check engine light

Hello all, i just bought an 2005 rx8 auto from carmax, ive had it for about 4 days now, and at random times the check engine light comes on, the first time i checked the oil cap lid, for some reason that was loose, however i could have sworn i tightened it when i got gas. what are some other reasons it could be? i havent gotten a chance to bring it to the mazda dealer for them to check it out. i was wondering if there was something i could do about it to save myself the hassle of driving there.
thank you, Jason

Without knowing what the code was it can be anything on THIS list.
Some auto parts stores will read the code for free. If you cannot find that out you will need to go to the dealer.

Are you low on gas? I've had a few that have come up when I've been down around 1/4 tank or below. Turns out that, according to the owners manual, you can get a CEL on this car when you are low on gas. I thought at first it was bad gas, but it happened with a variety of brands. When I'd fill up, it would go away within a couple drive cycles.

Congrats on the new 8 - you're really going to enjoy it!

(Just don't bitch about gas mileage around here

Yeah, we need more information. When does it happen ? Is it the flashing/blinking CEL. Have you had the motor replaced before ? Loose gas tank lid ?
