CEL Disappeared with Midpipe
OK...Weirdness ensues...
05 w/ ~23k + Midpipe
Normally, after a reset and a bit of driving the car will throw a CEL for the missing cat. After a reset its usually gone until I crank off some miles, then I get a CEL like "normal".
I was going to put the cat back in so I could take it into the dealer and today I noticed that the CEL is MIA.
I decided to flog it for good measure...no CEL...
And yes it does work and no its not burned out...
Weird no?

My car has the RP Cat and after about 6 months it started getting a constant CEL. Having the constant CEL lasted for about a year until this April when for no known reason the CEL went away for a couple days.
My inspection had expired so I seized the oppurtunity and took my car in for inspection. The technician plugged in and noticed that I had previous CELs but I did not have a current one so I passed. I told the technician that I tightened up my exhaust the week before and that is probably what fixed the problem. The technician doesn't know what each CEL means nor does he know if you did anything to fix the problem. If the car is working at the time he inspects it, it passes. (Other states make you pass visual which a straight pipe will obviously fail and so would some aftermarket cats.)
BTW, my CEL returned.

Evil,
One more thing. When I had my car inspected I went to the Texas DPS website and searched for "OBDII only" inspection centers. That way they can't put it on a dyno even if they wanted to.
I don't think it will matter, but it is good to be safe.

I used to have to do it in Hell Paso. They shove a probe up your tail pipe and check your emissions. If the car is a smog machine, you fail.
Exceptions were cars over 20 years old.
I loosely keep in mind very few laws...I have problems with that whole...obey thing...

It depends which laws you're referring to since they can vary anywhere from Federal to any particular state (example, California and several other states have laws that exceed the Federal standards), but my RX-8 has all emissions equipment in place and passed the state OBD2 analysis with zero issues as configured. I haven't seen a CEL in over a year ...

Right now, it's simply a WTF thing...why did the CEL disappear? That's just weird to me. Maybe the car overheard me talking about putting the CAT back in and it's doing everything it can to not have to get it reinstalled...haa haa...
New weird thing cropped up today. A metallic rattling which is NOT clutch related. The noise is not coming from the top of the engine bay, and seems to somehow be transmitted via the exhaust somehow. Putting the car in gear does nothing to make it go away. And the rattle only appears after its all warmed up. The noise appears to be forward of the midpipe somewhere...
Looks like I'm going to be spending alot of time underneath the car soon...

Blocked?
I'm assuming that you mean that you'd pass regardless of the AP. I would also assume that you would.
I simply was using any reason to reiterate how much I hate you for your sweet *** toys. Haa...
Any chance I get...any chance I get...haa haa

You should double check your midpipe for leaks. I ran into the same issue and found out later that my midpipe was leaking after the exhaust manifold. Some how the bolts worked them self loose I even lost one nut.
Got some lock tite and re torqued them down and they have not been an issue since.

Updated with 100% more Audio!
Audio clip of rattle...
Link: http://www.eviltwinkie.com/RX8/RX-RATL.WAV
Background:
Just finished a 20 minute drive to get it warmed up. Pulled into the driveway and deployed recorder. The rattle is slightly apparent.
I then press clutch in (should hear me say "IN") and then release the clutch (should hear me say "OUT"). Notice no change in rattle.
I then lightly apply throttle and the rattle disappears. I release throttle, and the rattle reappears. I do this a second time just to be sure.
I then proceed to flog it a little bit. Afterwards, as soon as the engine returns to idle, the rattle reappears, however this time much louder than before. The increase in rattle always happens immediately afterwards.
No loss in power or anything else. Simply noise for now.
I'm going to get under the car and see if I can find anything later today.

Tell me something I don't already know...heh
Got pics comin...looks like the welds came off the heat shield of the exhaust manifold...
That's pretty weird for me to accept, so I took a few pics so maybe someone can tell me if I'm smoking crack...
Midpipe bolts are all snug and I could not find anything else obvious...which I'm sure it won't be....

Tap the midpipe at the CAT/Other noise reducing element. I had one of the earlier RP midpipes, and my CAT rattled like that when it went bad and was just a pile of mush. If the CAT rattles, it is bad and needs to be replaced. RP was great about replacing mine once I showed them the pics.
