I have just started reading up about the BHR coil upgrade. A few questions...

1. Are the benefits a noticeable difference? (Ive heard people say it feels faster, but that doesnt always mean the car is faster.)
2. Cost?
3. Where do you order it from?


Also, do you think it will work well with an AP (hopefully next "big" upgrade on the car) and a K&N Typhoon intake (installed)?

Any info/comments will be great. Thanks.

i had the mazsport ignition coil upgrade and actually noticed a decrease in performance. so maybe a bigger spark isnt always the answer. someone posted a theory that the bigger coils the mazsport used took longer to recharge and it couldnt keep up with the engine. another person also said that if you used the AP to change the dwell settings they worked.

still, i have faith in BHR since charles teamed up with mazdamaniac for this upgrade and i've never known MM to be wrong. eventually this upgrade will be on my list of mods.

 

To me this is a reliability mod. The factory coils fail often and mine failed over time so I slowly lost power. Had I dynoed before and after there would have been a significant power difference. This will be my first mod after my suspension and cooling mods.

 

Ok, so stay away from Mazsport coil upgrades. I will probably end up purchasing both the BHR coils and the AP, but since the coils are about half the price, that might be the first one to make it on the car. Im not looking for any huge horsepower gains from any of the parts I order. Its my daily driver (I have a 1973 Monte Carlo that is has about 500 horsepower, so its not a huge deal to make this car extremely fast. Im going for reliable horsepower with this car.) so it will be mainly bolt on's. Im thinking the intake that I have installed, AP and coils, clutch and flywheel, and probably a midpipe.

Thoughts on those mods?

 

Mazsport is out of business so BHR is the way to go and there is also another coil setup from japan but I cannot remember the name and it is very expensive.

Your mods list is okay for all motor.

I have them and they rock, best money I've spent on my car so far mod wise. Power increase? probably not so much. Drivability, running smoother, no more funky symptoms from previous pos oem coils? definitely, the yukon coils/bhr configuration works great and you can't beat it for the price, mine was under 500 bucks even with a full set of plugs.

The BHR Ignition Upgrade is not marketed as a performance upgrade although some owners have stated that they felt the car was pulling stronger than prior to the upgrade.

The cost of the upgrade is $375 and does include plug wires. I would suggest, however, ordering a new set of spark plugs as well since the RX8 chews through a set about every 30,000 miles.

Yes you are correct. There are two problems with the kit in question. First, the coils do not share the same dwell characteristics that the OEM RX8 coils do. They required a longer charge time. Many people noticed a difference in the low to mid range RPM's but there was significant ignition breakup in the upper RPM band where the rotary makes its power.

While you can make adjustments with the accessport, the ignition box Mazsport used has been prone to causing CEL's because it disrupts communication to the PCM. There has been some discussion regarding the coils used as well but I've not heard a for sure on that one.

Your lucky BHR is so well liked and he has such a great following of people who love to talk about his products or you would have been flamed..... bad. Even a "little" research would have found the answers to your questions. Hell, two threads that have every bit of info on these coils are in this very section, on this very page. It works very well with the Cobb Accessport. I've had them installed for about 8000 miles now. No problems at all.
As far as an intake ,, I would consider the AEM Cold Air Intake. The K&N is a short ram and does not get the cold air that the AEM does.
Your intake temps will be much higher with the K&N.

What about ngk plugs? 6700 and 6701. I heard they don't work. and no I don't want to search for hours through a million rabbit holes to find the answer.
