Slight side note here, but I received my Bhr mid pipe w/ Ds cat about two weeks ago. I received excellent service from Charles &the team throughout the transaction. Install went well, and was made super-easy by the included hardware. The sound is roughly equivalent to my gutted stock cat (which is exactly what I was hoping for), butno more gas smell in the cabin and no more perpetual CEL staring me down. The "new cat smell" went away after a few heat cycles and now I am loving life.

I spend a lot of time in dc traffic--often 500 mi. A week--and it's great to not have the first thing my wife says to me when I get home be, "you smell like a race track. I hate your car."

Charles, thanks for a good product & service that exceeded my expectations.

+1 I'm interested to know too.

+2,

even if I must say that it is changing with miles.
Personally I changed the the front gasket with an original one and added a another one 1,5mm tick.

Seems the car has no leakage and this rattle (when releasing the throttle, when accelerating and at idle with a cold engine) disappear/is less audible when the engine is warm.

Bye

ive ordered this and its in the mail :)
i just have a quick question

how hard is this to install?
fyi. im a newb when it comes to cars

any tips?

I rank it a 5 out of 10. Before you get it, start spraying PB Blaster on the nuts at the front and back of the midpipe and the o2 sensor when cold. That may make them easier to remove. I had to twist off the front ones - have a breaker bar or a pipe to extend your socket driver. when you put the new ones on use antisieze. I jacked up one side of the car and put jackstands under it. Read thru a DIY to make sure you have everything ready. I have put one on and off twice and am pretty novice. (I have replaced brakes, rotors, swapped swaybars.)

I started a thread on this a while ago and couldn't really find my answer.
But I wanna ask people who have had BOTH the RB dual resonated and this before paired with the same catback. which one's louder? the RB or the BHR?

second question, would swapping out a header make the system louder?

ShellDude 03-22-2012 09:10 PM

finally got around to installing my BHR mid pipe, replacing the TurboXS pipe that ships with their catback.

I now have a full 3" system that doesn't sound like its breaking the sound barrier. I was (silently) really getting annoyed with the raw sound from the full XS kit.

Note to other auto owners... if you ask for second bung, be sure to tell them you have an auto. I didn't mention this to Ray and had to get a 3rd bung welded as the default spot for the MT doesn't work on the ATs.

^ how much more quieter is it compared to the TXS race pipe? Is there a major difference like 50% or so?

Easily 50% quieter

40thanniversaryrx8 03-25-2012 11:04 PM

damn. Just checked the pricing for this thing and its looking like 650. thats quite a lot for a pipe haha. After reading through a few of the 119 pages, it sounds like this midpipe is actually relatively quiet or at least comparable to stock which i love. plus the whole thing with smelling bad doesnt seem to be an issue with most of you. For future purchase reference, could anyone confirm that it's not much louder than stock and also wont smell? the volume is my main concern. thanks!

dezau 03-25-2012 11:57 PM

contrary i had wanted a midpipe that would raise the volume a bit and yet not as loud as a straight pipe... guess i'm shit out of luck :(

ShellDude 03-26-2012 12:24 AM

um... i wouldn't call it quiet and definitely not as quiet as stock.

40thanniversaryrx8 03-26-2012 04:48 PM

comparable doesnt mean the same as. I got the impression that it was more quiet than most aftermarket midpipes.

RIWWP 04-13-2012 07:22 PM

Ray, FYI in case you haven't seen this: https://www.rx8club.com/series-i-aftermarket-performance-modifications-23/high-flow-cat-midpipe-231861/

I believe I was at about 55,000 miles when I installed the BHR midpipe, one of the first final production pipes you sold. I am currently at 97,500 or so, so about 42,000 completely trouble free, complaint free, and lovely miles on your pipe, everything from my cross country trek through the AZ heat and freezing temps on top of crater lake (in 1 week no less), to regular daily driving year round in salty/temperamental New England, and plenty of long distance driving up and down the east coast.

It's discolored from the age and mileage, but no rust, no weld failures, no change in the sound, no rasp, no drone.

This isn't coolaid that I'm drinking. If it couldn't hold up or stand up, I'd certainly be saying so. But it's simple truth that it's been perfect. It's (i'm guessing) the most mileage on one of your pipes out there, and you have every reason to be proud of what you created.

RIWWP 04-14-2012 01:17 PM

Ray, out of curiosity, what would be your take on using your resonator in an FD? I'm assuming it's basically the same principle, basically the same end result, just different pipe dimensions, but I haven't noticed it marketed that way, so asking in case there is a specific reason why it wouldn't be ideal. Google site searches on RX7club all seem to be the same guy's signature. No threads discussing it.

(I'm leaning toward an FD garage mate for my 8...)

:suspect: I do have the resonator on my Turbo II. With a BHR custom exhaust. And it sounds fantastic! :ylsuper:

BHR with Mazdaspeed exhaust

RIWWP 04-24-2012 06:02 AM

Cool. I thought about it more and realized the turbos quiet down the exhaust quite a bit, so might remove some of the 'market perception' if you will.

Look forward to hearing it. :)

Easy_E1 04-24-2012 11:21 AM

I had a fellow in a brand new BMW Z4 pull up to me at a stop sign and tell me that I had the best sounding exhaust he has ever heard.

I'll see about making one.... I have to tell you though, it has a sweet ass note to it.... and not over the top like you get with the silly TXS midpipe.... not even sure why they put a resonator on it... it's structure does NOTHING to tone it down.
