Thanks, I'll have a look at the HKS one.
The Apexi seems to have the middle inwards cone as well (like the Spectre), so should be ok :)

The air has to go around it before being straightened into the pipe. This is extra blockage and decreases the velocity of the air intake. With the two filters that I recommended, the air goes straight in and velocity will be greater than that of the apexi. EDIT: If you look at the RB intake filter, it's similar to the apexi one... I know that RB put alot of research into developing their intake systems. It's just common sense that air will flow in better if there's an opening at the front of the intake filter, maybe it was hard for RB to find a supplier for their filters? what is the diameter size that I should get if I buy the ones with adapter? I assume the diameter has to be the same as the stock intake diameter? or it doesn't matter?

I believe the 80mm adapter would fit the pipe.
Would the HKS fit in the stock box? :confused: I went with the Apexi due to its excellent filtering capability. It sounds better than a stock filter quicker response and got rid of the stumbling at idle. :D: |
The 3.5'' HKS won't fit... I just found that out now. Although, the R1 (knockoff HKS) would fit. It's 3.5 but has a smaller mushroom shape. Just replace the foam filter part with HKS stuff and you're set :)

HKS filters are the worst and Apexi are the best - hp and filtering, according to: http://www.mkiv.com/techarticles/filters_test/2/

Apexi filters are the god, everyone knows this, except John, even though I told him at least 50000000times...................
I have the HKS right now and I hate it, but I can't do jack because someone decided to cut my stock box and make an intake out of it and sold it to a guy........... and now I'm stuck with the HKS filter.............sigh, I'll figure out something |

That is part of the stock box, it has the half velocity horn on it, three screws and it comes out. Remove the velocity horn (because the Apexi has it built into the filter) smooth the notches that hold the stock velocity horn on.

Done and done... I had a brand new filter laying around that I got from Pepboys (I think) back in the day for one of my cars, that I never used.
The only problem I had was, the filter was a little long and I couldn't fit the bottom half of the stock air box. I think I'm going to hack up the top half of the air box, so I can still utilize the the MAF housing, and fab up a new housing for the filter that will fit through the bumper... just need to find some time. |
