Question Which cat wont burn up after leaning the car?

Hi guys, I'm planning to build a custom 3" single exit header-back exhaust. My question is... Which universal cat converter will NOT burn out after tuning the car for better AFR's?

I was thinking that the MetalCat that SC-ed is using will do well, but its like $130 and some people like RotaryGod and TeamRX8 have been saying a cat is a "get what you pay for" kind of thing.

I don't want to spend $400+ dollars on a cat, I'd rather go catless. So does anyone know for sure, or pretty close to sure, what cat in the sub $200 range can withstand the exhaust temperature of a leaned-out Rx8?

Also, Can I mount the cat further back so it is exposed to less heat. The exhaust will cooll a little bit maybe. I'm not good on this subject, so please shed some light.

Thanks a lot!

A hollowed out one!

I burned out a Catco cat on an RX-7 in about 6 months of normal driving. I have a Bonez cat that I've swapped back and forth for a while now but I only drive the RX-7 less than a thousand miles a year. In the past I used the Bonez cat for probably 2 years as a daily driver in the past though and no issues. I've flooded the engine several times through it, run it rich, run it lean and haven't had any issues with it. Saying that it will probably clog the next time I start it up. I bought it through Rotary Performance.

To elaborate a little more, if you lean it out enough no cat will survive for long. Some will just do better than others. Your best bet would be to run catless and then reinstall it one day a year for inspection. That's what I do.

It will keep the cat cooler but will also make it less effient at cleaning the air. It needs to be hot. Legally you can not move it back and many people are concerned with legality reasons. You wouldn't pass a visual inspection with it moved back.

Be careful. You'll make the environmentalists here mad! FWIW, I have done the same thing on all of my RX7's.

i know random technologies makes decent cats. model # 141-30000 is a 3 inch round matalic round cat that flows 598cfm. its over $200 though.

im too cheap for that so im gonna get a magnaflow/carsound instead for like 70$ off ebay.

well.. after looking into the magnaflow/carsound stuff, i found that model number 53009 although high flowing was only good for about 1000' f. to be safe, i got the 59929 which is matalic and is good for up to 1800-2000'f. it was tested by ls1 guys to flow about 598-600 cfm and it only costs $20 more.
