AEM CAI error??
Anyone with AEM getting computer errors?? A guy that works for Mazda told me that the AEM CAI would give me errors in my new 09 R3, he said to wait for the Mazdaspeed one... Is he trying to sell or is this true?

+1 to what 05rex8 said.
AEM = MS, he might or might not know this so he's trying to sell you 'authentic' mazda stuff but you'll be fine with the AEM.
As for the 'computer errors', that's nonsense. (assuming you don't screw up the maf when installing it)

The only thing that will cause your 8 problems is damaging the MAF sensor which by the way is REALLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLY expensive and or if you completely submerge the dry flow filter. That mechanic either doesn't know anything about the AEM intake or he does know what hes doing and is trying to make a sale. Even if you were to get the mazdaspeed intake for the R3 i'm sure you wouldnt buy it from the stealership i mean dealership. I owned the SR Motorsports and the AEM never had a problem. Good luck

How did you reset your ECU? Why did you need to do that? Is that because of the MAF causing a check-engine-light? I have a 2009 Red R3, and I have been thinking about putting a cold air intake on it, but I am weary of voiding my warranty by not putting on the mazdaspeed cold air intake. I do know the AEM and the MS cold air intakes are 1 in the same for the most part. I did hear they should be coming out with it soon, and I saw a video of a Mazda R3 with mazdaspeed exhaust and CAI.

Also, do you have pictures of your car? I am just curious to see the mods you have done to your R3. I am in Texas as well.
Thanks.

As said by a Mazdaspeed mechanic in the stealership (I borrowed that from another forum member...hehehe sounds good), anyway, the AEM and the Mazdaspeed CAI are the same even by the same manufacturer, the difference is that the MS has a mesh in the conduct near the air flow sensor to make it so the sensor does not give out an error, which may or may not occur with the AEM... therefore the same ****! AEM has it available for the 2009 while MS comes out in 2010 spring.

The reason is that, AEM/MS intake has different air volume than Stock intake. This car has a self-learning computer (most car does these days), it builds fuel trim over time. and if you swap the intake, the volume will be different and the computer will be like "wtf?". I mean it will "re-adjust" itself overtime, but the fastest way is to "reset it" and let it "start all over"
2. MS/AEM came form the exact same place. in Japan they dont even offer it as an option, instead, they offer a Mazdaspeed "high flow" filter. Just like they dont offer the Dual Canister MS exhaust in Japan (US people has different taste than Japanese people)
I had MS on my 8 for a year or so. it sounds pretty good. but I went back to stock cuz I want it to be "quiet"

The wire mesh is there to straighten/smooth out the airflow to MAF(so it can get correct readings) and to engine (its just trying to avoid "pulse" which might effect idle quality)
Well there is a huge area around my neighborhood that gets flooded everytime it rains hard. I always try to avoid the area cuz the water will go above my exhaust hahaha

There are pending codes that are stored and do not illuminate a CEL until it fails a 2nd time.
But I'm willing to bet its going to be a misfire code and you'll need to replace the spark plugs and/or coils.

thanks for the info man my friend is a mechanic but hes a truck man , he doesnt know the rotarys im gonna do the plugs and coils , hope that works it seems that its the most frequent problem from what i have searched
