Hey Guys,

Anyone got an AEM Long Arm Cold Intake for their 8?
Is there a big difference in engine sound?
Any noticeable performance boost?

Thought I'd ask the sensible questions before i dropped £300 on one!

Any intake will give off a little bit of sound, as far a perofrmance. Gains are minimal.

And as far as the performance gains... that is the same for any intake.

Just to add something for others to debate on the subject. I recently put a ScanGauge II in my 8 (Stock air box) and it has an option to display the temp of the intake air. It gets that from the IAT which part of the MAF sensor just ahead of the throttle Body. Yesterday with an outside temp of around 80 deg F the temp of the intake air never went more than 10 deg higher than the outside air temp. So does 5-10 deg. really make that much of a difference?

I have it.....and it sounds GREAT.....esp. at higher RPM's....loud enough for people to think you have an exhaust.

Sound great with exhaust, a bit better throttle response, better top gear acceleration, keeps intake temps down quite a bit, Feels like there's a difference in accel from 7-9k but could just be placebo from the amazing roar haha

I've had mine for about 2 years. Just today I had my 8 at the dealer to replace a couple sensors and when they went to wash the car, the water jet actually started to remove the sock thats over the filter (some of you, I'm sure, know what happened next). As I pulled out of the dealership and quickly accelerated, the water that collected inside the elbow of the pipe rushed up into the engine! Of course the CEL came on and I could tell that something was wrong with the engine.
I took it back and they pulled the CEL code that narrowed it down to the CAI. When we removed the MAF sensor, it was visible that water came in contact with it. I reached through the bumper and thats when I noticed that the sock was not fully around the filter and it was completely soaked. They are going to keep it over the weekend to let it dry out.
Now I've washed my car well over a few dozen times since the AEM intake was installed and I've even went through the automatic car wash without any problems. But learn from this and check your sock to ensure that it doesn't slip off!

lol this is why i didn't get a cold air intake. i do wonder though...i'm one of the unfortunate rx-8 owners that has developed that damned "whistling/squeeking" whenever i begin to press on my accelerator when in gear. i've looked throughout the forums and they say that this obnoxious noise is normal...and that it is most commonly seen with those with aftermarket intakes. here's where my question is: i have the RB intake w/ duct and i noticed that this whistling happened RIGHT AFTER taking my car to a car wash..is it possible that water was sprayed into my air duct by the car wash and is the cause of this whistling noise? i seem to find no other answer let alone solution to this problem anywhere (posts on this forum says its "normal"... and my dealership says its probably my aftermarket intake so they can't diagnose the problem). sorry about going really of topic but this thread made it seem like this could've maybe happened to me with my air duct?

I removed my VFAD and installed a K&N airfilter using the stock air box. I have the whisteling noise up to 4.5k rpm. I don't mind the noise at all.

I've noticed mine gets significantly higher when in stop and go traffic, especially if it is a hot day out. But you are correct - if you are moving most of the time the intake temps don't get much above ambient.

is it possible to install the aem bypass valve on the rx8's cai to prevent water coming up the intake pipe?

I've jumped in and bought one, but looking at the fitting instructions, I think I'll get someone else to install it!

One more question - I can see that on the existing air-box there are several wires attached to it, presumably for some kind of sensors.

What happens to these wires when you replace the air-box with the AEM intake?
Do they re-attach? If not, what implications does not having them connected create?
I don't want to break my engine!

My K&N Intake had the necessary ports and holes for all these wires to connect back to, from the stock airbox, dont think you should have a problem.

Most are not used, only the MAF and three tubes. Be sure to cap your vfad line or you could run into some idle problems.

Is this a big problem?
Can it happen just from driving? I don't use power-washers when cleaning my car, so would I be safe?

It would be very hard to get water sucked up in pipe unless you submurge it.

Depends on how deep the puddle is, 7 inches or less is fine.

Yes you can but you need an adapter I believe.
