2009 RX-8 aftermarket exhausts
I have a 2009 Sport that I am going to solo race, weight and horsepower are what I am looking for in a exhaust system. My local clubs also have a 90db sounds limit at 75 feet. Only two cat-back systems are available for the 09 RX8 since the exhaust now exits under the rear bumper rather that thought the bumper.
- Racing Beat Racing Muffler (not their dual exhaust tip street system)
- The MagnaFlow system
The Racing Beat muffler only has one pipe and ends under the car sending the exhaust down to the ground rather than out the back of the car. So it does not interfere with the rear bumper.
I can only guess why the MagnaFlow system would fit. From looking at the online drawings I see the angle of the rear exhaust tips can be changed while they are fixed on other systems. This must allow the installer to have the tips exit under the rear bumper. A far as I can tell the MagnaFlow system has no weight or horsepower advantages.
I installed the Racing Beat muffler and it fits fine. Weighs 10 pounds less than the stock system and Racing Beat claims a 3.5 horsepower increase. But inside the car this system is LOUD. Since it sends the exhaust down to the pavement under the rear of the car the sound is bouncing back and hitting the under side of the car. This is not a street exhaust and Racing Beat does not sell it as such. I drive my car to events and I will have to wear ear plugs. I like the sound of a good exhaust but this is too loud. Outside of the car I measured 88db at 75 feet.
What's the answer? Mazdaspeed's latest catalog lists a dual muffler light weight exhaust system for a 2009 RX8. I had this system on my 2005 and it saves about 5 pounds of weight and gives maybe 2 horsepower (I am guessing based on dyno numbers) Mazdaspeed published no horsepower numbers. The sound is very livable and very nice for a street system. I did contact Mazdaspeed and they do not list a release date for this system. Any comments or additional information?

If you really want one of 04-08 cat back system. It will fit 09 with some minor mod, like bending the hangers.
