no matter what he says.

If you pull that wouldn't the car have to find the trims or something? Isn't that an easy way to show more power on the dyno than you actually have?

yeah, it's a lame method used by people by trying to 'trick' the car into producing more hp.
People should just dyno the car as it is.
It's not like you pull your room fuse every time you want to gun it out of a corner or whenever you feel like driving agressively.

I've never pulled the damn thing and my last dyno was 203.

dont worry i made 169 on the dyno, im looking into correcting that with some new coils and ap.

IDK, I may have to do it that way, because as soon as the car went on the rollers and was started, the DSC (slippery light) and ABS were on. Also my airbag light was on for some reason... I told the guy to press it in front of me, but it didn't change anything.

r0tor read my first post. I stated that I have 30k miles. Also, I do not know the compression of this engine, but recently it has been running quite smooth and seems more powerful.
